https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/does-nicotine-affect-muscle-growth

There is data to show nicotine might have a performance increasing effects on people. However, the idea is more that you ingest a safe amount via methods that are not smoking/chewing.

THAT'S WHY I DRINK A SUGAR-FREE REDBULL WITH EXTRA CREATINE, PROTEIN POWDER, AND PROBIOTICS MIXED IN WHILE CHEWING SEVEN ZYNS BEFORE EVERY 15 MINUTE SET. I NO LONGER SLEEP AND MY HEARTBEATS CANNOT BE DISTINGUISHED. MY LUNGS ARE PERFECT AND MY BODY IS PRISTINE!

[–] JustJack23@slrpnk.net 85 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Your heartbeat is measured in Hz

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 25 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Come to think of it, a normal heart rate would be like 1-3hz depending on activity

[–] Clanket@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Thanks for clarifying that

Im stealing this for if my brother complains about his heartbeat after staying up for like 18 hours on six cans of red bull again

Nicotine itself is hardly worse than say caffeine. But obviously the negative effects of burning and inhaling a cigarette (with all that it contains), especially the carcinogenic agents, is absolutely stupid to think it's an even trade to pump your workout

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

I mean, we are talking about a crowd where steroid abuse is super common. Taking some nicotine to get a pump isn't really anywhere near being outside the realm of an unreasonable health risk, to a large portion of this demographic.

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago (5 children)

I've heard that but how else is one supposed to get nicotine in the system? Chewing gum? Patches? Vapes? Is it soluble in a substance that's safe to consume?

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 10 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Nicotine is water soluble. You can take a wet tobacco leaf off the plant and it'll soak into your skin and get you a bit buzzed (or in my case when I discovered this mid harvest if you touch enough it'll get you massively high and nauseous). Imo one of the best ways to get some in relative safety is grow your own, they're really easy, and just put a leaf under your tongue for a bit then spit it out

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Its highly highly illegal to grow it in my country unfortunately.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Don't let laws stop you from doing harmless shit.

Unless, of course, your country aggressively enforces that and has extreme penalties.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemm.ee 4 points 4 months ago

Part of the problem with using tobacco this way (basically diy dip) is that tobacco leaves themselves contain carcinogenic nitrates that will still have long term health impacts. If you're going to consume nicotine, it's best that your source is as close to chemically pure as you can get. Synthetic nicotine is by and large the safest option outside of simply not consuming nicotine in any form. It's still incredibly addictive and cardiotoxic

[–] graycube@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

After that article the other day about caffeine in hand lotion, I'm now surprised they don't put nicotine in hand lotion.

[–] 000999@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If u aren't already addicted, don't even bother. Nicotine is fucking insane

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] 000999@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Alright then. Hopefully you aren't like me though - constantly vaping 20mg nic salt throughout the day (I get cravings after like 10 minutes)

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

good luck quitting it, i was on 32mg juice for like 4 years before i figured it out

[–] Comment105@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Nicotine in comparable or larger doses from non-toxic or much less toxic sources is arbitrarily limited for stupid reasons.

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

Profits of tobacco companies isn't a stupid reason when ur a lobbyist for the tobacco companies

[–] roguetrick@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

It interacts with nicotinic receptors in your stomach, and you'll have the liver first past effect after that. Eating it is a bad idea.

Edit: I forgot to mention, absorbing it by your esophagus can irritate your vagus nerve and cause uncontrollable hiccups.

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

I smoked for pretty much my whole life. Quit with varying degrees of success many many times. I switched to nicotine pouches 2 months ago, and it's been fairly great at reducing the damage of cigarettes while not dealing with the actual addiction.

Still need to watch out for gum recession, so it's not exactly 100% healthy, but smoking causes gum recession anyway and I'm not destroying my lungs anymore, so pretty solid for harm reduction.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 67 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If you just smoke two (for the health benefits) you don't even need to work out.

[–] Jerkface@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Well if I smoke four (for the health benefits), then it's like I worked out twice!

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 42 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Smoking doesn't increase testosterone ... it makes your voice sound like you have more testosterone

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

So if I have more testosterone, at one point I'll be coughing?

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago

Are you John Wayne?

[–] Aganim@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I once called a friend at home, back before mobile phones were common, only to have some older man answer. Shit, did I call the wrong number? My mind started racing: his mom is divorced and doesn't have a boyfriend from what my friend told. It's unlikely my friend's voice dropped 3 octaves overnight.. Fuck, did somebody murder them and picked up the phone? Am I ne... Oh wait, his mom is a living chimney, ah.. 'Hi *friend's mom*'.

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 25 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I've seen this once before. Addicted and hindered but can't accept it. So they convinced themselves that what they were doing was right

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I mean, this is clearly a bit, but I don't think addicts smoke exactly one cigarette a day. Some people who smoke small amounts never become addicted. I used to smoke, like, half a pack over a few weeks, forget where I left it, and then go months without smoking. Haven't smoked at all in probably eight years now, not because I intentionally quit but just because I couldn't be assed to carry them around any more. (I really only started buying cigs so that I could stop telling people I didn't smoke when they asked to bum one.)

[–] Boomkop3@reddthat.com 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

So you were basically enabling people's addiction?

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 4 months ago

What can I say, I aim to please!

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 24 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Either that, or retarded is fucking him

[–] Syltti@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Retarded do be fucking a lot of us... Without consent, I might add.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

And no lube either

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago

Autism doesn't count as retardation. I looked it up when I used to play league and people would ask if I was fucking retarded. Was gonna be like 'yes lol' but it doesn't count.

[–] balderdash9@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 months ago

Well, no, but actually yes

[–] midnight_puker@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago
[–] ladicius@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Yep. Completely retarded.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 months ago

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Ive seen people talk about how to increase their testosterone level(or avoid decreasing it), but arent there pills with the purpose of increasing it?

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

my dad has a testosterone gel. because without it he cannot gain hardly any muscle at all, like I worked out for like 2 months and could lift more than he could in over 1+ year of working out 5 days a week.

[–] cRazi_man@lemm.ee 6 points 4 months ago

The purpose of working out is to look cool......... Now that I've discovered cigarettes that's mission accomplished.
