Dear gods. Without rare earth metals the US could regress technologically. We'd likely revert to cathode ray tubes and other post WW2 tech. That is until fusion is sustainable and then we get fight over energy for some reason. Next thing you know it's October 23, 2077...

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
Rare earth metals aren’t even rare though. They are just not found in concentrated form like gold. And metallurgists in the past had a hard time isolating the metals that’s why they called them rare.
It’s just that China can mine them cheaply since the Chinese government doesn’t care about labor rights and the environment. Europe and Australia has rare earth metal deposits.
Europe and Australia do, but honestly, as a European, I'd rather trade with China than the US right now. Even though both are shit.
Why are we always having to choose the lesser of 2 evils! Where's the fkn good option!!!
Europe?
The US has deposits too. Some of the ones our military equipment needs most are found in Zinc mines and we let our refinery capability for them lapse in the 1990's. So all we actually need to do is get a refinery built.
Some wastelander is gonna find my bottle cap collection and get as excited as a pirate finding a buried chest full of gold dabloons. If they don't immediately go to New Vegas and visit Fisto then I collected them all for nothing
Luckily I'll be a dead gonk by then.. Wait, wrong universe. But no chance I'll end up as a ghoul.
Ooh I hope tubes come back. I need cheaper and better quality tubes for my guitar amp collection damn it!
If only we had an ally who needed our oversized military who also had a huge reverse of rare earth elements.
If only they were still an ally after the current shenanigans of the senile president.

It will be the Black Friday before another Great Depression.
....right?
....right???
fact check, true. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Black_Ops_II
Black Ops II's single-player campaign features two connected storylines, with the first set from 1986 to 1989 during the final years of the First Cold War, and the other set in 2025 during a Second Cold War and rare earths trade dispute[15] between the United States and China.
you fact checked the fiction
*explodes*
Fiction check.
A related tangent: Ghost Recon had a plot about Russia invading Georgia in 2008. That game was from 2001.
besides robotic weaponry, we are literally in this timeline
We have robotic weaponry
i was assuming mech
Mechs exist, theyre just shite.
Yeah, people often forget that human like robots are shit in general. A flying drone is a lot more efficient at delivering a grenade than a running mech.
I get a little uncanny valley twinge comparing the T2 intro to the demo videos of the current state of ambulatory humanoid machines.
It's only a little twinge, thankfully. Bipedal humanoid mech is kinda silly, IMHO.
Carcinisation is the way for terrestrial war-bots.
Turns out biological restrictions on things like wheels limit evolution
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
username checks out X3 is it just me or do images from sh.itjust.works always take several hours to load?
Robots have a very limited scope of their functionality compared to animals. Legs are good when you have to perform loads of different tasks to survive: chase, hide, climb, tear flesh apart, etc. A robot which only needs to deliver a grenade to an enemy doesn't need to do anything like that.
Did you forget about drones?
Also remote controlled tracked vehicles and robodogs have been used in ukraine.
Drones are unmanned vehicles
Does this mean that 8 year old was right about my mum?
yes
Out of rare earth metals? Just start a war with cyber robots! They are built from wood and love.
A Magic Doll made out of Wood and hate is an alternative
Ok, I'm calling shenanigans! Shenanigans!
This is clearly a simulation let me out!
You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave.
Wait why all countries? What did Canada do?
Trade the refined products to the US
If they hadn't noticed the rest of the world isn't really looking up to the current USA either.
You don't need to look up to a country to want to turn a profit right?
But some of them will fold. And china can’t be sure who will
Life imitates ~~art~~ call of duty black ops 2
Thd difference is that the president of US is female there, here is just a bitch...
We are manipulated. Check out the documentary Century of Self by Adam Curtis.
