This, but also isn't that how genetics works? You're not going to see a native Chihuahua thriving in the arctic.

(But it's probably something about what countries actually do testing, etc. )

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip -1 points 3 days ago

Well when you look at Europe you see that the countries that make up the majority of the countries that colonized America have the higher autism rates too

[–] Zkuld@lemmy.world 52 points 4 days ago

This reminds me of how we beat covid by not testing for it anymore

Tell me you don't understand sample selection bias without saying you don't understand sample selection bias.

[–] Nighed@feddit.uk 5 points 4 days ago

I think that's the point

It's time to introduce everyone to the concept of Culture bound syndrome

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 8 points 4 days ago

Good link, thx.

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

My favorite part:

Some culture-bound syndromes appear with similar features in several cultures, but with locally specific traits, such as penis panics.

New Zealand very smart, just skip Autism altogether.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Many diseases seem to not exist in New Zealand.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

They banned them. You want to fix a problem? ban it.

[–] Denjin@feddit.uk 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Obviously it's because people in Africa and south America don't have access to paracetamol.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 7 points 4 days ago

Acet....achet....ackt.see.tomofin....better known as tylenol THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

[–] bonedaddy@mander.xyz 10 points 4 days ago

I for one upvoted this post because it is stupid.

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago (3 children)

damn sorry for downvotes OP, I thought it was pretty funny

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Poe's Law. Without a clear indicator, a lot of people took it as OP believing this.

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

OP added the description after like an hour, people have kept downvoting after it was added

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 9 points 4 days ago

Tough crowd. ヘ(^_^)

Yeah if this instance is going to become a place to post disinformation, I’m out. I came here to escape reddit, not double down on its worst aspects.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 29 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's a place to deconstruct disinformation. Discussing why things are wrong can be more important than just facts.

Calm down, you're in a memes channel, and OP here posts science memes all the time. I'm very sure this is satirical

[–] AugustWest@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago

If you block OP, you have basically left the community, as OP is this community. Either way, I’m fairly certain OP is posting this as in “look at how dumb this is.” It’s a science memes community.

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Like the idiots who don’t understand sarcasm?

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Sarcasm no worky worky on internet. Therefore we invent emoji. 🔏

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Let's play Pick the Cognitive Biases. Not just in the picture, but in the comments and the reasons people downvoted this.

If you see this comment, it could be interesting to get an idea of how many people:

a) Thought OP posted this in like a "Look at how dumb this is" way, or,

b) Thought OP agreed with the idea presented in the image.

I think this might have to do with communication climates (I am so far from an expert in anything) and how a climate of disagreement with peers and prevalent media can affect how a message is received. In other words, if surrounded by stupid people with stupid ideas it's easy to assume the next stupid idea has come from a stupid person.

Tylenol is just really popular in the US

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

The US should just switch to paracetamol. Problem solved!

this is what happens when you discard the confidence data
