You're in Germany Ronald. Gorbachev isn't ba politician in East Germany. It's a different fucking country! The Soviets didn't like the Berlin Wall, but the East Germans did it anyway BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFERENT FUCKING COUNTRY!

I get it, it's just anti-Communist, orientalism that assumes the Communist Hordes of the East are all beholden to their Soviet masters or whatever. But even the United States' puppet regimes went and did their own shit sometimes, so long as it didn't rock the boat too much. How hard is it to give these Warsaw pact countries some agency in your understanding of the world???
