Richard Oakes, born on this day in 1942, was a Mohawk indigenous activist and leader within the Red Power movement, playing a prominent role in the 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 - 1971.

Oakes promoted Native American studies in university curricula and is credited for helping to change U.S. federal government "Termination" policies (policies regarding assimilation of indigenous people into the culture of the colonizer) of Native American peoples and culture.

In 1969, Oakes led a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island with LaNada Means, approximately 50 California State University students, and 37 others. On January 5th, 1970, Oakes' 12-year-old daughter, Yvonne, fell to her death from concrete steps. After her funeral, Oakes left the island.

In 1972, Oakes was shot and killed in Sonoma, California, by Michael Morgan, a YMCA camp manager. Allegedly, Oakes violently confronted Morgan, and Morgan responded by drawing a handgun and fatally shooting Oakes.

Oakes was unarmed when he was shot. Morgan claimed he acted in self-defense, and was acquitted on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

"We do not fear your threat to charge us with crimes on our land. We and all other oppressed peoples would welcome spectacle of proof before the world of your title by genocide. Nevertheless, we seek peace."

Richard Oakes

The Greenlanders are making prisons. They used to not have prisons, now they're turning what they did have into prisons and I am not a fan, and nobody is as upset about it as me.

NSFWI keep telling people my lusciously bodacious mommy milkers are heavy and in the way but they think I'm being modest. Now we have a group photo where my anime tiddies take up half the frame. Tried to warn them πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

Push a series of lit up buttons in sequence like Simon Says for the low-low price of $6000? Buddy, that isn't the Star Wars hotel, that's just EU4 with all DLC

I'm gonna be alone in my house for the next three weeks and my dog's not even around any more to keep me company sadness

Combined with some drama I'm not privy to chilling my usual friend group ATM I'm sorta lonelymaxxing, I'll need to really crack my knuckles and really dig myself into some escapist media I think. Maybe I'll rewatch Farscape or something

I feel like the sentences in long term nuclear waste disposal messages should be site taglines.

This place is a message... and part of a system of messages... pay attention to it! Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture. This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger. The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us. The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. The danger is to the body, and it can kill. The form of the danger is an emanation of energy. The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

for someone so anti-apps my two dates off of them have been infinitely better than my one irl friend set-up date (that one was pleasant but dry and idt she was a bad person or anything). it's only a sample size of two so idt it means much but huh, it's certainly something i noticed (both of my app first dates were honestly fucking awesome)

[–] SoylentSnake@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago

i still hate the apps but i guess i love people

There should be an rpg where your party is a band and the world is like a sorta Streets of Fire/The Warriors/Miami Connection sorta blown out 80s mix where everyone knows martial arts and has strong feelings about rock music. It needs biker gangs, ninjas, neon, chains on boots etc.

Hot take: i dont think arts should be a job but while were in capitalism we should do whatever to not work for evil corp or body destroying labor.

In socialism. It still wouodnt be a job but people would have enough free time to pursue art to the point where it doesnt matter if you get paid or not. Id like to imagine all the people working for evil corp or doing other useless labor would be used to fix the broken planet.

Turtle shells contain nerve endings and they can feel through their shell. Their shell is basically their ribs in fact.

Turtles are the only known animal on earth that forms a shell on the outside of its body through a fusion of modified ribs, vertebrae, and shoulder girdle bones.

I am ridiculously happy that someone finally gave me a nickname that they use regularly! Not that I don't like my name, quite the opposite, but a nickname comes from shared experience and familiarity so it feels different.

It sounds lame but I have been quietly desperate for a nickname for most of my adult life, but it's one of those things that you can't really be proactive about. I didn't want to give myself a nickname or even ask someone else to give me a nickname, I wanted it to be organic and it's finally happened! Makes me happy every time he calls me by it

Why do I keep playing Helldivers 2? All it does is piss me off. I end every single mission screaming myself hoarse and punching my CRT until my knuckles are bloody. I wish for nothing but an endless pox upon the worthless scum who join my missions, and when I try to play solo it's even worse because I can't blame anyone else when I get caught trying to stealth and inevitably start an endless cycle of reinforcements chasing me from wall to wall across the map. I hate the stupid primary weapons, I hate the stupid heavy weapons, I hate the stupid sidearms and grenades. I hate the stupid robots that charge me with chainsaws, I hate the stupid insects that charge me with claws. I hate hate hate hate HATE!

But I do enjoy calling in eagle support and seeing a big kill streak.

My apartment creates a really low buzz every once in a while. It really sucks cause it's essentially getting blasted with infrasound. It only hits a certain point of my living room to big me but thsts also where my couch is. I am no a crackpot and can record it if you pay for a really sensitive mic

has everyone played tetris? does everyone know what tetris is?

seems unlikely but at the same time, unbelievable that a modern human could not have played tetris at any point. my 1930s vintage grandfolk played tetris lmao

Saw a tiktok of a guy with a huuuge lawn that was all one type of grass, with sand underneath it to discourage bugs and weeds. Every single comment was somebody dunking on him for having a boring lawn that's bad for the environment, less a handful of ameribrains wondering why kids seemingly hate grass.

One of the positives to Fallout 4 (that was squandered) is until the BoS stampede into the game, all of the Factions are relatively new and refreshing. The main ones the Institue, the minutemen and the Railroad. But also, minor groups like the Atom Cats and the Children of the Atom (they were in FO3 but barely). As well as antagonists like the Gunners, Forged and Triggermen. It's just a real shame none of them were really fleshed out. They shouldn't have even had generic raiders, like FO:NV the majority of hostile human antagonists should have been in a faction (like the Vipers, Jackals, Fiends).
