If Getsy wants to sell screens so much, maybe he should quit the Bears and go work for Feldco.
Chicago Bears
Fields is not the guy. Eberflus should be kept as our DC, defense has improved since he took over. We need a real HC and OC.
Draft MHJ at #1. Trade down the other pick for a high/mid 1st a 2nd and some other late picks. Draft Latu/Verse/Chop or Cooper DeJean (a CB that should be our safety to replace Jackson) with the other first.
Use the 2nd rounder to go IOL (C) or get one in free agency if no good evals or none left. If not IOL, draft EDGE or safety, whatever we didn’t get in the 1st round.
Justin Fields gets off to terrible on season
Fans: I just want Justin to show progress
Justin shows great progress with his 2 best weeks of football and QBS of 125 and 138, until breaking his thumb midway through Minnesota game
Fans: Forget the past 2 weeks of progress, lets extrapolate his 1/2 game of mediocre football before getting hurt to the rest of his fucking career.
Justin Fields is injured for several games, his come-back game against the Lions is very efficient with a QBR of 109, and has a ridiculous superstar-like 178 running yards, but late fumble and T/O kills potential gamewinning drive
Fans: I know we just said all we wanted was progress, but lets just forget all the good things he did against Detroit and focus only on the mistake he made in the clutch. We need to see him put together a game winning drive for one.
Justin Fields goes out and puts together a clutch, gamewinning drive.
Fans: Yeah forget the clutch drive, lets focus on how he almost wasnt clutch before he was clutch.
In his last 4 games, Justin Fields has a higher passer rating than -- Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott and Patrick Hamomes just to name a few.
Passer rating is an obsolete stat that no one cares about anymore.
Fields is 21st in ANY/A. He's not terrible like Zach Wilson, but he's also a tier below league average guys like Carr and Mayfield.
His PFF grade for passing last week was like 50.
I don't understand why so many of you have such low standards. I think Justin is a great dude and it hurts that he's just not a good QB - but that's the truth. There's a decent case to be made that he's not even as good as Trubisky.
I really did not believe r/nfl when they said people on this sub were still defending Fields, but wow, I guess I was wrong.
Justin Fields is one of the worst QBs I have ever seen. I need you guys to know this. Do not pass on a QB this draft. The reason Getsy calls 30 screens a game is because Fields cannot throw the ball more than 10 yards effectively.
I don't know how you watch a good QB like Stroud lead a terrible team to 6 wins in a season when it took Justin fields three seasons to win that many, and still swear he is a good QB.
Average redditor whose entire football knowledge comes from Madden
he does a too much, IMO. The last two fumbles were on him..but so was the game winning drive...but we wouldnt need a game-winning drive if he didnt fumble..
maybe one more WR would calm him down? A WR named Marvin Harrison?
Getting downvoted for stating facts is crazy
Does anyone else feel Stockholm syndrome from losing so much? This victory feels so hollow.
to think if we didnt do two mind blowing losses, we'd be a playoff contention team.
My amateur takes:
We should be 6-6 at the moment.
It's getting difficult to defend Fields with how often he fumbles, and especially at such bad times. It is a glaring problem for his play. Yesterday, luckily, it was more so because he was trying to extend plays rather than just not picking up a blitz. But it was still bad.
Putting together a winning drive after the fumbles made the QB situation far more confusing. He did what we've been begging him to do for almost two years, but it was after doing something we hate (twice). At least he didn't completely crumble and showed enough poise to still win the game. That was a nice pass down the middle, something we don't see him do much.
I need to see some analysis of his game before I make a personal grade. Right now, I grade Fields' play neutrally as he played well enough to win but had two terrible mistakes. I need to see if the short passes were truly all he had or if he was missing intermediate guys again. Glad to see only two sacks against a blitz-happy defense, and lots of completions. If he was making mostly correct reads, then I may keep the grade neutral. So, he's 1-0-1 for the 7 game prove-it stretch.
Defense looks good. Flus trying to save his job. Glad they finally realized that prevent defense prevents dick-all. But I still think Flus and Getsy need to go.
