Historical Artifacts

Just a community for everyone to share artifacts, reconstructions, or replicas for the historically-inclined to admire!

Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

Generally speaking, ruins should go to !historyruins@lemmy.world

Illustrations of the past should go to !historyillustrations@lemmy.world

Photos of the past should go to !HistoryPorn@lemmy.world

Notice how to the pattern does look really close to knitting. Still somewhat in between - produced with a single, eyed needle, but visually similar.

For context: People used to have only two big toes back then instead of 5 small ones like we have today

Most people don't realize how rare it is for a piece of textile to survive to this day. The condition is amazing!

Woah, Egypt kinda had "tabi" socks too, I wonder if it was also shaped by they type of footwear popular at the time

Neat!

More likely comfort or even just to stay on. They didn’t have elastic and a large pocket might have rolled and not stayed put. Putting it between the toes secures it.
