Aaaand it's gone, and I've been banned from the sub.

got 80,000 views and 1300 upvotes before is disappeared though, so I see that as a win, I'm sure a few people signed up.

To be fair, I was spamming should have read the rules better, a warning would have been nice.

[–] totallyNotARedditor@lemm.ee 55 points 2 months ago (9 children)

I'm here because of that post lol

Welcome to Lemmy, here are a few pointers to help you settle in

[–] cm0002@lemmy.cafe 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Welcome! We've got memes on deck at !memes@lemmy.world and if you're a programmer of some kinds we got !programmer_humor@programming.dev to scratch that itch and be sure to drop a shit(post) off at !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world or if you want SCIENCE and memes head over to the wonderful !science_memes@mander.xyz or if you just want regular SCIENCE mander.xyz is full of sciency comms like !science@mander.xyz and !astronomy@mander.xyz . !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also nice this time of year, but you'll have to post before you can leave.

We're not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies, but here they're mostly on the Tankie Triad lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. For most instances you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you'd rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distant check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works

[–] totallyNotARedditor@lemm.ee 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (11 children)

Wait. I'm too new to understand the second part of this. What are Tankies? What's up with the .ml instance? Is the meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works like an observatory of .ml shenanigans? Sorry, I'm honestly out of the loop

Edit: interesting responses. Thank you all for your input! :)

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago (4 children)

There's a diagram that illustrates this pretty well:

Is the meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works like an observatory of .ml shenanigans?

Yes, it was started as an observatory of lemmygrad.ml, but it's also relevant to lemmy.ml and hexbear.net (the Tankie triad). There are also !tankiejerk@lemmy.world, which just focuses on all kinds of tankies from all instances, !fediverse_vs_disinfo@lemmy.dbzer0.com, which focuses on disinformation (again, from all instances) and !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com, which focuses on moderator overreach (for all instances). It's also the official, approved and recommended way of complaining about mod action here on lemmy.dbzer0.com.

Tankies are authoritarian leftists, basically soviet union style communists.

Also, you can link to communities with whats called "bang notation": !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works - this is like the r/ on reddit.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

Tankies are people who play apologetics for authoritarian dictators who have claimed to be socialist or communist, and who will often excuse any action in opposition to "the west".

More formally, they're the cathartic branch of Marxist-Leninists (MLs). Lemmy's a small space, and it's a place that many MLs landed after bouncing off of Reddit, and the core developers count themselves as MLs.

The flagship Lemmy server is lemmy.ml, but the Tankie trolls have their own server, lemmygrad.ml where they go and be all 4chan-like.

"excessive promotion", right.

You're doing great work.

[–] mmddmm@lemm.ee 36 points 2 months ago

Banned from r/BuyFomEU due to excessive promotion...

How are people supposed to behave on that sub?

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Really? I was able to comment a couple of minutes ago.

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 17 points 2 months ago

I still see Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/BuyFromEU.

You can comment but I think it's just "Hidden" idk

[–] AizawaC47@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago

No… you are doing an amazing job. Like that’s wild and absolutely phenomenal!

[–] Gbbrl@feddit.uk 10 points 2 months ago

Will add to the presumably long list, I signed up because of the post.

[–] maplebar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think you should contact the moderation team. I'd be really curious to hear what they have to say is "excessive" about you informing people of EU-based alternatives to Reddit...

If nothing else it'll be a good laugh here on fedi.

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

I did contact the mod team, but they have issues eg. making false claims like this

They also have beef with r/Buy_European on reddit https://old.reddit.com/r/Buy_European/comments/1j6jeg3/the_other_buyeuropean_sub_is_apparently_now/

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Seems like an odd sub to promote Lemmy in.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 months ago

They were likely posting about the BuyFromEU Lemmy community.

[–] TheHalifaxJones@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

I signed up!

So much talk about duplicate communities, which is just so weird to me, seeing as reddit also constantly has duplicate communities despite being centralized :D which one the main one is also sometimes changes based on events/drama

Seems to me just people being resistant to change just because it's change.

[–] PlantJam@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's also my biggest complaint, but I avoid it by just browsing local all.

[–] Azzu@lemm.ee 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah but that's what I'm saying, this happens in exactly the same way on Reddit too

[–] arschflugkoerper@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Just attempting to go to /r/anime for example ist still a lot easier tho.

I‘m not saying you can’t get used to it, but its obviously something thats worse. Especially if the whole federation thing is new for them.

I remember duplicate communities seemed like it would be a problem, until you experience it and realise it's actually a feature of the fediverse.

I was just so used to the centralised mentality. I honestly have a hard time putting myself back in that headspace…

Duplicate communities are a good thing anyway.

It's crazy that on Reddit a community can get hijacked by some fucking weirdo who has control of things basically forever.

[–] RowRowRowYourBot@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

I like that the top comment went from “there are too many communities I want just one” to “Im joining to make it better for others”.

[–] medusadeluxe@lemm.ee 24 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Now that Reddit sucks, this app is sure to take off. I’ve been banned for 3 days, but you best believe when I’m back I’m going to be recommending this app to people.

Checkout https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/fedibridge it's commited to helping guide people to Lemmy.

I like to use something like

Try out the European-Hosted Reddit alternative called Lemmy, https://phtn.app/

It also has a mobile app: https://vger.app/settings/install

To guide people.

You can check out, but you can never leave.

[–] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 11 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I just left a comment 2 years ago or so that got me permanently banned and came here and never looked back. Can't get my wife to switch because there's not enough stuff here. She got an account but just went back 2 days later.

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Main issue seems to be if your not a Linux nerd or into degoogling there just isnt much on here yet.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm neither and I'm having fun here. Lots of science, Star Trek, cute animals, shitposts, thoughtful commentaries, books and movies... And things are getting better. It's already so much better than when I first came.

Great quote but one of the points is that Lemmy makes it easier to switch between servers haha!

[–] Condiment2085@lemm.ee 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I feel that the best thing about federated social like Lemmy is just that there's no reason to engagement farm. Like I could get big on Lemmy but unless I'm able to direct that traffic somewhere else effectively, who cares?

[–] match@pawb.social 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

but how will our social media platforms achieve Infinite Growth Forever without brand content??
