Anarchism is a social movement that seeks liberation from oppressive systems of control including but not limited to the state, capitalism, racism, sexism, speciesism, and religion. Anarchists advocate a self-managed, classless, stateless society without borders, bosses, or rulers where everyone takes collective responsibility for the health and prosperity of themselves and the environment.

On this day in 1911, the Japanese government executed twelve anarchists, including radical journalists Kanno Sugako and Kōtoku Shūsui (shown), as part of a widespread crackdown on left-wing activism. Among those executed were Uchiyama Gudō, a Buddhist priest and socialist who spoke out against the Meiji government for its imperialism and advocated for conscripted soldiers to desert en masse.

The pretext for this crackdown was the "High Treason Incident", a plot to assassinate the Emperor of Japan. The incident began when police searched the room of Miyashita Takichi, a young lumbermill employee, and found materials which could be used to construct bombs, concluding that there was a broader conspiracy to harm the imperial family.

On the basis of this plot, the Japanese government rounded up leftist activists from all over the country. 24 of the 26 defendants actually brought to trial were sentenced to death, despite the evidence against nearly all of them being circumstantial.

Among those executed anarcha-feminist journalist Kanno Sugako (some sources say she was executed on January 25th). At the age of 29, Kanno became the first woman with the status of political prisoner to be executed in the history of modern Japan.

Prior to his execution, Kōtoku Shūsui etched this message on the wall of his cell: "How has it come about that I have committed this grave crime? Today my trial is hidden from outside observers and I have even less liberty than previously to speak about these events. Perhaps in 100 years someone will speak out about them on my behalf."

I finally reached the point at my job where I just want to walk off mid-shift or stop showing up one day. Been with this place for almost 3 years, but there's quite the inverse relationship between loyalty and rewards. Also depressed and unhappy with life and of course angry at the world, still protesting and organizing despite how much I want to pick up a drinking habit or walk off a short pier as of late.

Lately I've been falling asleep on a blanket on the kitchen floor, because it's at one end of the apartment so it's like a little counter castle with only one entrance. Late at night I typically just lay down the blanket to have a nice place away from a big screen to write down thoughts, listen to podcasts or watch game dungeon on my phone, but it's so cozy, even on the barely-cushioned hardwood, that I can't help drifting off. Of course, actually staying asleep is a different matter, and I rarely manage to go a full night down there. But on the plus side, the experience sets my expectations so low that I can then move to my shitty dilapidated futon and it feels like the clouds of the cosmos, to say nothing of an actual bed.

As far as amazing places to make a little nest and be sleepy but hard places to stay asleep, I would put "kitchen floor" just under "bathroom floor while partner is taking a shower", because nothing beats the spine tingles of warm steam and water sounds.

Is there a word for that situation when some probably well-meaning but woefully uneducated lib is ranting about something and coming up with a bunch of solutions to problems that Marx & co. already figured out like two hundred years ago? Then you try to tell them that "yeah if only there was some german santa-looking philosopher who had written something about that hmmm" and they just won't have it while all you can do is Jim-face at the camera. There should be a word for that.

I saw an Instagram comment this morning with 20,000+ likes about how "Totinos" pizza rolls used to be "Tostinos" and how this is a conspiracy by "them" to "change our reality right in front of our eyes to see how much they can get away with" so anyways I'm not feeling too great about the future of humanity

@GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net Wrist twisters:

Picard on a diplomatic mission mistakenly bets the Enterprise in an arm wrestling competition. After barely winning the first round despite his ethical protestations he agrees to let Data take his place wearing a rubber mask. A full 10 minutes of the episode is an acting lesson for Data that Picard starts but then is taken over by the rest of the bridge crew. Picard says "I don't really do that" as they all point out his mannerisms and make fun of him. The rest of the arm wrestling competition is actually acted by Brent Spiner in a latex mask doing his best (poor) Picard impersonation. At the end the Alien who taught them the rules of alien arm wrestling asks why Picard made his stand in wear the disguise revealing that no one was fooled and it wasn't against the rules to use a stand in and almost everyone does.

Someone tell me if it's really hard to learn enough about how to code to make a game

And before you tell me "start small, feature creep, realistic goals," etc, DON'T. This game WILL be a rhythm-based, turn-based RPG with air combos and a style meter, it WILL have a sprawling story with 2 protagonists involved in the recognition, subversion, and ultimate dissolution of a slave empire, and despite not taking place on earth, it will end with the repulsion and subsequent embarrassment of the US military. There is no negotiating on any part of this

(CW: Racism on my part) Eh, I'm beginning to realise I may have learned and retained some really racist views. Reading this historical note about pre-WW2 Japan I'm realizing the Japanese didn't have a slave/peasant mindset that didn't even consider revolutionary thought. I was still thinking the Japanese had a subservient peasant farmer thought process. I've learned and retained a lot of trash views.

I don't get the argument for thinking the Houthi's aren't genuine that their actions are in support of Palestine. Like what is the explanation? They enjoy doing mischief and getting bombed?

actual incoherent rant post idk why i wrote thisCISC? RISC? How about NISC? Abolish coherent instruction sets entirely and let compilers control processor functional units and datapaths directly

Oh? That would increase compiler complexity? Have you seen GCC or LLVM lately? BILLIONS MUST -MTUNE

Complexity would probably go down if we stopped keeping up the illusion that all processors implementing a certain instruction set are actually the same processor (not even getting into x86 and how an Intel chip from 2024 can pretend to be a chip from the 70s still)

What about compatibility? If you're an operating system developer, stop writing unportable code and just maintain and update code that has to be unportable (niche machine-specific stuff). Someone somewhere was expending the effort to keep that code running whether it's you or some Intel engineer. It's not like there are no resources available for this, capitalists (who employ people to write software) just don't want to pay. Idk let's make the state pay for this and we can all benefit from better, less-constrained computer architecture. And if you're anyone else, just share your code with the people who have to run it so they recompile/reinterpret/whatever the code for their machine. Obviously, this will not work in a market-based society but whatever. We need a revolution anyway. Or not even that, JIT compilers work great these days.

We don't even have to get rid of all traditional ISCs, they can still be useful. But look at what we have to do to keep this illusion of sequentially executing, unchanging, yet high-performance and always getting faster, processors going. All manner of complicated speculative execution, out-of-order execution, branch prediction, whatever tf else techniques implemented in hardware (or microcode) when we could just stop pretending and move all of it into compilers (which can always be patched when these performance techniques cause total breakdown of security guarantees, for example). Spectre/Meltdown melted my brain and I have never recovered.

I'm pressing post before I talk myself out of posting this

Update: so layoffs were company wide and my team lost 2 people. Now I'm listening to my manager scramble to figure out what those people did and how we can shift around their work. Serves them right.

In the call to ease our nerves, we were told that it has to be done to make the numbers match and that's private business. I'm surprised they said the quiet part out loud but they will not be getting any extra work out of me as a result of this.
