Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Death to America

This isn't ideology, I think, so much as Zoomers just being practical. Like, they've seen what happened to the millennials who signed up to fight in Iraq. Every last one of them was extremely fucked up by the experience, and then they came home to a VA that is completely fucking worthless. Very high rates of suicide and domestic problems. Then there's all the problems with black mold and cockroaches you see at the barracks and stuff, shit like National Guard soldiers activated during the January 6 incident getting food poisoning while guarding the people who make the laws.

Like, who the fuck would look at that and think "sign me up"?

[–] Mokey@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago

I think the number is likely a result of unsustainable military bloat also capitalist contradiction of not having enough people who are educated and healthy to fund your war machine

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago

Black mold futures.

[–] Ho_Chi_Chungus@hexbear.net 48 points 2 years ago (2 children)

with enough aggressive posting we can get that number to 80,000

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

100,000 and we get a medal

[–] Great_Leader_Is_Dead@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Isn't this mostly cuz young people are too out of shape these days? I don't think anti-imperialism posting is the main contributor here.

[–] SerLava@hexbear.net 28 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

That is a factor but also kids really do see through US propaganda much more often nowadays

[–] Great_Leader_Is_Dead@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I mean, I find it weird the teens think the US military is evil but also think NATO be invading evil Gommunist Chyna Vuvuzela cuz no iPhones red fascism

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If it helps just remember that they have deeply unexamined views. Also, as a former teenager, I can attest to it being a very stupid chapter of my life.

[–] sooper_dooper_roofer@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

teens are very stupid, but today's teens have even less reason to ever read things and examine things than we did bc their environment is 1000x more distracting

their gestation periods were also spent in a womb with 50% more plastic and various other things, which probably contributes

[–] Tachanka@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

also literacy is seriously on the decline and in addition to being "distracted" they're also more overworked and more underpaid by an even more ruthless economy. Even if their attention spans were perfect, I doubt someone is going to roll out of their 3rd job itching to read volume 1 of capital. They're going to go home, sweep up, do dishes, take a shower, and collapse in bed.

ehh I'm not sure that matters much for teens

I just did some research and found extremely conflicting data on teen labor force participation, but I think teenagers' behavior has very little to do with the job market directly, although some of their anxiety might be traceable to their parents being more stressed from said market.

The US military has repeatedly decreased recruitment standards in that regard (or so I've heard), so I don't think that's it.

[–] wahwahwah@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

Chud Zoomers think that the military is soy while the progressive ones think it’s evil.

[–] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 47 points 2 years ago (2 children)

have they tried hiring european mercenaries

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 29 points 2 years ago

No they aim for the poor and/or the citizenshipless.

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

okay but the tories probably would sell off their army by the regiment if Uncle Sam asked

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What army? The UK has 150 MBTs left, total.

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

they've got 40k infantry surely. first sell them to the commissioned officers, then the US. privatization go brrrr porky-happy

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 44 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The space force made its recruiting goals lmao

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 30 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Please correct me. I would be more willing to overlook someone's service to the imperial core if they were in the space force. It sounds so deeply unserious and an absolute drain of resources. When somebody goes "well I didn't harm anyone, all I did was repair dumb shit" but they're talking about satellites then I'm inclined to believe them. Some v*teran was talking to me about how their friend was the 420th recruit (or 69th) and had the certificate.

[–] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 52 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Nah fuck that, satellites are what provide ISR capacity for all the guided weapons and drones the US loves to use.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Ahhh, I see. Thank you comrades amerikkka

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 26 points 2 years ago

Nah fuck space Force twice as much

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Does Space Force even do that?

[–] Runcible@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

nobody (physically) repairs satellites

[–] LesbianLiberty@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Everybody forgets Hubble :(

[–] mar_k@hexbear.net 35 points 2 years ago (1 children)

And yet my fucking childhood best friend turned to the dark and signed up this year, all because he didn't have a path in life or some shit 😞

[–] Fishroot@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

The causes of the recruiting challenges "are complex and multifaceted," Vazirani said. They include:

A strong economy, which has resulted in many more options for young people.
A smaller eligible population. Generation Z, the generation born from 1997 to 2012, generally has a low trust in institutions. Generation Z has decreasingly followed traditional life and career paths. Young people have fewer family members who served, which decreases the propensity to serve.

Benefits of joining the military, he said, include:

Competitive pay and benefits. Career training. A meaningful and motivating mission.

Funny how the US satanic army manages to find the solution to why the recruitment turn out is low, but private companies still insist in giving pizza times

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 31 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The article doesn't mention that total annual recruitment is on the order of 200,000. So, 20% down, 80% to go.

[–] CptKrkIsClmbngThMntn@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

Ooh that's a pretty decent chunk actually

[–] SupFBI@hexbear.net 30 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Nobody wants to die for empire anymore!

SMDH! Won't anyone think of the yachts and empty condos!?

[–] WoofWoof91@hexbear.net 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

fill in the blank: the only good yankee soldier is a _ _ _ _ one

[–] Nationalgoatism@hexbear.net 25 points 2 years ago

Hey, not fair. The ones who leak secret documents or frag their officers or crash helicopters are good ones as well

Death to America

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago

They're going to try to make military service mandatory, aren't they?

[–] Owl@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago

What's wrong with you people, why are you cheering. The US Army didn't miss its recruitment goal by a single person, and you're applauding.

[–] bigboopballs@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago

may the number go up 📈 🙏

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It is not a uniquely American phenomenon by the way. Other NATO militaries are claiming to have recruiting problems.

One might hope that solve of it happens because young people today are better people than they used to be. But mostly it is about them having better options. They can get jobs where they don't have to get shot at, don't have to go away from their families, don't have to work irregular hours, don't have to be around fascists all the time and where the pay is better.

[–] LesbianLiberty@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

I can say that the job options don't look good tho, I don't know if other zoomers aren't joining for that reason

[–] GinAndJuche@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

What job options lol

[–] wahwahwah@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

The court probs got rid of affirmative action to try and force even more POC into the military. Glad to see it’s not working. Fuckers.
