That sounds like a tinkerer's dream! Do you have any advice for keeping your assortment of tools organized?

I have a couple of "everything" boxes of screwdrivers, wrenches (allens, hexes, etc..) along with an assortment of nails, bits, and plastic pieces that could but used for something.

Not to mention the orphans to ADHD-lost parent devices that still have yet to be unearthed in other half-finished project boxes.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday,

tldr: For the multilingual among us, is it easier for you to "hear" a language, or are you better with reading/writing/speaking?

A week or so ago, I made a post regarding linguistics and enjoyed hearing how many of you enjoy the subject.

With autism, it is known that we tend to process oral instructions differently than neurotypicals. In my own experience, written instructions are crucial for my understanding of a task. It also helps to have a paper trail.

For me, most oral communication sounds a bit "underwater". It depends on the person's degree of articulation, the noise in the room my level of anxiety, and a slough of other factors. Some days there is no "noise", but on days when my brain just isn't processing correctly, it makes it difficult to want to ask the person "what"? 3 times, or even ask when I misunderstood the phrasing or intention behind their utterances.

Whenever I've searched "Can read and write a language, but not understand it", there are no results on the first search page. But rather, those who can understand a language and cannot write it. Movies are helpful when there are subtitles, as I can help build associations by "seeing" the symbols of the written language when it is spoken. When I did this as a teenager with Russian, I suddenly was able to understand people. As I could "think" in how they were producing the phonetics.

Certainly, the degree of familiarity with the language helps tremendously. When I lived in Germany, despite speaking the language most of my life, it was a different ballgame hearing people use it in real life, rather than in a quiet room with headphones on talking with people whom I am already acquainted. Don't get me started on how loud Lidl/Rewe were, and Swabian/Saxon dialects could influence my foreigner's conception of the language.

Spanish and Russian are similar for me, as I've used them for A LONG TIME, so I'd imagine the phonetics have crystallized in my head compared to languages I'm still getting used to.

Hindi, Telugu, and Bengali have been a bit difficult for my ear to adjust to. This underwater feeling resurfaces a lot. It's not unique to foreign languages though...

Sometimes I'll figure out that a song I've heard in department stores or just walking about is actually in ENGLISH! When it just sounded like a bunch of pots and pans bashing together or only the instrumental comes to mind.

Because of motor-mouth tendencies, I have found that I am able to speak, read, and write a language... But not quick to comprehend what another person is saying to me. This may be due to phrasing, difference in accent, or a straight up garbling of the sounds when they reach my ear. Maybe my brain just "demodulates" the signal wrong? Or perhaps I'm just a bad listener.

Looking forward to reading your comments.

Cheers,

-G

I’d be interested in making a design file for a chip capable of radiating an RF frequency… Isn’t a NIC a subtype of this device classification?

[–] gronjo45@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

That would be great, after introductions I think we should create a roadmap of some basic parts that we would need…

I’m not too savvy on what we can already use that currently exists in the RISC-V ecosystem. My vision for our group would be to stick to as close to open sourcing everything as humanely possible.

Because one of our goals is an OS, we should define the pieces we need to build. I.e window management, file system explorer, PnP drivers… I sent you a DM.

Hi Everyone,

tldr: Reviving the hardware group on Matrix with a focus on RISC-V and prototyping for fun.

Lately I’ve found myself wanting to study in a group setting, as it’s easier to absorb topics when there is a friendly cohort chugging along together.

The topics I want to cover are comprehensive involving hardware, design, and software.

So that the group benefits from others’ expertise/special interests…

If you are interested, send me a DM, or post in this forum what you would like to see/teach in a small group of 5-10 individuals.

The greater goal is to design a piece of computer hardware together. I am thinking we could work on a RISC-V Core and maybe a board just as a group hobby project.

Cheers,

-G

It is sitting in the refrigerator awaiting its transformation 😌

Is there a script that one could run to delete all of their YouTube comments? This is making me want to get off the wider web.

