"what breed is your cat?"

"he's a stupid asshole is what he is, i love him"

[–] Seraph@kbin.social 71 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The single brain cell variety.

[–] Sheeple@lemmy.world 43 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (10 children)

Fun fact. The reason orange cats are dumb is actually not inherent to it being orange!

Turns out it's just that male cats are MUCH more stupid than female cats and orange as a color just so happens to be tied to genes that are unlikely to emerge in female cats.

That means orange cats are more likely to be male, which makes them stupid.

The 19% of orange cats that are female, behave perfectly normal

[–] seaQueue@lemmy.world 42 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Our striped cat begs to disagree, she's about as intelligent as an angry bag of rocks.

[–] intelati@programming.dev 12 points 2 years ago

Imagine if she was a him!

[–] napoleonsdumbcousin@feddit.de 41 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I spent the last half an hour trying to find anything related to different intelligence levels of male and female cats.

I did not find anything.

Male cats tend to be more playful and affectionate, but there is no difference in intelligence.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 30 points 2 years ago

Incorrect. Orange cats are dumb because they're stuffed so full of love that there's almost no more room for braincells.

[–] OnkelCannabia@lemmy.world 27 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Don't spread false information. Yes orange cats are more likely to be male. No, orange cats are not less intelligent. I've just researched it.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago

As a fact? No, orange cats are not less intelligent.

Orange cats just have a single brain cell, and honestly it's pretty impressive what they can do with that.

[–] zepheriths@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Male cat are more likely to engage in risky actions though. Male cats will attempt to jump to a further ledge than females will. We don't know why this is entirely

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Don't most mammals have males taking greater risks?

[–] GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Wasn't there a subdeddit called "whywomenlivelonger" full of nothing but the stupid dangerous shit that us men do?

[–] zepheriths@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Unclear. Especially in female dominant mammals it is not known

[–] Retrograde@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

Add this to the list of questions to eventually ask the aliens

[–] SeducingCamel@lemm.ee 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My absolute stupid idiot orange girl disagrees

[–] AClassyGentleman@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (6 children)

Smae. Some of it is probably learned from her goofball idiot caretaker, but I'm just gonna say one of us has lost a fight with the ceiling and it wasn't me.

Edit: this made me realize I've never actually tried to fight the ceiling. Hold on gotta test, will report back.

[–] sleep_deprived@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

I've heard of lots of people that have won against the ceiling. The trick is to go from the attic and just jump down onto it!

Gonna need a citation on that claim about male cats being less intelligent

[–] smellythief@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

That's not fun, or a fact.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

I have an orange cat in the family and I can confirm both that he's stupid and he's male.

We, however, have several other male cats, they're not all as dumb as our orange boy.... but they're also not orange, soooo. 🤷‍♂️

In my experience it's the orange and white ones you need to watch out for. Orange ones seem to be dumb but dopey, white cats are full of evil chaos but orange and white ones seem to get the chaos part and the dumb part. Just pure undirected non-stop dumb energy lol.

My White Calico wanted to be the lapthing of a Bond villain. I did the best I could.

My cat's breeds are whatever breed of cat you find in dumpsters and car engines 🙃

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Standard American Shorthair.

Bonus points if it's a foundling or feral you just fed until it adopted you.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 14 points 2 years ago (2 children)

a foundling

The shapeshifters from DS9?

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 years ago

Damn, FromSoft skipped right over DS 4-8 to go straight for DS9. How is it?

I'm among the many who have a Standard Issue Cat.

[–] Misconduct@startrek.website 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The common dumpster cat, if you will 🧐

[–] doingthestuff@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago

Yeah we found ours as an older kitten living in the wall of our detached garage, she was pretty feral. It might as well have been a dumpster. Ten years later she's a sweetheart. But she's addicted to catnip treats. I'm an enabler.

jokes on you I have no idea what breed my rescue is, he is the cutest and bestest boi in the world though.

There's something wrong with your cat's face but I think they're cute

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

Looks like a very gentle best boi

[–] CoderKat@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago

I think that breed is known as "cutie".

I am no dog owner but who the hell would think thats a husky

[–] siberianlaika@lemm.ee 12 points 2 years ago

You'd be surprised how many people call all wolf-ish primitive breeds 'huskies'. Everyone in my neighbourhood thinks my dog (profile pic) is a Siberian husky, though it's more understandable since she's a related Siberian breed.

[–] Kovari@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 years ago

I've had someone ask me if my corgi was a husky before. Um. No??

Why would a cat's servant care about the breed?

[–] ssfckdt@mastodon.cloud 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

To know how best to address their majesty

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 2 years ago

Peasants don't need to know the name of the reigning dynasty they only need to know who's in charge.

[–] ssfckdt@mastodon.cloud 24 points 2 years ago (9 children)

The only breeds people mention are ones that are notoriously annoying. Persian, Siamese, Sphinx.

Everything else is based on appearance... tabby, calico, mackerel, "maine coon" (which is often used to describe cats that *aren't* maine coon)

[–] zepheriths@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Persians are well known for being one of the more friendly breeds. I can't confirm because my family doesn't believe in getting pure breeds

[–] Nepenthe@kbin.social 5 points 2 years ago

You forgot tortoiseshell, which is both famously prissy and named after a pattern

What breed is that? Garfield

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Isn't that a Samoyed? Or Sammy, or smiling Sam?
