Both Google and Apple Maps went along with “Gulf of America,” unfortunately, so we’re going to have to see.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (3 children)

From what I understand, they've only changed that for the Americans.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 49 points 1 week ago (2 children)

In Australia, both Google and Apple Maps say 'Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)'

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 35 points 1 week ago

Same here in Canada. Really wondering if they'll do the same for Lake Ontario, I suspect that's going to go over very poorly.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 17 points 1 week ago

Same in the UK on google maps. Pathetic and spineless.

Here you go

"They only openly embrace fascism in one country." No, fuck us and fuck our capitulating corporations. Don't let them think that you'll let them do the same to you.

One thing to note, with Gulf of Mexico he actually had Republicans pass a bill to do the change.

This one is an executive order. An executive order is what the name implies. It is not a law, but an order for executive agencies to follow. So while employees of agencies like FBI or IRS are instructed to call the lake as lake America, as far as the rest of the country is concerned the lake is still the Lake Ontario.

It's clearly is a stunt to distract from the pedophilia and a failed war.

USA appropriating the name of the entire continent is so dumb.

Woah, haven't seen Jeff Tiedrich in a hot minute. I'm glad he's alright (I guess?), but I didn't miss his milquetoast liberal piss takes meow-anarchist

Under the authority of myself, I'm hereby issuing an executive order-

"Lake Erie", located on the border of the Canadian province of Ontario and the US states of Ohio Gozaimasu, De La Ruesynavia and New Jerk shall be effective immediately named 'Eerie Lake'

I am also renaming the township of 'Erie' to 'Eerie'

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

I doubt Maps.me is on board.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 20 points 1 week ago

It uses OpenStreetMap which is a community project; I do think the community has more sense than that though.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Gulf of America, Lake America, how long will it be until they rename the Rio Grande the "River America" and the Atlantic the "America Ocean"?

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Shh, don't give 'em any ideas.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (14 children)

He already said he's considering renaming the Atlantic or the Pacific into 'American Ocean'

I guess we'll find out if he's more mad about 'Chyna' or 'Yurop' soon. 'North American Treaty Organization'...

At this rate he's gonna rename the continent

Still producing noisy distraction from EPSTEIN FILES.
Sad old man. One day a lot of people will smile when he goes away.

Google Maps obeyed Pedo Daddy instantly when it came to Gulf of Mexico.

They should rename every lake to "Lake America". And replace hard words Trump struggles with to Trump.

Like positive. Or negative. Or vaccination.

Just go to therapy, my guy. Arbitrarily naming bodies of water that nobody outside your country will use will not fill the hole in you.

Is Google maps a thing? Have they changed the name?

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They did when he declared the Gulf of Mexico had a new name, so did others. Nearly immediately.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yup. I just checked MapQuest though, and they did not.

Only if you were looking at the map from a US IP address iirc. It's still gulf of Mexico for the rest of the world, but with the stupid name in brackets now after it.

I stopped using Google Maps the second this happened. Fuck that cowtow bullshit.

If you want to know who still has integrity left, just open up their maps/navigation app and see what they call the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

Countries ought to rename their most toxic places after Trump.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

At this point I'm just excited to see what stupid thing he comes up with next. "From now on, we will not call them North America and South America. We will call them Free America and Not America".

[–] o0evillusion0o@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

Who cares what this senile child-fucker calls anything?

I just know he's the main character in the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES (TM)

[–] glibg10b@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder how OSM would treat something like this

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 26 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Wonder not:

https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/lake-ontario-lake-america/146975

Basically, OSM is a database containing points, paths, and polygons.

Each item can have any number of fields. Obvious ones like lat and lon, and specific ones like speed limit or entry fee.

An item can have many names, and its up to the renderer to choose which to show a user, or whether to show any.

The locale specific name for the US will change whenever the US govt department adopts the new name.

The general, most commonly used name will be lake Ontario until the most common make for the lake is lake America, which is unlikely to be ever.

The province 'Ontario' was named after the lake, so ....

The funniest part about calling Lake Ontario “Lake America” is that Canada didn't even name the damn thing.

The name Ontario comes from an Indigenous/Iroquoian name that predates both the United States and Canada by centuries. In fact, the province of Ontario was named after the lake, not the other way around.

So we're essentially renaming an Indigenous-named international lake because we're mad at Canada, despite Canada having nothing to do with its original name.

That's some truly impressive historical illiteracy. “Lake America” sounds less like a geographical renaming and more like a toddler putting their name on someone else's toy because they're pissed off at them.

OpenStreetMap contributors included it as:

official_name:en-US Lake America

https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/1206310

Wikidata editors also included it:

Honestly, I'm just impressed he didn't try slapping his name on it.