What’s a good beginner friendly yeast recipe? I love baking and sadly have neglected the Rolodex of yeast isolated in my cupboards…

Thankfully there are spheres like this one though. There’s a comfort in meeting other neurodivergent minds.

We can all bask in each other’s hyperfixations 😉

That’s a book I just tossed out the window.

I’d have better luck reading some enigmatic scroll by Donald Knuth or the battered remains of a Sumerian clay tablet before I understand neurotypical social nuance…

OpenWRT sounds interesting. Have seen the OSI model and studied it briefly. TCP/IP confuses me a bit other than it's a more abstracted way of how the phone company used to take cables and manually route phone calls through physical ports.

Will follow-up when I have something more constructive to add.

I didn't know what an MSP was until you wrote this comment. I'd imagine for the big-bloated million/billion dollar entities, it's preferable for them to outsource due to however their financial machinations are manifested.

From what I've heard, most products/services are a "spaghettified ball of garbled logic" for lack of a succinct descriptor. Appreciate your comment, I'm trying to become more aware of the service landscape and distance myself from a good majority of it. Any advice for us mortals trying to get into self-hosting?

I completely agree that TikTok is a garbage deliverer! Also disappointed that most businesses don’t take the route of looking into how to effectively show information to people on Google…

Will look at the Astro documentation, and for now, am just trying to become literate with HTML and CSS. I’m very Python and MATLAB dependent, as for me, the syntax is readable, unlike Rust. C is more familiar than other lower-level languages (I don’t know if assembly languages are the only languages referred to as LL… But Python is certainly more abstracted than C)

It took me awhile to get used to using only Vim, but I hated having to install a different IDE for every PL. Spyder isn’t a bad IDE in retrospect, but I didn’t know what the console was, how a debugger could be useful, or really even how to navigate a file tree embedded into the application.

When you grow up with too much computer abstraction, you fall into the trap that Microsoft wants people in the education who don’t have relatives with computer literacy to buy into. I get that I’m trading lots of convenience to use barebones tools, but it is AMAZING when I’m forced to use proprietary software, as the understanding that emerges in how the pieces fit together is enormous compared to hitting the equivalent of buttons on a PCB that have already been preprogrammed for you.

I have used inferences to help parse large HTML manuals, and the search functions like CTRL-F are quite useful in some documentation. But unfortunately, not every designer agrees on the amount of depth that should be put into an explanatory medium for their software brainchildren.

Thank you for your comment, I appreciate the community building. It’s very difficult to bring more people into the software sphere because of the elitism and snobbery of knee jerk reactions when people quite literally grew up with abstracted computing paradigms and are unable to break out of that thought because of the equivalent of burning books by controlling what search engines show their user base. The ability to rewrite text automatically with convincing garbage is very disappointing.

Happy Friday Everyone,

tldr: What times has the modern web frustrated you by forcing you to create an account or use a platform you don’t want to?

A food truck that I love, and learned by serendipity that it serves the public more than once a week… Has thrown me into a fit of rage. But not the truck itself.

Coming to Lemmy has been an overall benefit for my psyche and has helped me overcome some executive function issues I’ve dealt with throughout my life. I have enjoyed chatting with many of you, and am glad that corporate social media platforms are now all gone from my life.

Less algorithmic ensnarement, more thoughtful interactions with community members among other positives. I’m sure that many of us are also the Linux weirdo of our respective spheres of influence. It has also helped me encourage others to be more mindful of the technologies they use and has resulted in deeper friendships.

However, living in today’s world, it is impossible to go more than 2 feet or several links without being met with a Linktree, Facebook page, Instagram, or some larger company to gatekeep.

I’d imagine this food truck would not get nearly the publicity they do without utilizing the most common ways people interact with their pocket electronic boxes… But when I forgot the password to the Facebook account, the displayed automated message implied I was abusing the reset password feature and that I was blocked from doing so.

It made me wonder, what ever happened to people having their own websites?? I’m in the intermediate age where I didn't grow up with dial-up or less-abstracted computing systems, but remember how ubiquitous personal sites were.

