Chuck Mangione, noted flugelhorn player, trumpeter and composer, has died. He was reportedly 84.

The news was confirmed via a press release out of a funeral home in Rochester, New York, on behalf of Mangione’s family, who said they were “deeply saddened to share that Chuck peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in Rochester” on Tuesday.

Mangione, a flugelhorn player whose composition “Feels So Good” became an unlikely pop hit in 1978, was a Rochester native who started playing jazz as a teenager,

He won two Grammy Awards over his 60-year career in music, including one for best instrumental composition for “Bellavia.”

“Feels So Good,” an upbeat instrumental whose full-length version runs nearly 10 minutes, spent 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #4 in 1978.

In addition to that signature hit, Mangione was recognizable for his distinctive style at the peak of his career, sporting long hair and a brown felt hat with a feathered band that he later donated to the Smithsonian Institution.

Outside of the music business, Mangione is remembered for his recurring appearances as a tongue-in-cheek version of himself on the primetime Fox animated series “King of the Hill.”

RIP and him dying and Jonathan Joss getting murdered puts a damper on the KOTH relaunch, but I imagine both will be memorialized in some way on it.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

KOTH in general is starting to feel a bit cursed.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I dont know why this was so funny to me, like chuck mangione was just found by a river as a baby and there's a great debate about his true age

I don't know if you remember or saw, but when Rachael Lillis – a voice actress who played Misty from Pokémon among others – died last year, news outlets went wild baselessly saying she was 46 until both the NYT and CBC News actually contacted her family and confirmed she was 55. Unless the outlet did their own fact-checking of the age, I think qualifying with "reportedly" is responsible journalism.

Yes, both these things are true. It is both a funny thing to say, but also a forced thing to say. How free we are.

[–] Auntievenim@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

This is how I find out misty died?????

[–] Lighttrails@sh.itjust.works 25 points 3 days ago

This song was EVERYWHERE. For whatever reason my main memory attached to this song is of an RV show at The Cow Palace in South San Francisco. I was there with my parents who were looking for a new trailer.

The soundtrack in heaven just got a lot more dope.

One of the most well-known Rochestarians. I should get some Genny Cream Ale to pour out in his honor.

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

pour one out for me, too. just watched Megalo Dale in his honor.

Glad I got a chance to see him & work with him before he passed. My brother turned me on Feels So Good when I was a wee one. Got to mix for him many years later.
