Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The Army will now allow recruits to enlist up to age 42 and has removed a waiver requirement for those with a marijuana-related conviction.

Oh thank god I turn 43 next month…really dodged the bullet or draft on that one…

[–] Jaegeras@piefed.social 1 points 16 minutes ago

Watch them raise the age again, now it'll probably be up to 55!

I thought I dodged the bullet myself when I learned it was previously up to 35.

"If you're not with us, then you'll die for us and we'll make sure of it!" Their motto, probably.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 9 points 1 hour ago

I hope they try and draft my ass. There is no way in hell I'll ever fight for this country again. Been there done that, don't recommend.

Why did Trump get rid of all of that DEI stuff again? Wasn't the claim that it was lowering our standards? So, if that's true, then getting rid of DEI should mean we can meet our hiring quotas while still maintaining high standards, right?

Because if they get rid of DEI and they still had to lower hiring standards for the military, just as they also recently did for the DOJ, then that's pretty conclusive evidence that their objections to DEI were completely about bigotry and not about the competency of the candidates.

oh shit we're going to get drafted aren't we

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 46 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

A draft would be a civil war, especially if they set it at 42.

Nobody would fucking go, and we'd see ICE agents used to round up anyone "military aged" starting in poverty striken neighborhoods and eventually expanding.

trump's dumb enough to try it tho, so we're probably gonna find out.

[–] amateurcrastinator@lemmy.world 1 points 25 minutes ago

They will give you some free shit and people will flock like sheep. Or they will just snatch you off the street and instead of aligator Alcatraz it will be boot camp

[–] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago

You know that at very least Hegseth has been walking around with a half chub at the thought of reinstating the draft. We're talking about invading multiple countries at any given time. All of the strong man dictators that Trump admires are in countries with compulsory military service. Then there's the timing of the announcement that Barron is ineligible to serve because he's too tall or some shit, the press secretary refusing to rule out a draft, and now this. I think they are seriously contemplating the possibility of a mandatory draft in the future.

[–] Dionysus@leminal.space 1 points 56 minutes ago

Huh, so their logic is draft me, give me a gun, teach me to shoot, and throw a military parade birthday party.

This is going to be one for the books.

[–] cranakis@reddthat.com 37 points 2 hours ago

I think I'll go fight for the Canadians in the coming war.

[–] Jaegeras@piefed.social 19 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Currently, it's still voluntary, thankfully.

But, I wouldn't be sure considering who we're dealing with.

[–] JamieDub86@piefed.social 10 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Voluntary but you cant say no.

[–] kata1yst@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 hour ago

Because of the implication.

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 11 points 2 hours ago

MP's looking to enforce a draft will need to wear flak vests. The whole thing, including the bits and bobs that infantrymen typically throw away to save weight.

It's okay, just made a not so subtle reference to fragging. You might be locked up but you won't be murdering some innocent child who was born the wrong color!

That's my plan at least. Lol but the exasperated kind of lol not like a haha yknow

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 14 minutes ago

The issue with assuming you can use fragging as an option is how it assumes you'll be near anyone that deserves a fragging. You'll likely be grouped with other drafties.

There was a Vietnam era strategy where enlisting decreased one's chances of being sent to Vietnam.

Could always go with the classic:

T-Squared's Halo tips that will have you fragging like a pro.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

I think you just have to grow a beard and Hegseth will be so offended/jealous he’ll discharge you

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'm all for the draft on one very strict condition; it has to be truly random with no way for rich kids to get mommy and daddy to buy them out of it or into a cushy assignment. When the rich kids have an equal chance of dying in oil wars, there won't be so many oil wars.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That's a terrible solution to the current problem.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 1 points 13 minutes ago* (last edited 10 minutes ago)

I wasn't really offering it as a solution to the current problem. I'm just saying that I don't believe the current problem would exist if, for the past 10 years or more, rich kids were candidate fodder for the meat grinder.

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 32 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

I can't, my bone spurs hurt.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 2 points 48 minutes ago

I know someone who is non reenlistable because they got drunk and did a bit of surprise cocaine the day before a surprise piss test. Wonder if they’ll ease the cocaine restriction too.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 20 points 2 hours ago

Is your daddy rich? No? Off to the front with you!

[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 16 points 2 hours ago

Bring out your morons!

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Does he think we're Russia? I don't think the American military has the same problems as the Russian one (besides an absolute monster at the very top)

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 13 points 2 hours ago

just wait til they start throwing people at the meat grinder which is Iran. invading that place would be complete insanity.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago

The waiver was rubber stamps anyways.

They give them out for almost anything, I knew a guy that got one for being forced into being a child soldier in South America before coming to America and joining our military.

And he was already out of bootcamp by the time he got the waiver because his recruiter told him not to mention it to anyone till after lol.