This has made me want to get into spinning up my own website. I have acquired a domain name as well as a server for storage hosted by a provider. I do not want to start with anything complicated, nor do I intend to use a corporate service like Wordpress to host this site. However, because I am new to this, I don’t want to accidentally dox myself or do something idiotic with the server.

Since this is not a technology page, I would like this post to open up discussion about your own frustrations with local businesses being inaccessible without a larger big brother platform like Meta or Google gatekeeping the advertisement and accessibility of a service.

Thanks and stay cool and weird,

-G

Howdy Folks,

From talking with many neurodivergent people throughout life, and finding community among those who have a fascination with linguistics…

Are any of you deeply interested in the subject? If so, what first sparked your curiosity? What abilities did you hope to acquire?

To connect with a wider group of people? To read ancient languages, or perhaps to win your favorite scrabble competition in a tongue you can’t speak?

I’m curious, as it feels like language learners form a spectrum of their own. For me, it helps contextualize so many facets of life, and has widened my world of friends and literacy.

Plus, it’s fun to know what someone may be thinking in their native tongue when speaking your mother language.

Living in a foreign country whose language I spoke for 15+ years from childhood gave me a huge shock, when I realized psychology and phrasing play a larger role in communication than just a daisy chain of words.

Makes me wonder how peculiar my own accent(s) / phrasing sound to their respective natives. One of my favorites it when speaking Spanish, is to accidentally declare that you are pregnant instead of embarrassed… Makes the correction twice as effective! Or when a man in German expressing his love for Hummer cars is not actually professing passion for lobsters 🦞

For those of you whose native language isn’t English… Have you had any mismatched moments like this? What funny things have you heard English learners mismatch?

-G

Happy Friday and Saturday Morning,

From the variety of perspectives that people across age groups, cultures, and neurotypes possess… It’s gotten me thinking a lot more about how to conceptualize respect.

Being autistic, usually it is difficult for me to gauge what the other person is thinking and desires. Unfortunately, treating others the way you would want to be treated, may oftentimes not be the mode at which the person expects you to interact with them.

I believe this may be due to a difference in definition or “feeling” of how respect is supposed to be conveyed.

How can one be more respectful? Extending the question… How can we as autistic people better adapt our behavior to provide a better social experience for both ourselves and our conversation partner(s)?

Recent events have had me thinking a lot more about which tools we will be allowed to use in the workplace.

It was difficult to undo the damage that using Windows for most of my life affected my perception of computers.

Using Linux has widened my perspective on technology in general and made it a lot more fun to explore low level and systems programming.

Do many of you get to use Linux tools at work? How would you feel about more small establishments and local shops using software that gives them more control?

I’d imagine payment software, and a whole slough of other services are now sold as SaaSes when historically they did not need to be digitized or have an unnecessary middle man.

Just a little Tuesday thought for discussion. Hope you all are doing well.

-G

Hello All,

Hope you are all doing well despite the current circumstances of the world. Given that society is in a fair amount of turmoil, this is a great time to open up a discussion about the perception of others and how our autism shapes that view.

There have been times in my life where colleagues, friends, classmates/peers start off with an initally positive rapport that is unfortunately shredded at a later date. In the past, this has led to bullying in the workplace and strained interpersonal relationships. When there are other clearly neurodiverse individuals sharing the room with me, oftentimes crude comparisons are made to minimize both myself and the other person.

It's a bit confusing why this happens so often, but I'd imagine that when I get more comfortable, parts of the mask come off. Another guess would be that I may be socially blind to certain actions that may alter one's perception.

Wanted to see if any of you relate to this, as it would be a great discussion item to see how others feel. Wishing you all the best.

Hi Everyone,

I just completed a new PC build. Oddly enough, it was able to get to POST and boot. Linux Mint is installed on the drive, but there’s one problem…

The fans don’t work. Neither the ones that came with the case nor the ones that came with the CPU cooler.

