unfortunately, it is totally possible to make that trip if you have a submarine that wasn't designed by a startup-brained moron

they'll probably be fine

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 40 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, I'm not sure what point he's trying to prove. Of course the industry is safe, that's what all the safety requirements when building and operating a submarine is all about.

[–] Chronicon@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago (2 children)

thats the point though there kinda aren't any requirements I thought? Its all voluntary iirc?

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 31 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

There are standards, that's why the OceanGate rich fools also had to sign a waiver acknowledging that the craft was not certified at all

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The standards are if James Cameron writes you a letter that says "Damn dude you're gonna fucking die you dumb motherfucker. Eywa is gonna hear you when you're becoming crab food at the bottom of the ocean." You have to up your game.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

James Cameron has the woke mind virus, do not listen to him billionaires like Elon Musk. Build sheet metal tubes and plunge yourselves to the darkest depths of the ocean it's safe.

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

I'm legitimately convinced we could solve the musk problem by saying that woke moralists are trying to impose their will through draconian reinforced double hull theories.

[–] Chronicon@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I guess a lot of standards are this way to some extent but like, a voluntary certification produced by some random company for profit is barely a standard at all, when it comes to certification of life-safety-critical equipment. That's what I meant by "kinda aren't any requirements, it's all voluntary".

It's kinda silly that the guy who tries to go out to sea in a plastic bubble or whatever gets stopped by the coast guard but rich idiots they're like "go ahead sir right away sir"

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

Like with most thing there's all those requirements are to get government funding. (That red tape you hear people who don't know what delta p means whining about)

Any numbnuts can put a bucket over their head and jump off a ship in the middle of the ocean.

[–] TechnoUnionTypeBeat@hexbear.net 29 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Triton Submersibles is actually one of those companies that knows what they're doing. Their big project was the DSV Limiting Factor, which is a legitimate deep sea research vessel, so unless they're using another shed build submarine they'll probably survive

But it might mean that more startup brained billionaires get lulled into a false sense of security and build more OceanGate style tubs

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been saying we should all act like this is the coolest thing ever because musk will absolutely try to copy it but lead the design himself leading to an actual ocean gate 2.0.

Wait

I did hear someone say that these subs tend to cost 2x what the one these nerds are going down in. So here's hoping that 2x savings owns them.

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yea the last one failed because they bought used parts that were literally advertised as being non viable for deep water trips.

If a billionaire decided to not try to save a couple grand by using second hand parts and a madcatz controller this should be trivial for them. It's why the last one was so funny. He had all the money in the world so he thought that made him smarter than nature.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

"why has nobody thought to build a submarine like an airplane hull? truly, I am a world-historic genius"

[–] qaopjlll@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

At least we can take solace in the fact that they're going to be miserable for several days a cold, cramped submarine instead of relaxing and enjoying themselves in the luxury of their private island or whatever

[–] orshelack@hexbear.net 38 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The orcas have a chance to do the funniest thing possible.

[–] Satanic_Mills@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

By Gawd, that's White Gladis's music!

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Hold on, actually let's hope for this to succeed so they relax and we get a bigger catch next time

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 35 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Someone who's good with art, help me pitch rich people on a massive underwater city that's only for rich people and nothing bad will ever happen to rich people there

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I really gotta play that game eventually, tho they say it's not cool enough cuz it's a libertarian critique of libertarianism

[–] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

It deconstructs Ayn Rand by playing it straight. Don't expect Disco Elysium analysis, but it does have good writing. Excellent twist for its time, and I won't spoil it just in case.

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

The twist is an m. night shamelan (close enough) "free will is an illusion" rug pull but I really don't think it takes away from the criticism of how they got to that point.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago

Good plan, good plan

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I will completely unironically become a Poseidon worshiper if he grants us this miracle

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Lol, let's hope its in another ship that has a name that's an affront to comrade Poseidon, or another ocean deity.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If they were smart, they'd name it The Nobody

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I guess being stuck roaming for years on end is better than dead. With a name like Nemo though maybe there's some sea monster sized sea turtles we haven't discovered yet.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Sea turtles eat squid, and since there are giant squid surely there must be giant turtles to eat them.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Welcome to the true faith. Hallowed are his rippling abs.

No more half pressures water

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This time it's a garbage can with some duct tape and a playstation 1 controller

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago

Mad Katz controller

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago

off brand ps1 controller

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

inshallah someone on the crew understands humanity's predicament and will do what needs to be done

oh and also: Davy Jones' Lockerbie

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I was talking to a coworker about this and had to defend my glee by proving that this billionaire is a demon. Found an old reddit thread where someone in Dayton, OH was being sued by his real estate investment firm, Connor Group, for one million (1,000,000) dollars for publicly complaining about them not sending maintenance crews to fix problems with his apartment.

Found a few others with people warning others not to move into his apartment complexes for the same reason.

Sad to hear that Triton is a real submarine company and he won't die due to a Logitech controller shorting out or whatever.

[–] SpasmodicColon@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

SpaceX is a real company, and their rockets explode all the time... Inshallah on this sub

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

From your lips comrade

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 19 points 2 years ago

Can't wait for the pilot to forget his wrist straps and accidentally throw his Wiimote steering wheel into the viewport.

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 years ago

How many billionaires are gonna fit inside this one?

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago
[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Every year we should let the billionaires compete to see who gets to go die trying to see a boat

[–] determinism2@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Bring Les with you.

[–] The_Walkening@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

Praying that everyone on that sub has an extremely ΔP time in the North Atlantic

[–] Barx@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

I would love for billionaires to turn this into a dick measuring contest. Just lining up to die one after the other because, "those guys were chumps let me show your how much billionairer I am".

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

That's the terror of knowing

What this dive is about

Watching billionaires screaming

"Let me out!"