Winning games like this almost feels like a psyop by the McCaskeys to keep us happy while they continue to put out bad teams. But this team feels very close to being competitive in every game. The talent is there.
My god..
Is this..
Is this an actually well-informed take?
The offense was so frustrating that I didn't really appreciate enough what the defense did. Yes, I know, I know the Vikings didn't have QB1 or WR1 but I'll take what I saw as progress.
Maybe it's time to stop trying to be an NFL team of the future or even present and focus on what we used to do when we were good. Build a team around strong defense and a running game. We're terrible at drafting QBs so we should use those top two picks to build a team and not just obsess about the QB positions. I'm of the opinion that Fields sucks as a passer and would be shocked if he turned that around but wasting another 1st round pick on a QB is something the Bears should avoid.
Terrell Smith hits like a goddamn freight train. He’s already pretty large for a CB and he was obliterating dudes all night
I still don't know what Justin Fields is because we have left him hanging with literal ass OCs that can't gameplan so his mistakes are amplified.
With that said I'm ready to move on if we have the number 1 pick. A fresh start with Williams/Maye and a new OC won't be so bad. I'm not even calling for Eberflus' head anymore with how well the defense is playing.
Bright Side Tuesday: At least Fields hit the short passes and we are not lamenting his inability to hit layups
Fields executed the short game well. He executed the very unimpressive Tyson Bagent gameplan that is not sustainable long term. But he executed it against an elite defense. It’s kind of funny because a lot of people here didn’t think he could even do that.
I won’t cover the negatives because boy has that been covered
Best way to beat the blitz? Screens. Min doesn't blitz as much... don't give up on the screens. Ever. Getsy was out-coached. No big surprise.
There is no joy in this offense. Add Getsy to the list of: Loggains, Nagy, Schoop, Turner, Martz, Tice. I'm so fucking tired of this team's inability to change. They are so stagnate. Next year I turn 34, and its getting harder and harder to give a shit the more things stay the same
Our QB almost lost us the game. Then our QB won us the game.
Getsy tried hard to give this game away from the opening whistle. Flus finally has the defense playing well.
Right now my only knock against Fields is the 4th Quarter. Fumbles and INTs in the 4th are very clearly a personal issue that he needs to fix. He pulls the trigger enough that I don't care about the few times he doesn't. That'll fix itself with time and better playcalling. I don't care about the few sacks because they get offset by 30yd runs. I do care about the 4th Quarter turnovers though. I need to see him get better there. It's not a deal-breaker for me but I would definitely understand if it was for the team.
Now if we are getting a new QB, it has to be with a new staff. That's just a non-negotiable. Because this staff is asscheeks.
I love all the fire Getsy chants, but he is forced to call screens so Fields can get the ball and throw it without thinking.
I'm over Getsy, Fields and Flus, but it's not just one of them that is a problem. Our offense sucks and it's not gonna get any better with the 3 of them at the helm.
That's the first time I've ever seen JF1 win when the game was on the line. And I don't think it was his fault the Vikings were in the game, despite 4 takeaways.
I don't care about Eberflus, with some players now, this defense looks awesome. They did well against the run and put serious pressure on Dobbs, who is a hell of a QB if you ask me. He is what Fields could be if Gettsy ever took the training wheels off. Seriously, strong arm, elusive, great runner, big dude. I'm a big fan of Cousins but I think they could roll with Dobbs.
My official stance, Caleb Williams no matter what. I think there’s too much groupthink with him right now and I think he’s still gonna be a stud in the NFL. And I don’t give a shit that he cried after a game.
And before everyone says that a QB isn’t gonna change anything, I actually don’t think the Bears are as far away anymore. We all of a sudden have a bunch of guys that I like on defense. Would I like MHJ on this team? Of course. But I think if you get good play out of a rookie QB next year, we can easily be what Houston is right now.
There’s a good chance taking MHJ over Caleb makes us better in the short term, but you have a ceiling as long as Fields is the QB. With Fields, your absolute ceiling is being a team like the Lions, good but not great and never going to win anything of significance in the playoffs.
I’m someone who wants to win the Super Bowl, so I’m taking my chances with Caleb, even if the floor the first year or two is probably lower than it would be with Fields.
