ah yes, who could've expected this! using some corporate-owned platform to chat and then they do corporate shit! i was so surprised.

stop putting your communication in the hands of capitalists, for fuck's sake. stay with free protocols/implementations. this isnt complicated.

Ayy if that's the hill you wanna die on flame on. I don't have a strong preference, it's just where my friends are and no one is too motivated to migrate.

I'm still not entirely certain what exactly was wrong with their old system. Seems infinitely better than this steaming pile of garbage to me.

They thought that the Username#1111 system created unmemorable names that people weren't able to share with each other easily. They probably viewed this internally as a barrier to Discord's growth or some stupid shit.

That's literally it.

they're like a year into this aren't they?

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

Oh shit, I keep forgetting to do that.

just make your username end in four numbers.

honestly this change was really depressing. the way discord handled names before was perfect - make it what you want, change it whenever, who cares about duplicates - and they made it as bad as every other website for no discernable reason.

Also why the fuck would they do that, it was their best feature

honestly of all the dogshit changes they've ever made this isn't even in the top 10. having an extra friend code field to identify users just so you can have the illusion of reuasable handles is goofy, especially in addition to display names. good example of how users will always object to a design change just because it's different.

unshits you gaze upon at my take

but for real tho, i'm right. if i'm trying to tell someone to add me, i don't wanna have to open the app to check what my special party-assigned numbers are when i already have a username that i chose for the purpose of identifying me.

[–] SSJ2Marx@hexbear.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah yes, my favorite part of creating an account on any given website checks notes having my first ten username ideas already taken.

fuck that, the previous system was the perfect solution.

if you're that devoted to the idea of differentiating yourself with four random digits, there's nothing preventing you from stapling them to the end of your name

[–] bigboopballs@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

but for real tho, i'm right.

what a cringe thing to say
