"Don't abuse the animals too much! Just up to 100kg pls 🙏"

Real saints 😒

Greece doesn't use pounds.

Is this an April Fool’s joke that I’m late to? This makes me far too happy to be true.

I'm over 120kg and fully support not making animals carry me. I grew up in farm country and have no problem with using animals for work. I also hate the culture of throwing away animals when they stop making money for a company. Like any worker they deserve to be treated well, compensated appropriately, and allowed to retire with dignity and care.

NGL a mule would probably be able to carry me without harming it, but, like my username's inspiration, I'm one of nature's pedestrians. Never trust an animal that looks at you with its teeth

This is deeply americanphobic, what next they'll ban red 40 and microplastics >:c

If they cared about animal rights, they'd ban donkey rides entirely. They do it because a sick or dead donkey doesn't generate profits. It's all about money. Despicable.

Donkeys are incredibly robust animals. 100kg is nothing for them. A horse is more fragile than a donkey.

And yet if you watch the donkeys in action, they all seem stressed and scared. I agree with the OC, it is a despicable thing to watch. And I'm not even a vegetarian, just an observant person.

Unless you've worked with donkeys or are Doctor Dolittle you are projecting your feelings onto an animal.

Don't feel bad, projection is natural. For instance people think my cat loves on them, but I know he's a narcissistic asshole that only wants chin rubs and food, and couldn't care less if someone dies if he can get those things. And when he can't he shits on the carpet.

Some animals hate working, some enjoy it, some pine for it when they are retired. I don't know where I was going with this comment, but I did want you to know that my cat is a little shit and I love him

I'm not denying the animals can be stressed, scared or both at the same time.

Physically, 100kg is nothing for them to carry. The creatures are extremely sturdy and strong.

But do I doubt bad people abuse the animals? No. The problems start with the tourists. Most people can't understand or notice when an animal is not feeling fine with what is happening. But if a tourist is willing to pay whatever may be asked to experience a "genuine" local practice, it is prone to be colonized by people that do not care for the wellfare of the animals.

I guess to me the weight is not likely the issue. It's the fact that they're being forced to do a repetitive task around and for people they don't know or trust and get whipped for every little undesirable action.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

But the guide book says the donkeys are a must see!

Claims outrage is growing

Provides literally zero evidence or examples of outrage

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Outrage grows because they ban people, or the animal cruelty part?

[–] webp@mander.xyz 27 points 1 day ago

You can't just ban people from being cruel, it's inhumane!

It's a bit discriminating not allowing Americans to ride the donkeys

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The American people have spoken, they prefer elephants.

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

But do the elephants prefer them in return?

Me(looking at my belly): I suppose that I am below 100 kg. But who knows...