100%
Greetings fellow travelers. I have just returned from the future and I am here to tell you how this all plays out.
This Bears team manages to squeeze out a couple of more wins behind and vastly improved defense. Eberflus is retained as the head coach but Luke Getsy is let go at the end of the season and is replaced by a guy that Flus met once while shopping for a new pair of khaki pants at Old Navy.
The team trades Justin Fields to the Atlanta Falcons for a third round pick and goes on to draft Caleb Williams with the first overall pick.
JF immediately improves to the point where Bears fans keep screaming “where was this Fields when we had him?” The Falcons become consistent playoff contenders and make the playoffs 6 times but only going as far as the NFC Championship game. Fields eventually retires as too many injuries slow him down.
Meanwhile in Chicago it’s the same thing as always. CW struggles. He has the same sorts of ups and downs except that he’s an emotional basket case and is driven out by the fans and media after he is caught on video saying that In and Out is better than Portillos.
We all go on to die before ever getting the chance to see this team good again.
The falcons won't get anything out of fields with Arthur still as the HC I bet.
But you're 100% right lmao
Is Getsy fired yet?
Just MY offseason coaching changes, I am not a Ben Johnson stan:
HC: Harbaugh (need a proven leader to change the perception of the team)
OC: Kevin Patullo
DC: Steve Wilks
QB: Scott Tolzien
RB: Deuce Staley
WR: Ben McDaniels
OL: Olin Kreutz
Was this the Bizarro Lions game or what? Particularly with Fields.
Lions: Fields looks great up until the last possession when he fumbles instead of pulling something clutch out of his ass. Before then, the team and coaches let him down.
Vikings: Fields looked mediocre and had some drop backs where he held onto the ball for a year down the stretch. The team (defense) came through for him almost more than any QB deserves after he fumbles away opportunities to ice the game. But then on the last drive he IS clutch and puts us in a position to win the game.
We were grading Fields performances the last 7 games. Despite the loss, I would put the Lions game into the good column and despite the win I’d put the Vikings game into the bad column.
I'm happy you guys won but damn that was disgusting football on both sides. So many screens and turnovers
best bit: going for it on 4th and 10 and converting it
worst bit: purple head wrap in the post game presser
What's the NFL record for wide receiver screen? Surely we at least tied it last night?
This was a crash course in, "How to kick the other team's ass on defense and yet still almost lose the game due to never throwing the ball downfield? I mean, could we be any more predictable? How we ever find out if Fields is the guy until we turn him loose?
I think I'm done with Justin Fields
I don't doubt he can bounce back, but I'm just so sick of the inconsistencies. Because when he looks bad, he looks really bad. I would rather he be getting the ball out quickly and throwing a few picks, at least that's a little fluky
Regardless, they need to fire everybody
I asked AI what the Bears need to do to improve this offseason and this is what it told me:
Based on the stats, the Chicago Bears need to improve their offensive production, particularly in the passing game. In the 2020 season, the Bears ranked 22nd in total offense and 22nd in passing offense. Their average yards per game was 331.4, which is below the league average.
One area that requires attention is the quarterback position. The Bears' passing attack was inconsistent, as evidenced by their 23rd ranking in passing touchdowns. The team needs a quarterback who can consistently make accurate throws and effectively lead the offense. This could be addressed through acquiring a new quarterback in the offseason, either through free agency or the draft, or exploring potential trades.
Furthermore, the Bears should focus on enhancing their wide receiver corps. The team lacked a true number one receiver, with no player surpassing 700 receiving yards in the 2020 season. Improving the receiving options will provide the quarterback with reliable targets and help stretch the field, opening up opportunities for big plays.
The offensive line should also be a priority. In terms of pass protection, the Bears allowed 36 sacks in 2020, which ranked 18th in the league. Better protection for the quarterback will allow them to make better decisions and minimize turnovers.
Overall, the Bears need to invest in their offense during the offseason. A combination of upgrading the quarterback position, acquiring talented wide receivers, and improving the offensive line will help elevate the team's offensive production and improve upon their 2020 offensive stats.