Motherboard: MSI X670e Plus Gaming CPU Cooler: Noctua DH-15 CPU: Ryzen 5 7600X GPU: Radeon RX 7800 RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 (Will look up specific model at home, can’t remember atm)

I have tried updating the BIOS, which did not change anything. Double checked all the connections, none seem to be connected incorrectly…?

Tried setting all the fans to PCM instead of DC… Still nothing.

What should I try now? I don’t want to damage the system by running without cooling.

A howdy hello to everyone,

Getting older has made me realize the deficits in my cooking skills. I was a very picky eater growing up, and started to widen my palate so that I wouldn’t be condemned to eating some form of bread with cheese for my entire life. I love fruits and vegetables, so there’s no problem here. Grains are a bit difficult because of their texture.

I am completely dogshit at cooking. Whenever I try a new recipe, I either burn or undercook the food, resulting in about an hour wasted of poor planning.

This may involve walking back and forth around the kitchen getting ingredients as needed, forgetting to do a step, or forgetting an ingredient that is sitting on the counter away from me.

My motor skills are sometimes clumsy with cutting, so oftentimes the vegetables and fruit are cut too thick, or not to the point where the recipe expects them. When I made aloo gobi, my cauliflower was too large, the potatoes were undercooked, and the other veggies were just a pile of slop. Sometimes other dishes will not be entirely cooked and other parts will be burnt.

Oftentimes I might hate the taste of what I’ve made, so ultimately I will act to not eat anything because I don’t want to waste money cooking then going out. I have been working out and live a much more active lifestyle compared to how sedentary I was in university. Walking around 10 hours a day has made me truly realize the feeling of hunger. An emotion I normally never felt due to stomach problems and perpetual nausea.

I am very good at cooking breakfast foods, but do not want to eat French toast or Pancakes every single day. I’d like to add a broader spectrum to my breakfasts as well, as it is a quite small subset. I tried learning the cookiebookie latex package to write a cookbook as I went, but I gave up on trying to get it working. Formatting documents is an entirely different post.

This is turning into a rant, but for those of you whose special interests are cooking and who have found a spectrum of foods that are nutritious and filling, what advice would you have for me? What cookware do you recommend? Is there a set of recipes you think would be good to introduce cooking techniques? My end goal would be to cook with mostly anything I have on hand to turn it into something delicious and nutritious. Protein rich meals, vitamins, minerals, calories, etc.

Hello again everyone,

I’m very happy with the comments from the last post I made. Many of you had positive and constructive feedback about socializing. Made me realize that I’m generally overthinking the whole thing.

I mentioned that I was a chatterbox with a tendency to delve too deep into things and talk about whatever spontaneously comes to mind. Usually I can hold a conversation for the first couple of meetings, but then I’ll be at a loss of words for relatability.

When I thought more about why I can’t relate to others, it’s not because of any distaste towards people or their personal likes/dislikes… In fact, I would prefer to be viewed well in someone else’s perception. Generally treating others with kindness, complimenting specific items of clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, and inquiring about basic things like music, weather, architecture, outdoors etc.

But when I look into myself… I went through life having mostly no preferences

For example, when asked where I’d like to eat, I have been trying to expand my preferences. However, most of the time when I eat outside of my selective food items (mostly bread-based with some cheese), food can be difficult to chew and swallow. My music tastes are broad, but I don’t usually seek out new songs, and have difficulty discovering new songs.

Let’s continue this conversation about socialization, and extend it to preferences, likes, and dislikes. The problem with having an identity that doesn’t revolve around external activities outside of the usual hyper-specific autie hobbies, I’d like to become more relatable, learn to discover new likes and dislikes, and overall gain the ability to do this. I’d imagine it would make life quite a sum easier to change my perspective, but sometimes my mind is blank and unable to seek things out.

How do you get other people to speak with you? Usually I never know what to say in response.

Being a chatterbox hasn’t worked out too well throughout my life. Even in my second language, German, it’s evident im sort of a “parrot” when it comes to learned social phrases.

Socially exhausted right now and feeling like an alien.
