when i was in high school this communist boy was trying to pull me left (i was a democratic socialist) and he used my love of Oscar Wilde to do it. he sent me the soul of a man under socialism and I was enamored.
I think there is actually some virtue to be found in minimalism and an appreciation for what is "enough."
but I'm also an aescetic freak who got rid of his only wooden bowl so your mileage may vary
