His obsession with the Nobel peace price is really what's driving all this. He's been willing to do deals nobody else would make just to get that recognition, and it's ironically inflaming more conflict.
It's like taxes, they probably already know, but they make you fill out the form so they can either catch you out if you forget one, or add it to the list if you give one they didn't know about.

There's also the thing where the US will turn on your country if you ever try to be more independent. NATO isn't just a defence agreement, it's a subsidy to the US defence industry. It's the only explanation for countries willingly signing up to the F-35 programme.
