We always hear about song lyrics that we deeply connect to on a personal level, but what about ones that are the opposite of your experiences and/or vibe? I'll start first:

"I got money in the bank."

"🎢I'm proud to be an American🎢" from the self-titled song.

Don't get me wrong - I really want that song to be relatable again, but right now and for many years it hasn't been.

[–] HonkTonkWoman@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

We had to sing that song in 4th grade, when the US invaded Iraq. Every. Damn. Morning.

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 10 points 1 year ago

Oof. If it's any consolation, I'm cringing with you across time and space.

I was in high school and then college during that era, so I guess I was lucky to avoid the forced patriotism.

"Where at least I know I am free I stand up, next to you.."

That song is so goofy that me and my friends (we are third worlders) put it up ironically while playing minecraft and sing along with an american accent and the lyrics are ingrained to my brain for that reason, lmao.

I’m on a boat

I’m actually not on a boat :(

Seriously, who likes getting caught in the rain?

[–] fossphi@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you don't have electronics or papers to worry about, it's genuinely very good fun. I love it!

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

For me, getting caught in a rain usually happens while I'm on a bike ride, leaving me cold and soaked.

"I'm happy" - Pharrell Williams

[–] Jajcus@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

..and not even 'because I am never happy'. It is the melody that is nothing like happy and hearing it makes me unhappy.

Taxman by The Beatles. I’m not criticizing their music as a whole, but a song written by millionaires unironically whining about having to pay taxes is totally unrelatable to most of their fans.

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Oh shut up.

[–] Tathas@programming.dev 8 points 1 year ago

Man, 5%? That's it?

The Boomerism was already beginning. Hippie on the outside Reagan Revolution on the inside lol

[–] muse@kbin.social 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Literally all of Ke$ha's Tik Tok. I have never woken up feeling like p diddy, nor have i brushed my teeth with a bottle of jack daniels, and I sure as shit don't exclusively date guys that look like Mick Jagger

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Wake up in the morning and I just can't see

Why everybody in the world is rich and famous but me

I mean, I’m young and I’m hot, and I want to make money

But when it comes to talents, I just don’t have any

"Regrets, I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention."

"In the desert you can remember your name, 'cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain"

Desert has many people for to give you pain.

"Sex by the fire at night"
-That's what i like, Bruno Mars

Other than being single, uhh i'm in a tropical country and there's no fireplace. But yes mostly being single.

[–] Nemo@midwest.social 12 points 1 year ago

"I dont know why I love you, I just do." -Jaymay

That's fucking terrifying, but my wife thinks it's romantic.

Bastard son of Odin
Born to kick your ass

My father was both married and not a Norse god upon my birth. I'm pretty sure I wasn't even divinely fated to kick ass. I just don't know what to do with this song.

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Every little thing is gonna be alright.

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

I grew up listening to a lot of old-school country music. Listening to it as an adult with an understanding of mental illness is horrifying and hilarious.

[–] OddFed@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"I couldn't care less."

Leslie. You made a fucking song about it Leslie.

The lyric "I'm not angry/ I'm just saying" struck me the same way. It's weird to be nonchalant in song form.

[–] SuperSpruce@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 year ago

Anything regarding blossoming love and romance. Most of the time, it's so far off from my experience that the lyrics just make me envious and overall depressed with myself. This is 60% of popular music.

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I've got all the right parts in all the right places.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Pretty much everything from Duran-duran.

Don't get me wrong, I love 'em, but have you actually listened to the lyrics on their songs?

"Smell like I sound"? What the fuck Simon?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

"God made me a cannibal to fix problems like you" - Angelspit

Been feeling more and more hungry for the 1% lately, in Minecraft

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

I just keep coming back to the whole playlist of songs I made the other day that are from the perspective of psychos, murderers, or rapists. Totally unrelatable; but are also cool songs. Like Polly by Nirvana, Possum Kingdom by The Toadies, and Still Alive by Johnathan Coltan.

[–] WhereGrapesMayRule@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

A slab of turkey-neck and it's hanging from a pigeon wing

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Consider yourself lucky. I definitely would not recommend being in that situation.

"It's Tuesday, my favorite day of the week

No obligations that affect me significantly"

-Tuesday, Psychostick

[–] Leg@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tuesday is canonically the worst day of the week. People who like Tuesdays are walking red flags.

[–] BiggestBulb@kbin.run 3 points 1 year ago

Tuesday - the day right after you started working again, and not the day you can slack on. Also, super far from Friday's reprieve

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I want your ugly. I want your disease. I want your everything as long as it's free
