I hate to say this, but my opinion is nobody here knows very much. It’s not necessarily that your avg. redditor doesn’t know the sport, there’s some great analysis in every thread. But 99% of our collective knowledge comes from watching a game play out. When it comes to personnel stuff though, who could even tell you why those coaches got fired earlier in the season? We have so little insider info. We have fun analyzing & critiquing, but at the end of the day it’s all guesswork.
I guess a personal example would be, a long time ago I had the chance to be in the locker room after a game and listen to Wannstedt’s post game team talk after a win. It was honestly one of the best, most motivational, and absolutely life changing speeches I’ve ever heard in my life from any source. It was flat out fucking incredible. But when you look at his record being below .500, and the way he was discussed in the media, he was vilified. He was called a “bad coach” so much it was actually considered a fact. But my God… that speech! It was absolutely fucking mindblowing how awesome it was. You never hear that Wannstedt was the greatest coach ever, or an actual true leader. He’s never mentioned in talks with any of the legends. All you hear is the crap! And holy shit. I would have ran onto the beaches of Normandy for that man after I heard it, and I was just a bystander. No lie.
So I guess my point is, nobody here actually knows the man. Nobody here actually knows what the right choice is, with actual experience and knowledge to back it up. Nobody’s opinion, although possibly correct, are truly informed. It’s something to keep in mind when you’re delving into the Reddit or sports journalism hive mind.
