I think there are 4 more winnable games (MN, ATL, AZ, and GB). Given that it's always been a rebuild project, I think we keep Poles, Flus, and Fields if we get 7 wins, especially if we look okay in the losses.

The team is on the way up, still playing hard, and I think 3 years is a more reasonable timeline.

Lions fan with an honest question:

If you guys do end up with the first pick in the draft with the Carolina pick, does Fields remain the starter?

My honest opinion? I don't care a lot either way. I would lean towards firing everyone, but if they don't I don't think it's a tragedy.

Very very very few coaches are actually good and a few are very bad but the vast majority are Just Guys whose fortunes rise and fall on QB play, luck and the shifting scheme meta.

I have some concerns about some of Poles' apparent philosophies, but he clearly wasn't building with years 1 and 2 in mind.

If you go to the 31 other NFL team subreddits, you'll find probably 25 of them copy-pasting all the same stuff we say about how their owner/gm/coach are the stupidest ever and nothing could ever change until they get rid of them.

Finally a thread where I don’t feel insane reading people’s comments. I disagree a little with your preference but I agree with your sentiment.

Getsy I feel is a gotta go no matter what, he’s made the same mistake two years in a row and there’s really no sign that he’s changing his philosophy.

Flus i really really don’t give a shit, he’s got the defense looking a little better since Allan Williams was fired and we expected this defense to be awful at the start of the year. I think it’s easy to hate a head coach when the team is losing but there’s nothing to really point to that’s fireable. Like you said a lot of coaches are jags.

I really like poles’ philosophy and think he’s staying no matter what. I like how he treats draft picks as liquid asset. Sure he didn’t make the right move on claypool but he’s gotten so much more back from other places. His OL is coming together very nicely. He has put there Bears in a very nice situation to abandon ship on him though lol.

I’m a Fields guy but I really don’t see him being the qb next year. I think he’s got a lot of the intangibles that he could still be successful despite the body of work he’s put up so far. Don’t get me wrong he’s got glaring weaknesses. I just feel he’s got as good of chance to clean those up and turn it around as any dude coming out of college has the chance to succeed. If you’ll let me be delusional if poles must draft a qb, I still don’t see any reason to ship Fields off unless there’s a haul of picks coming back. Just force him to be Taysom Hill if he wants play time and take a comp pick if he walks in 25

Someone said it in another thread. Good coaches don't lose 14 straight. Eberlose has to go.

[–] twedditor@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good Coaches win division games (more than one even!). Good coaches string (at least) two wins together.

I don’t think there is a scenario where poles gets fired regardless of how we do the rest of the season. I also think the likelihood of Flus going is also low. Fields and the rest of the staff I’m less sure on. If they keep fields I think Getsy is still here too since giving him a 3rd OC wouldn’t be good for anyone, but if fields ends up going I can see a new OC being brought in regardless of Flus’s status.

[–] The_Wata_Boy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think it depends on where we fall in the draft. If we fall at #3 and like #11 then my guess they take MHR and a Tackle or DT and we run it back. If Carolina sucks ass and we end up with a top 2 pick I'm guessing they will use it to draft another QB.

People overlook 1 thing: QB's are very expensive when they come off rookie contracts. Fields has an option for next year, but then he's due that 2nd contract. My guess is the Bears will draft a QB strictly because nobody knows if Fields is the guy and at best they only have 1 more year with him before he needs to be paid. By moving on to another rookie QB it allows Poles to spend money building a solid roster outside the QB position.

[–] juliuspepperwoodchi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

More than anything, I want the result of this season we need for Getsy to get the stanky boot. Anything less is a disappointment.

[–] tartan2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don't know why you would think it's realistic for us to win 4/4 winnable games to close the season when we've won, like, 3/7 winnable games to open the season

[–] Rshackleford22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Flus needs to go. He’s a clown who has had multiple coaching issues. Indictment on him

[–] ChuckieChaos@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

7-10 is what a lot of analysts pegged for their record this season. Going 4-3 in this stretch would end on a high note. In this scenario, Flus at least keeps his job at least. Also depends on how you get to those wins.

[–] parks381@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (5 children)

If they get to 7 wins there is probably no chance Bears fire Flus, but I won't feel great about running it back with him. Fields is still debatable. He'd have to be consistently good through the remaining games to pass on 2 great prospects.

[–] Bookofdrewsus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think if they go on this run, it proves that Flus didn’t totally lose guys and if they put forth a winning effort, Flus should get the credit. I kinda wanna see the Bears continue to disappoint because I’m done with this coaching staff.

