Yes, Lysol was a feminine hygene product originally.

And killed multiple women from septic shock down there.

It was pulled and reintroduced as a an all purpose cleaner.

what mystifies me is why they never rebranded. didn't want to waste those advertising dollars they already spent?

Lysol: so effective at deals with messes it killed your Mrs?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

All purpose, except for one.

Wikipedia has few paragraphs about this.

Advertisements did note that Lysol was safe to use including on "delicate female tissues".[8] By 1911, 193 Lysol poisonings were recorded along with five deaths from "uterine irrigation".[9]

Uterine?? 💀

In my case it was a cbc radio documentary about the history of some common products and "feminine hygiene" that stuck with me.

“My smoking doctor told me to spray my pussy with Lysol or my husband would leave me for a younger woman and it would be my fault for having a stinky pussy.”

How did a brand name survive for 100 years after this??

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 17 points 5 days ago

Because it wasn't shocking to anyone 100 years ago and they adapted to the times?

Not spray. Irrigate. Flood. A vagina isn't a bowling shoe.

And it's because it was men advertising to women about feminine hygiene when they didn't understand how women's bodies even worked.

Ironically, at a lower dose, Lysol as a douche was actually an effective method of birth control because it messed up the body's biome so much. But, on a long enough time line, sure enough, it'll kill people, too, through chemical burns and inflammation.

Based on what I understand about feminine hygiene, probably by wrecking the biome of anyone's vagina that used it such that they were dependent on Lysol to prevent whatever else moved in from taking over after the Lysol killed the good along with the bad the first time, along with manipulative marketing to trick other women and girls into thinking they need to use it so they use it that one time to build the dependence.

The real question is how in the hell did they pivot from douche to "all-purpose kitchen and bath cleaner."

[–] modus@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Because it killed all the kitchen & bath cleaners.

[–] cdf12345@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

it worked so good on the pussay it was logical that the housewives would try it other stinky places. /sarcasm

[–] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 28 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I only douche with the best oven cleaner

[–] cdf12345@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

[–] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 13 points 5 days ago

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Name brand Lysol is a rip off.

Go to dollar tree and just pick up some LA's Totally Awesome Antiseptic douches.
