The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

In 2021, Anderson described it as "one of the most insane files I ever had to work on"

Also check out the linked gallery showing the WIP versions of the wallpaper!

I enjoy that the windows 10 default background was a composite photograph, not CG.

Holy effort Batman! 30+ people and “Over 3000 images in roughly 9K resolution were captured using a Phase One camera system” used in the production of that one image.

Because sometimes its better to not ask if you can or should and instead try. It was obviously popular enough that it still has a soft spot in many tech enthusiasts' minds. And arguably its the element of any OS that you encounter the most. Going from your home computer to even just a computer at the public library, one thing was almost guaranteed to be the same and that's the desktop background. So why not make it really high quality? They had no idea how far resolution would come and what would end up being sufficient, but because of their decision, even now people seek out that image for their desktops.

Well If you think about it. The latest release of Win 7 happened on 08. Feb 2023. 8k Screens are a thing at that point.

The pixel count of this resolution is 72.900.000 pixels. A 8k Screen has around 33 Million Pixels. They were not far off with their estimation.

The version featured in Windows 7 Starter was also made by Chuck Anderson and Erik Attkisson, but features a heavily simplified appearance compared to the original; it features fewer blades of grass and lines, while the Windows logo is simply a white-light blue radial gradient as opposed to being colorful.

It also served as Starter's only wallpaper, and unlike previous Starter SKUs of Windows, it cannot be changed due to internal product policy restrictions.

Imagine using an operating system that treats you as a hostage on your own PC because you gave the company money, but not enough money

There are fewer blades of grass because you're even less free

If ever there was a better "grass is greener" metaphor I don't know it.

There are some really interesting articles! The Autumn wallpaper from Windows XP had people trying to figure out its origins.

It looks like one of the posters for "When Harry met Sally"

I really like the win7 beta background (with the betta fish):

Seems excessive even for high budget films, billboard's or government surveillance satellites.
