Gonna say it again because it can't be said enough: the militant radicals were killed, captured or chased out of the country. Then the media did its thing and within a handful of years the only stories told about the militant radicals were 1) they were all really peaceful people who did letter writing campaigns and "love ins" and 2) they were hypocritical scumbag opportunists and didn't really support the things they said they were fighting for.
Can't think of anything that might've changed? Surveillance technology perhaps?
Peaceful activists got killed and the result was militants paragliding into occupied meatspace and killing the oppressor. And then everyone started complaining about how not cool that was and they should continue being peaceful instead.
