I would just like to make the point that that is not normal.

I'm not saying it wasn't safe, it's just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones. Some of them are built so that they don't fall over at all.

Dang, having trouble finding that video. Anyone?

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Was this ~~tanker~~ pylon safe?

[–] taldennz@lemmy.nz 31 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Well not this one obviously. I just don't want to give the impression that pylons aren't safe.

In the plains? Chance in a million.

[–] Raxiel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Is that unusual?

[–] AlexWIWA@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 year ago

I knew this would be here. Thank you for keeping the dream alive

We must construct additional pylons.

[–] neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 61 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The solution is clear.

You must construct additional pylons.

Maybe the energy minister requires more minerals?

A gust of wind? In the middle of a field? Chance in a million!

[–] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

it's not very vertical either

Yes, my understanding is that this is unexpected behavior. It's more conventional for these pylons to fall over in groups rather than individually.

For example, last year:

Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:46 AM August 05, 2023

The sudden collapse of seven power pylons in Manila’s Binondo district on Thursday afternoon not only prompted calls for an investigation into the immediate cause..

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — At least seven large electricity pylons collapsed onto a highway near the South African capital of Pretoria, causing a multiple-vehicle crash, city authorities and emergency services said Monday.

Five electricity pylons collapsed on the R101 in Hammanskraal on Monday night, Eskom confirmed.

This came just a day after seven collapsed on the N4 in Pretoria.

This "lone pylon syndrome" is rather concerning.

let's consider ourselves lucky the entire herd isn't affected. Disease can propagate quickly between individuals

[–] Zhayl@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

He's right, it shouldn't

It looks like a poorly rendered video game until you look at the people.

[–] Batman@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

If we construct a space elevator we could just lift it each time it falls

[–] Rubanski@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

My take: if a pylon falls, it should pull itself up by the bootstraps!

[–] uis@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Pylon is too big to fail

[–] ConstantPain@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It's a quantum issue. Brownian motion at the base of the pylon is the culprit here. Just freeze it with liquid helium and you'll be good.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Spawn more pylons regurgitation and neighing sounds

[–] psychonova@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

clearly it was made by boeing...
