Mine is literally being held together by two rubber bands.

Suggestions for a new one would be most welcome. Though to be clear, I'm not asking for an idealised wallet, I'm asking for the specific one that you have now that has lasted you X years without complaint

The more worn and frayed, the better

Edit: the above image is just a stock google photo

Have you considered a third rubber band?

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 15 points 2 weeks ago

^Yes^ ^😒^

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Does your area have any craft fairs or farmers markets? I bought mine from a local maker. Not as cheap as China but quality material and cheaper than a US corporation made version. I see them occasionally and they always say hi

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago

sadly none around here

Secrid Slim Wallet (Buy European: Dutch Company)

[–] shinratdr@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yep been using my Secrid since my doctor told me to stop keeping my wallet in my back pocket, I figured it was good to slim it down if it needs to go in my front pocket now.

Been using them for 10 years, I have replaced them but only because I like changing the colour/style every so often. Wouldn’t use anything else.

[–] sit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

Even though I’m not familiar with them I associated planned obsolescence when I saw their design.

Go to your local library and look for whatever "leather working for beginners" book they have and read it. Then go to the local craft store and buy a scrap of leather, and some thread. You can also youtube for how to make a wallet videos. You don't need many fancy tools use, a fork to mark where the evenly spaced holes should be, then a nail/hammer to punch the holes, and needle will work for sewing (though I'm told a real leather needle is much better and cheap if you buy any tools).

Note that your book will show you lots of fancy patterns you can put on the wallet with expensive tools. It is up to you if that is worth it.

You can use gaffer tape to rebuild some of the sections which have worn through.

[Edit] Though, looking at my wallet, I'm at the stage where the gaffer tape is wearing thin in places, so some of my gaffer tape needs gaffer tape.

I've hade one of the ridge titanium card wallets for the better part of a decade now. I thought the elastic would have worn out by now but it still isn't showing any signs of wear.

[–] rhacer@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ridge. It's minimalist. I've had mine for eight years and I love it.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Not Ridge (they're too pricey IMHO) but similar....

I really like this style that has a wrap around note pocket that closes. I don't like the "Money clip" method of having cash. I don't trust it. So having a sealed compartment for cash / receipts works better for me and you still have quick access to cards.

[–] sanpo@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

This German alternative is pretty good, although I remember them being a bit cheaper a few years ago...

They definitely are proud of their product. It was a huge change for me. I'd been a back pocket bifold or trifold guy my entire life, and I just got to the point I hated it. Had to remove it from my pocket if I was driving or riding my motorcycle or sitting for any extended period of time. It collected crap I had no need to collect, etc.

Bought my Ridge, my wife laughed and said"that elastic will never last". I'm still on my first elastic!

I bought them for two of my three sons who also love theirs.

All that said, I've looked a couple of times at ones like you shared, and think they would work great also.

I think my favourite wallet I've ever had was when I found a tyvek envelope, cut it open, and folded it into a wallet. There are videos you can find on origami wallets, it's dead simple. Not only is a tyvek one basically impervious to rips, you can rebuild a new one at the drop of a hat.

Prior to the US tariff fiasco, I would have easily recommended something from Dango - I absolutely love my T01, which I’ve had now for the better part of a decade and the only way to tell is to compare the rawhide under the band to the rest of the body..

..so while I don’t need a replacement anytime soon, I am also keen to see others recommendations!

I thought mine was bad but holy... that is impressive.

My kids thought it was embarrassing so bought me a cheap carbon fibre card holder (essentially a knock-off Ridge Wallet) and it's been great no having to deal with a bulky wallet anymore.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

(the image thumbnail is just a google image. My current wallet looks much worse)

[–] lnxtx@feddit.nl 3 points 2 weeks ago

Cordura-based fabric one.

[–] yumyumsmuncher@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago

Buy a wallet made with recycled materials from Etsy

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 3 points 2 weeks ago

I've been using a Jack Wolfskin Cashbag wallet for the past 5+ years and it's still in great shape. I bought it since it has an RFID shield against skimming.

Despite the English name it's a German company if that matters.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

I've been using a Ridge wallet for the last... 6 years? And it shows no sign of dying any time soon. I'm not a heavy cash user though so YMMV depending on whether you can get along with a money clip/strap

No way would I pay full price for it but I got this on sale, does the job no fuss: https://herschelsupplyco.co.uk/shop/wallets/charlie-cardholder-wallet I'm a minimalist where a wallet is concerned though, only carry notes in case of emergency

I like my Allet Original, which I've had for 10 years and is in excellent condition. The price has almost doubled since then, (from $35 to $65), but if I needed a new wallet today, I'd get another one.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

Bit steep for me!

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

My last wallet was an aluminum cardholder with a strap and it lasted a long time. Of course, it still lasts, though the elastic straps have gotten weaker.

My current wallet is an ultra-slim made out of recycled bicycle innertubes. I expect it to last quite a while.

Would love to see it

Whatever you go for make sure it blocks rfid to avoid having your cards skimmed

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Trayvax rocks. Felt stupid spending $65 on a wallet, probably never need another unless I lose it. eBay has some great deals.

[–] Hawk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

Immediately saw a police flag when I opened their site and noped out, seems like an awful American brand
