Oh I didn't even notice the ad.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 hours ago

Ddddamn, I don't know how you're still a teenager and already cooking better than me lol. Sorry about the mild ageism, I remember hating comments like this when I was young and hear I am making them myself, but you're so far ahead of even so many fully established adults who I know.

Total aside: I just have to say I am so triggered by the lady in the video for Ciorbă de pui a la grec reaching for salt after handling raw chicken without washing her hands 😮 haha that's me being a germ freak -- it does look delicious, though.

It's OK my friend, just catch the next one. You can probably make it to the next bus stop even, that's what I like to do.

fire without trigger being pulled

a large sore spot for Sig enthusiasts.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 24 points 8 hours ago (8 children)

Yeah just take the bus

Interesting distinction. I use a small managed vps, but didn't consider that self-hosting, personally. I do aspire to switch to a homelab and figure out dynamic DNS and all that one day.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 9 hours ago

Self-housing, Linux, vim; hell, even gardening -- they all fit this saying?axiom? pretty well.

Careful about bosses telling tall tales. Happens in the contracting and piecemeal space a lot. Confirm with other seamstress. Hell, start a coop and poach clients directly.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 10 hours ago

Aye that would be acceptable. If you twist my arm, I guess

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 5 points 10 hours ago (6 children)

Oh yeah reflex is a huge skill gate. I could basically never land a parry in Demon's Souls, so hopefully there are some nice settings to dial that in.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 1 points 10 hours ago

You'll find most people around here have a different definition. That's the one I'm using.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 4 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Wow you're flourishing. Also cool you're going straight-edge. I wasted SO much time on alcohol and nicotine specifically.

I can only really tolerate soup when it's cold, but I love a curry — which is pretty damn close to soup honestly so maybe I'm in soup denial lol.

Do you have a specialty? Mine would probably be a simple coconut lentil curry + carrots in the winter.

Gloriously researched and delivered with the characteristic Ed Zitron panache. I can't believe this hasn't been shared here yet!

You should just read it, but I knew I had to share it when I got to this part:

spoiler

Stoll's analysis also isn't based on hundreds of hours of research and endless reporting. Mine is! I will grab you from the ceiling like the Wallmaster from Zelda and you will never be heard from again.

Emphasis mine.

This is pretty well known, but I'm sure there are some people out there who haven't thought of it, because I was one of them until just this year.

You can find links to RSS and Atom feeds below the comic.

I love this RSS feed because it even shows the easter egg text when you hover over the comic in your feed agg.

Hi folks, and welcome to the 10th writing club update. That's right, it's the big "One-Oh" - we're in the double digits now.

I hope you are all safe and as well as can be, and able to find some time for creativity/writing. The weather here has been a hodgepodge of warm to surprisingly brisk; although seems to be angling towards warmer now. It will be nice to see the pollinators waking up and doing their rounds soon. Life doing its thing and all that.

Onward to our writers! By my count we've got:

Here is a link to last month's post if you'd like to refresh your memory, or just take a little trip down memory late.

My average word count per day for 365 days came to 433. This challenge also took me a bit longer than a year to complete. The book 1 draft was finished on March 9th 2025.

I really like how the author uses a streak, but only to the point where it's useful for them personally. For instance, according to some people they "failed" in keeping their streak. I know people who keep this big grids of 365 checkboxes to motivate themselves -- shame themselves -- into never missing a single day. The author here, misses plenty of days. But as they put it themselves, "Did I fail then? NO!! I finished the draft!!"

They also eschew "makeup days" out of hand - something that I know can be like a millstone around one's neck after missing a few days.

The post body:

[...] big refactoring project to replace the usage of double types with decimal types. Everything seemed to go well, at least until there was a network hiccup and the application couldn't connect to the database. Let's see if you can figure out what happened:

MessageBox.Show("Please decimal check the connection details. Also check firewall settings (port 1433) and network connectivity.");

What a clbuttic mistake.

I don't actually get the joke with clbuttic, though. 🤔

Welcome to this ninth/IX/9th writing club update!

Happy mid-March to you all, my well lettered friends. I hope you've been graced with some nice weather as we in the northern hemisphere enter into the warmer time of the year. Today is delightfully dreary and overcast where I'm at, which I'm hoping to channel into some indoor creativity.

Okay! Here are the Writers:

Please see last month's post if you need to refresh your memory on what your goals were.

Just an FYI that while "membership" in the writing club is fluid and open, so too are the names above simply my best guess, without judgement, at who is participating on any particular month. So if you don't see your name up there and you'd like me to add it, just shoot me a DM or even better just share what you're working on and you'll be added right back to the roster the following month. :)

So I've got a new domain and I want to do some fun stuff with it. Specifically, I'm looking for something that's fun to make as well as use.

I've got experience making webservers in p much every major language. My first instinct is to use NextJS just because it's fast and I've used it most recently, but then I also feel the allure of just rawdawging my own HTML/CSS+JS, like my forebears might've done. XML is kind of a pain to handbomb, though; all those closing tags, etc... Though I'm sure there are plugins for that.

Any suggestions? What was the last tool you used that really sparked your joy of creativity? Any really fun frameworks, stacks, editors, etc?

Welcome to the eighth writing club update!

Happy mid-February. I hope folks are keeping safe and comfortable. I managed to experience some crunchy snow finally, so that's nice. Crnch crnch crnch, snow underfoot. In my list of sonic experiences this rates as high tier, maybe even higher than crunchy leaves.

If I had one piece of unsolicited advice it would be to take a long walk with only a notebook for company.

Okay that's enough musing. On to the stars of our show - the Writers:

Please see last month's post if you need to refresh your memory on what your goals were.

I can't wait to hear your updates!

Welcome to the seventh writing club update!

Happy new year!!! 🎉🎉🎉 I was just getting used to drawing the "4" in "2024" in my notebooks, and now I have to get used to a whole new number. I always liked "5" though, so hopefully we get along alright.

As always I hope everyone has had a good month (but not so good as to leave nothing to stoke the fires of creativity).

Anyway, on with the important part - the Writers!

I can't wait to hear from you all. Your updates no matter how trivial always manage to motivate me for the next month.

As always, anyone and everyone are welcome to comment or share their own work in addition to the club participants above.

I find I get some really quality introspection / observations around this time of year, and also just during holidays in general. Maybe it's just the time off, or maybe it's having an event to write around. I'm not sure.

Do other folks especially look forward to writing their thoughts down during the holidays? Like I'm visiting family for a couple days, and I can't wait to document the memories that haven't even occurred yet.
