That's not petty, that's just being smart

[–] AgentOrangesicle@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Pettiness and pragmatism are two wildly different things. I'd also count her as pragmatic.

"Was." That's Abe and he was assassinated a few years ago.

[–] x4740N@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Wasn't the assassination due to some connection to a church if I recall correctly

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 32 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, Moonies. I can't remember why him. The kid that did it, his mom was grifted 100k or something. That's all I remember though.

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 46 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It was because Abe, like other LDP politicians, had an history of propping up the Church of Unification cult. The shooter picked him specifically because of a video of Abe speaking in one of their churches. Abe's family in particular has connections to the cult since the very foundation, and their ties to the LDP are something out of a "Like A Dragon"/"Yakuza" plot.

Yep.

People not from or really familiar with Japan and also South Korea... when you tell them that actually, weird ass insano religious cults actually fund and drive a very substantial amount of politics and prominent political personalities...

People often think you are being some kind of racist when you say that.

Nope. This is just actually true, to an extent that is often absurd/incomprehensible to many in the Anglosphere.

Which... is kinda weird, because, look at the US.

The Republican party, as in elected officials, is ... majority composed of outright christian nationalist theocrats? Supermajority?

That are functionally a death cult that is actively trying to bring about their version of the apocalypse, at a geopolitical scale, so that Jesus can rapture them all away.

... What are the Mormons? Oh, right, an extremist domestic terrorist religious cult, founded by a locally infamous conman, that just barely managed to not get snuffed out in its infancy of many clashes with Federal Forces and state militias, that's just managed to get a hell of a lot better at PR... while also continuing to evangelize and amass money and political power, and gaslight the fuck out if its adherents as to its actual history.

It really shouldn't be shocking at all that massive, culty religious organizations with opaque external financial reporting standards and essentially always also massive tax breaks/exceptions... do in fact worm their way into having massive power over the political apparatus.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Don't forget Scientology. They had members infiltrate the IRS all over the country, working from the inside to get tax-exempt status for them, cementing their identity as an official religion.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Oh god yes dear fucking lord.

I would say its astounding they haven't been banned, but they have a loooot of money, so, no, that makes perfect sense.

Yeah Scientology, is the most direct analogue to the insano cult shit in East Asia.

They stalk people, have probably assasinated people, imprison people in their little nonsense navy, buy entire city neighborhoods and all the local municipal politicians... got the insane alien religion, the fucking e meter cans things... entire thing is basically a massively gaslighty, manipulative and dangerous cult.

Most successful political assassination in recent memory. The shooter got everything he wanted and then some.

Inspiring, really.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How? He wasn't even in office any more.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago

Most assassinated politicians become lionized and turned into heroes, even if the reality did not convey that. For Shinzo, however, Japan basically collectively agreed that he was an asshole and his reputation was ruined. That rarely happens.

Imagine if the assassination attempt on Trump in 2024 was successful and then... not only does MAGA die immediately, but even the most die hard MAGA people immediately say 'yeah Trump was a dipshit anyway.'

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 7 points 3 days ago

She is still alive, though, and may have been avoiding taking to Trump by not knowing English all along!

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 57 points 3 days ago

To be fair, the Orange Shitgibbon barely speaks english itself.

[–] xia@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm not sure I would call it "petty"... :)

[–] Kennystillalive@feddit.org 19 points 3 days ago

Rest in Piss bozo

Back in his first term

[–] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 34 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Is it possible to learn this power?

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 36 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Anybody whose able to speak another language than english can do it.

But that does exclude a lot of americans.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

you don't even actually have to speak another language. just make shit up. babble like a fundie "speaking in tongues" and repeat "no speakey eni englche"... helps if you can go a little castor-eyed and pull out the crazed weirdo look.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (4 children)

But please don't try that with bilinguals. We may not understand you but we have plenty of experience knowing what a foreign language sounds like.

I've had two people pull that shit on me and all they did was lose my respect for thinking I'm that stupid.

That is the opposite of being petty.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago (3 children)

As an English speaking American, I would attempt the same thing.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

"This person doesn't speak ~~English~~ American, must be an illegal immigrant" -ICE

To be fair, she can get away with it, unlike, say, Queen Elizabeth II.

[–] kraftpudding@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago (1 children)

She gets away not talking to trump, mostly because she's dead.

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago

*pretending to be dead. Now we know the real reason she "died"

Why would she do that, she's married to a fascist

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I think Hitler would have hated Trump. Pretty sure he did end up hating Mussolini. Fascism isn't a big friendship club.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Hitler considered Italians to be racially inferior to even the French. Also there was little cooperation between the axis powers. They didn't share much technology and or industrial power. Unlike the allies who were far more cooperative.

For example many people make a big deal about Hitler's plan for nuclear weapons... but what no one talks about is Japan's nuclear program... and how much closer they got to making a functioning nuke. There was very little information sharing between Japan and Germany, however.

In terms of industry, the Italian air force often had decent airframes but poor engines. The Germans had excellent engines but didn't do much to help the Italians with their air force logistical issues.

Take this in comparison to the US which absolutely flooded its allies with everything from cutlery to explosives to fuel and everything in-between. The Soviet army was bolstered greatly by American trucks, jeeps, and heavy machinery that would have made winning the war incredibly difficult.

[–] Bloomcole@crazypeople.online 1 points 1 day ago

I bet this revisionism is what they teach Americans.
Only missing the "we liberated Europe and beat the nazis"

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I sometimes wonder why the European and Japanese fascists even allied.

I'm doing a hearts of iron 4 playthrough as germany and just said no when the option of allying with Japan came up. It's that alliance that ends up pulling the US into the war. This way I think Japan will have their own little war with the US and China while I fight it out with Britain and finish that up before even looking at the Soviets funny.

[–] Bloomcole@crazypeople.online 2 points 1 day ago

The US wanted war with Japan for economic reasons, violence is invariably their way of winning.
They entered war in Europe royally late when they knew the Soviets would win it.
And to prevent them from getting all of it.
