Remember TX , climate change is a myth and you should worry about the scary immigrants instead of looking at your infrastructure.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 hours ago

imagine voting for trump and then he directly causes the death of your child

i guess at least we don't have DEI anymore... fucking /s

[–] heyWhatsay@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 hours ago

There will still be Texans that won't believe in climate change. Drill baby, drill, as they say

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Innocent people, mostly poor, were the victims. Politics and election results aside, this is awful and not the time to be gleefully vindictive.

[–] HiddenLychee@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

My mind has been so poisoned by the vindictiveness of US culture since 2016, that I genuinely read a headline like this and a big part of me is happy it's the other side that got hurt. Like wtf happened to me.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Is FEMA helping, or is the melting mango fart withholding money like he did for Sarah Huckasand's state? Maybe if Greg Abbott were a little hotter and let creepotus fondle his bussy he'd get some funding.

[–] nthavoc@lemmy.today 1 points 1 hour ago

FEMA's disbandment was postponed until after the hurricane season. I have no idea if they are going to help or not because it's been so damn wishy-washy with these idiots that people are literally dying now because of their extremely stupid decisions. Chip Roy, who is completely in favor of all of this chaos is now down there trying garner sympathy for his extremely poor choices and leadership. It's his district. He will get his sympathy because somehow this will be blamed on democrats, liberals, the woke, or all three. We also see Gravy Seal Supreme Dan Patrick in army cosplay for the occasion down there too.

This is a tragedy, and unfortunately the general sentiment I've seen online from trumpers is that "this is not natural" and "this was an intentional geoengineering attack by the democrats". MTG has already introduced a bill that:

prohibits the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity. It will be a felony offense.

Source: https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/marjorie-taylor-greene-introduces-bill-to-put-an-end-to-weather-modification/ar-AA1I2ynd

This is the worst timeline.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

That is a shit policy. That wording means that planes can't be used to pour fire retardants onto blazes, and likely many other useful practices that I don't know about.

[–] nthavoc@lemmy.today 1 points 1 hour ago

You can also flip it the other way and force chemical companies to completely stop dumping of anything into the air because their burning waste causes acid rain which has been scientifically proven and is known to alter weather negatively. I'm sure all of her petroleum constituents would love that.

[–] mberger@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Made worse by the hijacking of the Magic: The Gathering acronym by Marjorie Taylor Green.

[–] Gloomy@mander.xyz 2 points 5 hours ago

Wasn't that introduced to counter ideas about geoengineering against climate change?

Like solar engineering and stuff like that? It makes sense from the perspective of somebody who denies man-made climate change to not have people tamper with this.

I don't think the claim of this resent event beeing an geoengineering attack and the bill you refer too are connected. At least not as far as I understand it.

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 8 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

So the combined efforts of 8 billion people can't change the climate, but the democrat party can? Do they think it's full of supervillains or something? Oh fuck. They probably do, don't they?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

As a progressive, I would LOVE to have these mythical powers that Turdpublicans think me to have. Sadly, I can't turn off wildfires or make mosquitos stop sucking.

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Climate denial should be seen as the same as being a Nazi. People are actually being harmed and biomes are being destroyed.

[–] Beebabe@lemmy.world 9 points 11 hours ago

Their behavior is such a disservice to the victims. They simply couldn’t admit to being wrong about climate change. It’s painfully disingenuous. And will create more victims in the future as magical thinking and conspiratorial voices are elevated

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 11 points 12 hours ago

the Guadalupe River had risen about 26 feet in 45 minutes.

Goddamn...

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

I’m sure the cuts at NOAA and NWS didn’t have anything to do with worsening the tragedy.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 37 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

I do feel bad for anyone who was affected by this who did not support Trump and his dismantling of the weather services that could have prevented this.

However, for anyone who was affected who voted for Trump and supported his dismantling of said programs? Fuck around, find out.

[–] its_prolly_fine@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Don't think the children voted for Tump.

And literally the first sentence in my comment addressed that chucklefuck you're not being clever you're just being a gotcha-seeking asshole.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 26 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

Unfortunately, even with better forecasting, it wouldn't have been possible to predict exactly how much rain was going to fall or where in a storm like this, but just two days before all this started, they were literally predicting sunshine this weekend in Central Texas.

There's a huge element of randomness in this kind of storm, where one area gets 15+" of rain while 30 miles away they only get 3", but a warning that excessive localized rainfall was a possibility would've been helpful.

I also blame the local government. Central Texas is flash flood central due to our geography, and all local governments should have emergency preparedness plans to send out push notifications to people in their areas. This all went down in the middle of the night and happened so fast that the local government got caught totally off guard though

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

Silly human, push notifications are for hunting cop killers, not saving lives from floods!

/s.

[–] madlian@lemmy.cafe 7 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The federal government has been dismantling weather systems left and right. Those systems could have given valuable minutes of warning. Flash floods do happen, but even 10 minutes of warning can pretty much save everyone.

The reason they did not have this warning is because of Donald Trump, And then after him every single republican politician.

The federal government has been dismantling weather systems left and right. Those systems could have given valuable minutes of warning. Flash floods do happen, but even 10 minutes of warning can pretty much save everyone.

All this is true

The reason they did not have this warning is because of Donald Trump. And then after him every single republican politician.

This is not clear. What does a warning from the NWS look like? Because they issued them:

At 4:06 a.m. the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio posted on X: "A very dangerous flash flooding event is ongoing." It ended: "Turn Around, Don't Drown!"

Then, at 5:15 a.m. the National Weather Service San Angelo posted on X that there was a flash flood emergency. The Austin/San Antonio office posted on its X account about the emergency at 5:23 a.m. This type of alert is "exceedingly rare" and used when there is a "severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage," according to the National Weather Service.

But how does this message get to people who are asleep? The best answer is the Wireless Emergency Alert system. I haven't seen any information one way or the other indicating whether this system was activated in a timely manner. If it wasn't, that was a serious mistake that costed lives.

Let me be clear that cuts to the NWS are going to end up costing lives. There is no doubt about that. But I think it's important to understand the reality of a situation rather than reflexively blaming Trump

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 21 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

I agree with your points but it is extremely frustrating that they also are killing the science to try and have better predictions and not even bothering with managing climate change which will make these kind of events more frequent and more devastating. I am sure you already know but it is so damn frustrating. People are dying and it only is going to get worse.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 6 points 16 hours ago

I very much agree

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 8 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

fascist govt will do nothing to help, blame it all on brown people, and call it a day.

then maga will say "mexicans did this to us!!" and increase their hate further

it sounds stupid and absurd, and it is.

welcome to amerikkka

At least 43 fatalities have been reported so far, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said at a news conference Saturday evening. The dead include 28 adults and 15 children. Twelve of the adults and five children are unidentified, Leitha said. At least 27 campers were missing, Dalton Rice, Kerryville city manager, said.

This is such a tragedy, so many of the dead and missing are kids.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Global climate change is a HOOOOOCKSE!

[–] Hobbes@startrek.website -4 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

You get what you vote for.

[–] brewbart@feddit.org 1 points 2 hours ago

The tragedy is that most of the time, the vast majority of people who vote for that shit doesn't suffer the consequences immediately or at all.

[–] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Kids can't vote. You are one degree away from advocating collective punishment.
