One week into the government shutdown, top Republican leaders appear to have lost the plot.

President Donald Trump, Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are straining to project a united front against Democrats, just barely concealing tensions over strategy that have snowballed behind the scenes since agencies closed last week.

Johnson praised the president for making “very clear that, yes, he’s happy to sit down and talk to Democrats about health care or anything as soon as they reopen the government.”

I think perhaps it should be made clear that Democrats know very well that he will not, in fact, do that if the government reopens.

My bet is the shutdown just stays shut down

I agree. I think it has more to do with seating that new representative who has promised to be the final vote releasing the Epstein files.

[–] PoundCake2@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This IS the reason.

Where are those Epstein files…

[–] whiwake@lemmy.cafe 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, I think the reason is so he can disconnect enough of the government that it’s easy to use the insurrection act, which will lead to martial law—and then full control of the country. I think that’s one of the things that was discussed with the generals at the meeting recently.

He already functionally has full control of the country since there are no checks against him. Him getting a stamp of approval to ignore the rule of law doesn't change anything except giving his lawyers more time to golf instead of pushing court papers.

The real fight here is over optics. He's very visibly cannibalising and deconstructing the federal government and forcing constitutional crisis by marching ICE/National Guard around peaceful streets. When he has his shiny insurrection papers he can now march out the military as well, which is the only way he can exert real political control. Stochastic terrorism and 20k ICE thugs can't occupy a nation of 340 million.

But the thing is the military isn't ICE. They didn't sign up to wander around Chicago arresting maids and line cooks. They need a real, genuine, convincing reichstag fire or armed opposition to keep those soldiers from wondering why they're patrolling the streets and shooting dissidents for the emperor with no clothes. If you can't convince them to be fully on board the maga train then it gets very difficult to hold your kangaroo court to purge the left. That is going to be much more interesting than any phony act or simple declaration of martial law.

I think you overestimate the United States military. It’s a nice thought to think that they would be the ones to finally draw the line, but they are not going to do that. Every single one of them is a bent over baby killing bitch who has not done a thing for this country in decades. They are going to fall in line without question and have no problem slaughtering their own kind.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Don't get me wrong, they signed up to ooh-rah bomb brown people. But it hits a little different when, statistically, a portion of them are literally from these cities. There's an insular camaraderie in the military and they're pulled from a diverse background by design. You can't just drop a battalion on a city and expect them to behave themselves like a Texas National Guard in Oregon.

I'm also not claiming this is a good thing. A military junta doesn't make for kind and benevolent rulers, but wouldn't be bad in the same ways as the current administration.

[–] whiwake@lemmy.cafe 1 points 4 days ago

Sure they will. They put the people who hate the right people in the right spots. Gimme a tank and let me run through the Bible Belt… and they might just have my support.

I mean, I think it's pretty tightly bounded by when airports shut down. If all planes are grounded for any length of time, that's an economic collapse kinda no matter what you do.

Plus with the holidays coming up? No, I think they are gonna panic when the air traffic controllers start walking out en masse cause they're not getting paid.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Especially with trump saying no back pay. That's not going to go down well.

[–] whiwake@lemmy.cafe 7 points 4 days ago

I think airport controllers are going to walk out… and that’s just the end of it. It’s project 2025. The end of the year is total control. Basically martial law by the end of the year is my bet.

"Everyone knows you have to give up your leverage before negotiating in order to successfully negotiate. As long as the Democrats give us everything we want we can then come to the table and negotiate."

Weeks later:

"Listen, sometimes a negotiation ends with one party simply saying no. That's how this negotiation went. We say no to the Democrats far left Venezuela communism socialist Mao Stalin Antifa demands."

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Trump's concept of a deal in action ... deal is he has to win, the other side just lose, always ...

So, he has a few things he wants in his hands, healthcare and a looming insurrection act (he secretly wants this, it brings full control), the democrats hold a vote of the epstein files and a plain budgetary block ... and Trump can not allow the other side to get them, meaning the preferred action is to keep things in a stalemate as long as he can.

I do not expect this to be resolved quickly, if it suddenly does happen there was external pressure from a side that Trump needs to listen to...

I think Putin likes this just the way it is.

“The Administration will not negotiate while the American people are being held hostage by Democrats,” she added. (White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson) - Liars and Crooks

That's not how cucking works. Fuck their wives instead.

[–] Nomad 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They would enjoy that. Make them dick their own wife.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah, I do not choose those guys' wives.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

Trump can't even bring peace to the american people so I doubt some blather about uniting Palestine and Israel will get him that Peace prize he so desperately desires.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Ah the ol' "disarray" headline eh, Politico?

Getting desperate for those shutdown clicks are ya?

[–] demizerone@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That poor gay man. May he eventually find piece to be who he is on the inside instead of making others suffer by taking away their healthcare.
