I didn’t know that. Smash Mouth was from my time growing up. Beyond recognizing them on the radio because there was a point in time where they got played a fucking lot, I was never a fan. I knew about what happened to his son, but i reckon there are a lot of people who knew this.
I do have to wonder now, how much of that was from alcohol rot, and how much of it was underlying racism. I suppose that just sounds like I’m excusing it now, which Im not, but I know that a lot of his behavior from recent years past was likely attributable to being an alcoholic. Maybe it’s directly attributable to being an alcoholic racist. Alcoholism runs in my family like wildfire and I’ve seen a few good people turned into monsters from drinking. Or maybe I just don’t know what I’m talking about. I don’t know anything about this man beyond the fact that he sang in a popular band so.

In my defense, I knew he was a drunk. I didn’t know he was popping off Nazi salutes at gigs. He struck me as a hot mess, but not a Nazi. I figured that was just Phil Anselmo’s trademark. TMYK.

maybe the extra decade does Things to you but i had a solid 12+ years where i was permanently drunk and i never threw any sieg heils
