According to this NYT article (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/13/nyregion/rikers-island-receiver-nyc.html), NYC is spending more than half a million dollars per inmate annually. Ex.: "there is roughly one uniformed officer for each inmate at Rikers, according to city data — an unlimited sick leave policy"

EDIT: oh shit! I just noticed that it says "daily" (!!). My bad, you're right.

Barnes v. Felix judgment was so fucked. I mean, yeah, if I throw myself onto a car, then I will most assuredly be in immediate danger. But consider that I... don't put myself in unnecessary danger...then shooting an unarmed man all of sudden seems like - dare I say - a bad thing to do. This is why cops with guns should not be allowed to do traffic stops, especially for unpaid toll fees, ffs.

The Trump administration plans to accept a luxury Boeing 747-8 plane as a donation from the Qatari royal family that will be upgraded to serve as Air Force One, in possibly the biggest foreign gift ever received by the U.S. government, four people with knowledge of the matter said. The plane will then be donated to President Trump’s presidential library when he leaves office, two senior officials said. Democratic lawmakers and good government groups expressed concern over the conflicts the proposal presents. The plan raises substantial ethical issues, given the immense value of the lavishly appointed plane and Mr. Trump’s intention to use it after he leaves office. Sold new, a commercial Boeing 747-8 costs in the range of $400 million.

A level of blatant corruption unseen in generations.

The essays documents the unraveling of a Tennessee family after a denied abortion for a life-threatening pregnancy, especially in a state with meager support for poor mothers.

Canadians, angered by U.S. tariffs and Trump administration talk of turning their country into a 51st state, really do appear to be boycotting the United States. Ticket sales for travel in summer, a crucial season for the industry, are down 21 percent compared with last year.

The decline in Canadian travelers, who make up roughly a quarter of all foreign visitors, is enough by itself to threaten tourism-oriented businesses in Florida, New York, Maine and other popular destinations.

Sometimes, however, the link between politics and personal travel decisions appears unmistakable. Since President Trump stepped up his hostility toward Canada, border crossings have plummeted.

Unlike air travel, land travel often isn’t planned months in advance, so changes reflect a change in sentiment more quickly. Crossings from Canada dropped sharply after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to “choose Canadian products and services rather than American ones” on Feb. 1.

Traffic at two of the busiest crossings, near Niagara Falls, fell 42 percent in March compared with 2024. And traffic at a busy crossing point between Vancouver and Seattle fell 48 percent.

The group has campaigned to end MAID, which it calls euthanasia. It also operates the We Need a Law campaign, which protects the rights of "pre-born children." "Canada is the only democracy in the world to have zero legal protection for pre-born children," its website states. The group has pushed for abortion to be criminalized and called for a ban on the abortion pill. It also opposes gender affirming care for transgender youth, as well as Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) policy in schools.

Rustad defended the group's presence at the legislature. "One of the issues that the group that came in was interested in talking about is SOGI, obviously something we're concerned about."

SOGI 123 is not a curriculum but provides guides and resources to help teachers address discrimination and bullying, create supportive and inclusive environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students, and acknowledge varying genders and sexual orientations. It was established in schools in 2016 by the then-ruling B.C. Liberals, as part of anti-bullying policies. Rustad was a cabinet minister in that government.

Rustad would not give his position on a woman's right to choose, but has repeatedly said his party would not reopen the abortion debate.

Mr. Amery told The Globe and Mail that he and Mr. Mraiche have been friends for "a very long time." He confirmed they are related and, when pressed for details, said he and Mr. Mraiche are "loosely related" through marriage. Mr. Amery is Alberta's top lawyer and his department is involved in defending the government in a civil case filed earlier this year, as well as overseeing the province's prosecution service, which would be involved if a criminal case arises from the RCMP investigation.

The agreement concludes months of fraught negotiations over whether the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with economic and military support for Ukraine as it tries to broker an end to its war with Russia. The economic agreement is intended to provide Ukraine with an implicit security arrangement while addressing President Trump’s concerns that the U.S. has provided Kyiv with a blank check.

The hell is an implicit security arrangement??

In an April 18 meeting, the Paramount board outlined acceptable financial terms for a potential settlement with the president, according to three people with knowledge of the internal discussions. The exact dollar amounts remain unclear, but the board's move clears a path for an out-of- court resolution.

Shari Redstone, the company's controlling shareholder, has said she favors settling the case. She is set to receive a major payday in a pending sale of Paramount to a Hollywood studio, Skydance, that requires sign-off from the Trump administration.

“In the weeks and months ahead, Albertans will have an opportunity to discuss our province’s future, assess various options for strengthening and protecting our province against future hostile acts from Ottawa, and to ultimately choose a path forward,” she said in a statement Tuesday.

“As Premier, I will facilitate and lead this discussion and process with the sincere hope of securing a prosperous future for our province within a united Canada that respects our province’s constitutional rights, facilitates rather than blocks the development and export of our abundant resources, and treats us as a valued and respected partner within Confederation.”

Ms. Smith’s new proposals also include reintroducing corporate and union donations to parties, constituency associations, prospective candidate associations, leadership contestants and third-party election advertisers, including those campaigning in referendums. It also eased spending limits, among other changes.

Both the provincial New Democratic Party and the UCP previously took steps to limit the amount of corporate and union money in the electoral system.

"The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together- as independent, sovereign nations for their mutual betterment," the statement said.

To that end, the leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future."

The White House, however, signalled that Mr. Trump's campaign to absorb Canada will continue.

In a statement issued Tuesday, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the Canadian election "does not affect President Trump's plan to make Canada America's cherished 51st state."

A few rows back from the empty stage, Amanda Mainville burst into tears, and instantly, every camera in the vicinity swung its lens toward her. She shouted an expletive as she wiped her eyes, bathed in the blue light bouncing off the walls and stage.

Fortunately for her, Jon Gurman and his daughter Raquel were standing nearby, ready the moment the mood turned. Mr. Gurman reached into his jacket and produced a plastic canister labelled “Anti-Liberal Wipes" ("Now with extra logic!" was emblazoned across it) and a metal can of “Anti- Liberal Rash Cream." ... The previous night, she had attended the big rally in Mr. Poilievre's riding of Carleton on the outskirts of Ottawa- where, as of this writing, he was behind and at risk of losing his seat to his Liberal challenger. She found it to be a transformative experience, much different from watching his videos online.

"He fills my soul. When I watch him on the lives, it's one crying, we were in tears," she said. "You feel from the soul of Pierre, just bringing that out to everybody."
