In the course of my life I have happened to be friends with a few billionaires/members of billionaire families, and a number more in the 9-figure class. They are not substantially more shitty people than what you find at much lower net worths imo. Some are really well-intentioned. Also, some are just born into that wealth. Nonetheless, the inequality they are part of is destroying society. Also, sociopaths or even just selfish people empowered by that amount of wealth and surrounded by easily corrupted systems are very dangerous and harmful. So, I don't harbour hate for billionaires themselves just because they're billionaires, but the co-existence of such extreme wealth relative to the rest of humanity is a disaster that needs to be ended.
I don't know any billionaires but I've known some higher-multi-millionaires and most of them were not good people - and then if you look at their children, it gets much worse. My own brother-in-law laid me off because his wife didn't like me, I almost lost my house over it, meanwhile he's in the Caribbean every weekend. He looks like Trump Jr. now, the slicked hair and veneers and everything.
Ok but how do you go about making any political changes that fix the problem when the billionaires literally own the government? The only way to actually, effectively eliminate the problem is to…eliminate the people that are causing the problem.
I'm not going to claim to have all the answers, but I would say the corruption and influence of money in politics is the first thing to stop. Get rid of corruption and tolerance of money in politics, then policies to address inequality could have a chance. Fail to deal with corruption or money in politics and taking out the guillotines won't fix things. How to do that starting from where we are? I'm not sure. Maybe via an anti-Trump kind of character, riding a wave of populism into office but with a sincere drive towards a society of well-distributed benefit and a hated of corruption. 🤷♂️
Who got to decide that money influences politics? Eliminate those people to achieve your step one. You can’t just campaign against them, you can’t afford that.
Who got to decide? The corrupt politicians, also in a US context it would be the justices that voted in support of Citizens United, and the people behind the Citizens United organization. It's a weird question to ask though, as if somebody just decided political corruption would be a thing.
i think the entitled born into wealth, nepobabies would have the worst attitudes out of all of them. but on another note, i once followed some woman on youtube(asian, vietnamese) said she once dated a guy that was millionaire, but was shocked when he was such a cheapskate(one dint feel like he need to pay for a date, or got coupons out)
This is the way.
That’s fine, I will harbor enough hate for the both of us. When the time comes, sorry about your friends but it has to happen.
Certainly appreciate your level-headed response. Hate certainly need not be involved for one to recognize that billionaires are simultaneously capable of massively affecting public opinion, while also being completely detached for the real needs of the average human. Pretty clear that is a desperate problem in need of a solution.
Holy shit, how come there's so many sane people? or is it that lemmy is actually less radical than reddit?
ok nvm, I just read some comments below and wow...
We have a nice trail mix of users from centre to left on the political spectrum. Frequently at odds with each other, but I personally appreciate the variety.
reddit has a ton of russian propaganda, and other propaganda machines egging people on. aside from tankies and conservatives, i think most of us came to Lemmy because we were banned for calling out/reporting some obvious ragebait, trolling.
