I understand what this meme conveys. It's great, swapping works. However if I read it mentally and imagine it's directed at me,... it feels good. I wish men got more compliments, cisgender or not

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 7 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

you are baller have a good day

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 5 points 4 weeks ago

I'd compliment men more if they weren't always creeps about it.

Id smile more in public if men took 'no' for an answer. As-is, they must be pre empted.

The reason men don't get compliments is other men. Sorry.

Not any different from all the times I’ve been told I’m really something or another for a woman

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 weeks ago

You are something or another regardless of your gender in my book.

Thanks! I'll take what I can get.

[–] Im_old@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

If that ever happen I would take it as the best compliment I've ever received 🫠

I don't know who you are, but could you please help me afford healthcare since you look like you have magic?

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

You'll have better luck asking for a magical pumpkin carriage ride to the king's gala.

I'm permabanned from Blahaj for saying, on another instance, that I don't believe in dragons.

[–] benignintervention@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oooohhhhh right, I forgot about that bit of Lemmy lore. Better to leave well enough alone then, eh

[–] Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

What? What? Please inform me of this Lemmy lore I'm hella confused

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

The long and short of it is that a certain poster insisted that their gender was 'dragonfucker', and that they fucked the gender of 'dragons'. For obvious reasons not everyone was onboard with this, but the Blahaj admins decided that it wasn't up for discussion. Unfortunately, they decided that what wasn't up for discussion was up to, and including, the very existence of dragons. That's the lore of it.

In an admittedly bitter conversation about the whole debacle several months later on another instance, the top Blahaj admin (who was not involved in the conversation) saw that I still denied the existence of dragons, and decided to permaban me from Blahaj for that terrible crime, notwithstanding that I hadn't even posted on Blahaj since the debacle in any case. That's the personal story.

@daggermoon@lemmy.world since you asked too.

I would also like to know

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 4 points 4 weeks ago

You monster!

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

I love emulating that post Malone gif of him resting his chin on the distal side of his interlocked fingers, and saying "bitch I'm adorable!" Cause even if I shave my head cause I went bald early, and am holding onto a patchy beard cause I don't wanna look like Gomer Pyle, I'm still pretty AF!

[–] ztwhixsemhwldvka@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Prejucide and sexism is okay when it's done from an LGBTQ perspective!

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 82 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The meme is satirizing that statement by swapping the usual 'compliment'.

[–] ztwhixsemhwldvka@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

Oh, I am unaware

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.ca 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

You're pretty smart for a woman etc for those wooshed.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Isn't this about "you look good for a trans man/woman"?

"You're smart for a woman" is just straight up sexist and demeaning, while the former "compliment", maybe not as flattering to some as the giver intends, does not imply any prejudice.

[–] Akagigahara@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The "for" part is what makes this a backhanded compliment. It heavily implies prejudice/preconceived notions, because there is no need to compare to the other group. While it might be a compliment directed at the person, it's implicity demeaning to the community you are getting compared to. It's not necessarily a firmly or consciously held believe, but it still shows what they are expecting.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I kinda see your point, but I think context is important here. For many trans people, part of transitioning includes working toward presenting as their identified gender, and that process can take time and effort. So when someone says "you look good for a trans man/woman", in a clumsy way, it might be meant as recognition of that effort, like saying, “you look exactly how you hoped to". Which is completely different from automatically assuming that all women are stupid for being women.

[–] Akagigahara@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I can see what you mean, but you still get reminded that you are trans/don't get clocked fully as the gender you're presenting as.

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 2 points 4 weeks ago

I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's definitely not as "backhanded" as the other one. In fact, that "compliment", especially in the context of the meme, implies they didn't realize the person is transgender until it was somehow pointed out explicitly, because of the whole "wow, you're trans?" part.

[–] Xoriff@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Doesn't it though? "You're pretty X for a Y" assume X people aren't Y naturally. Fill in the blanks for smart : woman :: attractive : trans

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

“Yeah, you’re pretty good lookin’, for a girl.”

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

"... But no homo, bro"

Me: ??????

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 2 points 4 weeks ago

Sorry that I neglected your comment, but my response to the neighboring comment applies here as well.
