Having come from Morrowind, I didn't realize Oblivion had a fast travel system until WAY later in the game. I felt totally dumb for having missed that somehow.
On the plus side, my athletics level became alarmingly high.
I'm playing Baldur's Gate 3 at the moment. I was 30 hours in before I realised I could fast travel directly from the map screen instead of walking back to a sigil. In my defence the previous game I played worked that way, and I'm playing on a TV which is fairly far away so the text is hard to read.
Games like these are better without fast travel anyway
Seconded. Oblivion even added horses to make terrestrial exploration faster, why not use them?
But an edge that Morrowind has over Oblivion (and Skyrim) is that it has so many more small settlements dotted around the map that act as travel nodes. Skyrim at least added cart travel between cities, but we're talking less than 10 travel nodes compared to over twice that many in Morrowind (not even counting the Propylon network).

So.... You didn't read your journal? The quest that sends you to Weynon Priory as you exit the tutorial literally tells you to open the map and click on the icon there to fast travel.
The streamer Hello it's Kolo played through most of Skyrim without knowing about the run button. She has a very very strict no-backseating policy.
I have a bit of a reputation among my friends for missing pretty basic stuff in games. My best guess is that I replay a lot of older games that I already know everything about, so it's kind of a reflex to just ignore text that pops up on the screen. This is how I end up several hours into a game being unaware that there is a block mechanic.
Morrowind has fast travel (sortof). It's called "Recall".
Also stilt striders, boats, and the teleporters at every Mage's Guild. But I love Mark and Recall more. Newest game I've played that lets you set your own teleportation spots is Dragon's Dogma 2, with the port crystals you can find and place wherever you want. I prefer that than static ones, honestly. And it's cool that they are physically objects in the world you set down, but I'm also just fine with simple mark and recall through a menu as long as it lets me set my own point temporarily or permanently.