Hard to say without context of performance and where the CAR pick ends up.

[–] lVlICHA3L@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So much young talent on this team and many key players have been hurt including Fields. We are missing two coaches also. It would only be fair to see the team as a whole.

[–] ImEvadingPermaban@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think Flus needs to get to 6 Wins. He won't.

[–] TLEH-IV@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Don't think the MN game is winnable. Semantics though. I don't think a bunch of empty wins at the end of a dog shit season mean anything. He lost 14 straight.

[–] Er0ck619@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The fact that we may end up with a top two pick from the Panthers changes everything. Fields is due to get paid and we could give him another year to prove it but his option would cost 23.5 million the year after. That’s essentially a fully guaranteed one year rental. There’s no guarantee we end up with a pick to draft a qb in 25 in case he doesn’t work out.

No matter what we need a new OC and HC, in my opinion there’s going to be nothing a few more wins on the back end of another awful season will do to change that.

However, here’s a potential scenario that I think would work and would allow Flus to stick around. If he was willing to transition to a full-time DC, I think he would be much more successful in that role. He just doesn’t have the requisite skill or experience as a HC to get it done, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Many coordinators are great in that role and then go on to suck as HCs, and since he’s taken over the defense full time there is no denying it has gotten much better since Williams was let go.

Now of course, it’s a long shot this would actually happen because most people would not want to essentially demote themselves to a lesser role voluntarily. But, I don’t see many other teams knocking on the door clamoring for him to be their new HC, so there’s a chance he could be talked into it given the right circumstances.

Getsy, on the other hand, has got to go. Even more so than Flus, because at least Flus is showing his side of the ball can be consistent week-to-week. Getsy has become glaringly blinded by his scheme and his personal approach to what good NFL offenses should look like. He is refusing to scheme to a player’s skill set, and instead expects everyone to bend to fit his scheme. And I’m not just referring to Fields here, during Bagent’s stretch I felt he was often putting him in some awful situations and expecting far too much out of him. He has consistently shown a troubling lack of ability to adapt/adjust in-game, and also struggles to embrace what works over what he wants to see from the offense.

Ultimately, all of this is gonna boil down to the McCa$$keys (as it far too often does). If they truly are going to keep their word and allow Warren and Poles to take the wheel, then I’ll have hope the right staff will be brought in. But if they insist on being involved once again and opt to bring in some former NFL “expertise”, then we’re boned. They also may insist in keeping everyone around next year, which is just as bad too.

Time will tell.

I have to be taking crazy pills. There's no way that any of you would seriously be okay with this coaching staff returning next year, right?

Regardless of what they do, Poles has kept a lot of things close to the vest. I am not sure what he is thinking

[–] Zealousideal-Tax-527@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

7 wins makes me think Fields had to show something good at least, as much as I think we need to draft QB if Fields can actually prove and show he can be a starting QB I could live with rolling him out next year. That being said coaching changes still need to be made and would mean we would have to take MHJ with the #1/2 pick depending on where the Panthers finish. We could trade back and still try to get MHJ but I’d rather not leave it up to chance, take him with the highest pick and do either OT or DE with our pick. I’d love to avoid a QB in the draft but realistically I don’t know if Poles will.

[–] inorite234@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I wouldn't put money on them winning 7 games.

The only sinkable game left is against the Cardinals. Other than that, the only games where they have a shot are: Falcons and Vikings. But the vikings are clearly a better team.

[–] lkn240@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

cardinals with Murray will be tough. I like our chances against ATL better since they are a running team, which plays to our defensive strength

Either way I want a new OC. Getsy is clueless.

[–] MichHitchSlap@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The same people yelling and screaming about Bagent only ever being a backup quality QB and that Caleb Williams sucks are the ones who are posting three times a day on CHIBears about…. what if Fields becomes a MVP QB over the next 7 games, do we keep him. Shit is exhausting dealing with you all! To answer the question for you all….

YES! If fields turns into an MVP candidate and leads the bears to wins and makes other around him better, YES, are you happy now? I don’t want to hear the excuses about the o line, defense, coaching, GM, ownership if Fields continues to struggle. It’s all on Fields now, put up or shut up!

[–] MrSpreadsheets@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Joshua Dobbs is saving Minnesotas season.

Kyler Murray just came back for the Cardinals.

Green Bay is Green Bay and we’re Chicago.

Atlanta maybe, but even then I find it doubtful.

