Most people don't realize how rare it is for a piece of textile to survive to this day. The condition is amazing!

More likely comfort or even just to stay on. They didn’t have elastic and a large pocket might have rolled and not stayed put. Putting it between the toes secures it.

I gotta say, I thought those were Big Bird shoes.
