Bad as the firewall is, and I certainly wouldn't advocate for introducing it here, handing over full control of our public virtual spaces to private owners has also been a disaster.
Yeah, we really just wound up with the FAANG Firewall instead.
Not sure what practical solution there is that will protect the general public, but I know this aint it.
Allowing Russia free rein to directly manipulate US voters and create false realities has already enabled a fascist coup.
I don't want an authoritarian level of internet censorship, but not censoring hostile foreign lies online is a big part of the reason that russian-bought plutocrats are able to kill your grandma and thousands of other americans who need Medicaid to live.
This is my unpopular opinion as well. The reason why fascists in all western nations are on the rise is in my opinion the rising inequality on the one hand and propaganda and misinformation on the other hand.
I am thuroughly convinced thar lies told by firebrands are fanning the flames of fascism.
Curiously, most common Lemmy sites and even Reddit are not blocked.