We may get 1 more win this season

[–] Tedy_Duchamp@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Your hope will be extinguished pretty quick once Detroit hangs 40+ on us and JF1 still looks like shit

winnable games

GB

Bruh when will Bears fans learn

[–] FuckReddit000007@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If they retain flus another year I'm going to get a lot of work done on my house because I won't be wasting 3 hours every Sunday watching that dumbass make godawful coaching decisions.

[–] NP2312@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What self respecting human wants to watch three more years of this!!??

[–] Wearestartingacult@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I could see the bears being competitive in these games. But honestly I don’t think they are all winnable.

Min: definitely the better team and not looking bad with dobbs, plus Jefferson will be back.

ATL: winnable but they are a good team just not coached well (sound familiar?)

AZ: Murray is back in a prove them wrong situation

GB: history speaks for itself but I do see Chicago absolutely dismantling Green Bay. Revenge tour.

While I agree they are winnable games, I’m not certain they are winnable for the Chicago

[–] lkn240@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

To me even going 2-2 in those games would exceed my expectations. As of right now I think we win one.

[–] Atmosy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I hate to say this, but my opinion is nobody here knows very much. It’s not necessarily that your avg. redditor doesn’t know the sport, there’s some great analysis in every thread. But 99% of our collective knowledge comes from watching a game play out. When it comes to personnel stuff though, who could even tell you why those coaches got fired earlier in the season? We have so little insider info. We have fun analyzing & critiquing, but at the end of the day it’s all guesswork.

I guess a personal example would be, a long time ago I had the chance to be in the locker room after a game and listen to Wannstedt’s post game team talk after a win. It was honestly one of the best, most motivational, and absolutely life changing speeches I’ve ever heard in my life from any source. It was flat out fucking incredible. But when you look at his record being below .500, and the way he was discussed in the media, he was vilified. He was called a “bad coach” so much it was actually considered a fact. But my God… that speech! It was absolutely fucking mindblowing how awesome it was. You never hear that Wannstedt was the greatest coach ever, or an actual true leader. He’s never mentioned in talks with any of the legends. All you hear is the crap! And holy shit. I would have ran onto the beaches of Normandy for that man after I heard it, and I was just a bystander. No lie.

So I guess my point is, nobody here actually knows the man. Nobody here actually knows what the right choice is, with actual experience and knowledge to back it up. Nobody’s opinion, although possibly correct, are truly informed. It’s something to keep in mind when you’re delving into the Reddit or sports journalism hive mind.

[–] Expert_Read_488@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You need be Thrown in jail (jk😭) Get rid of everybody who cares if they get 7 wins

[–] No_Lie2467@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

MIN is not a win for us. The Passtronaut is goated

[–] Slotega@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I need to see this QB and coaching staff win against a winning team. That is what matters to me. Need to take one off of Detroit or the Browns.

[–] jmrogers31@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That would mean they went 7-6 after starting 0-4. They would probably run it back again.

[–] PowerfulAd1661@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] friendpalbuddyguy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like it's incredibly simple, I want the bears to win and I literally don't care how they do that. Flus stays flus goes, Justin stays Justin goes. I do not care, just win. If they can't do it move on

[–] Slizzerd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Keep him if they get to seven wins and Justin is looking good. Fire him if we can get Harbaugh.

[–] hammerSmashedNail@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If the bears run it back with this squad they will find a new rock bottom. It’s a Christmas miracle the players haven’t checked out yet. The players know this coaching staff doesn’t have the formula for success. They like money but they’ll want to win too. Think about what Roquan said. Do you think DJ wants to waste his skill on bad teams his whole career? It’s the final countdown to this era in bears football.

[–] Feral_Hamst3r@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I for one, do not want to go back to .500 seasons with no playoff births. The only thing Flus has been good for is getting us the record for good draft picks, but Poles does the work to turn them into profit. Flus cannot stay in the long run

[–] CatsMakeMeHappier@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah I mean if I compare my depression to Nagy’s last year to Flus’ second year and I can tell you I’m not as depressed.

[–] JediM4sterChief@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The tough part about this is when the year started, I expected 7 wins to be the minimum threshold to keep everyone.

But I don't think anyone had these events unfolding to get us there. It'd all be based on eye-test and consistency at that point. 50-50 I'd still say fire everyone

[–] ConservativebutReal@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Flus tenure tied to QB - if you pick 1 and take a QB you can’t wreck him with coaching changes so higher probability of a firing if they decide to move on from Fields.

[–] -_-Moss-_-_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is Stockholm syndrome

[–] keithstonee@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We definitely run it back with Fields regardless. We still need to build more than just QB. And we can really bulk up the roster by not drafting a QB at 1.
