What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in unrelated arguments.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting or manipulating the post in any way, this includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be permanently banned.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

Yeah, not a big fan of tankies and personally would have never considered donating. Pretty sure I blocked that popup with ublock.

That was until I saw your self-righteous little crusade ...

So thanks for supporting lemmy!

Never have never will, enjoy supporting death and authoritarianism.

[–] garth@sh.itjust.works 20 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

This is not a lemmy.world issue. All Lemmy instances do this, assuming they're running up-to-date builds. The devs added it to the Lemmy code base earlier this year:
https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/5318

If you don't like it, then move to a PieFed or mbin instance. Then you have access to all the same content without any connection to dessalines or nutomic.

OP is quite bad at putting their thoughts into words, but OP switching to piefed does not solve the problem. the problem is not that OP sees it, but that everybody else sees it too, and it incentivizes donating to people with bad intentions

The lemmy.world admins also run a PieFed instance, if you specifically want the lemmy.world admin team but want to use PieFed instead of Lemmy.

They are indeed already on a Piefed instance. Feddit Online is such.

The Lemmy instance that I host also has this pop up because it's built into Lemmy. Am I a bad guy too?

Yep this ran last year as well if I remember correctly.

See the body of the post, when asked about this Serinus said:

So they’ve provided you a solution to your problem, but you don’t want to use it to solve your problem, and you’re mad at them because you’re still using the thing you don’t want to use.

Got it.

That's not an "oops, sorry, out of our control" instead that's a glowing review. Do you share the same opinion as them?

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Are you sure you want to die on this hill? It's a silly pop up. Don't use Lemmy -- done.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 15 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

How is that comment you linked to "the admins intentionally supporting the tankie views of the developers"?

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

Maybe OP misunderstood the "focus on human connections" part.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -4 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Supporting those specific developers is supporting their Tankie views, their transphobic views, and their pro-war views. They could have said "sorry yeah we didn't mean to promote them" but instead they defended promoting them and basically thanked them.

[–] asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 9 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

Uhm yeah no.

That popup is built into Lemmy. It pops up about every year or so. And iirc you should also be able to disable it permanently.

edit: nope, you can't disable it. they removed the option

Somehow Lemmy isn't as defederated as i thought?

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 0 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

absolutely ML should be defederated for misinformation and admin abuse

supporting the lemmy project is totally fine

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 5 hours ago

"I wouldn't support ML but I'm fine with supporting ML" you're not slick.
