Its silver. I do not have it near me to look at the model. Holds up well! All my floppies are readable still.

This is nice. I should do the same thing. I'm not sure where some of my cameras even are though. And many of them are film, not digital.

A lot of vintage digital gear. Are you over on the other place too?

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

im only here cuz im banned from the other red place lol

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lol I came here after the third party apps thing. Sadly the other place is still better for stuff like photography imo just because it's that much more active.

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

yeah... theres no dedicated place for mavicas :(.

On the newer Sony cameras: do the "floor model stickers" (the ones that advertise capabilities) contribute to the item's collect-ability at all? Back in the day, I always removed those since they kind of alter the device's aesthetic and they're clearly not intended to keep.

i think it does. i just like to get ones with stickers on them because without them having stickers they just look naked.

That is a lot of Mavicas!

Do they all still work?

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yep! i love using them whenever i get the chance to. i get novelty film cameras just to display as you can see but if i get a digital camera, they have to work.

I remember using a floppy Mavica about 25 years ago, borrowed from my school...

My first digital camera was a Fujifilm iX-1, didn't take a lot of photos with it, but it was interesting...

Later I bought myself a Canon EOS 400D, that was my first proper digital camera, I still have plenty of photos taken with it in my collection.

Ten years later, I got the camera that probably influenced me the most, a Panasonic Lumix GX80, a brilliant little camera with TERRIBLE ergonomics. I carried that with me every single day, I learned a LOT about photography with it, one of the control dials broke a few years after buying it, but I kept it going by swapping apature/shutter speed between the dials depending on what I needed.

In 2023, I got a bonus from work, and I had a very fun and interesting lunch at Scandinavian Photo in Stockholm, I had a list and got myself a Panasonic S5 with a 20-60mm kit lens, a 50mm prime lens, a proper backpack, a peakdesign camera strap, two SD cards and probably something more that I have forgotten. It was a super fun experience getting to treat a camera store kinda like a supermarket with a personal shopper.

In the next months, I bought a Sigma contemporary 100-400mm lens, a used, but amazing, Lumix 24-105mm f/4 lens (I need to service this lens, the AF seems to me broken), some lights and an external flash.

The S5 is a fantastic camera, with one big flaw, the AF is slow.

I enjoy planespotting and have started saving up for a Sony A7 III or IV and a 600mm lens ahead of the Swedish Air Force centennial celebration in August....

I am an IT guy with a photo hobby...

I don't know exactly, it may have been the FD-81 or FD-75

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

the fd81 is very pretty, the prettiest only second to the fd7

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I never considered the styling of the cameras at the time, but I did when I picked my S5, I really like the styling of it!

Just a reminder, I think dpreview has a big backlog of gorgeous product photos going back a long, long way, if you are luck they might have some good photos of the Mavicas

Look at you big ballin with RAM just sitting around

J/k nice variety of Mavicas!

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

what can i say, the ram stick was just sitting there in a mother board in some display case in an it classroom. when no one was looking it just happened to fly into my pocket (because of the wind ofc)

[–] colourlesspony@pawb.social 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Very nice! I've been so temped to buy that lego slr camera for years now. Those old sony floppy disk cameras are fun.

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

you should 100% get a sony mavica. all my mavicas apart from 1 i got as untested and they work perfectly and i got them all for under 30 quid each.

[–] Atherel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nice collection! And what cam did you use to take that picture?

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My Google pixel 7 lol

[–] GenosseFlosse@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

I had an early digital camera (Sony? Casio?) that could send pictures via infrared. With a Nokia 9110 you could then send a (badly) grey scaled picture via fax.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Gorgeous collection! Also, is that a Kane & Lynch comic book?

[–] helimopp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yesss. Kane and lynch 2 is a peak game
