Israel yet again violating another ceasefire.

Cue Republicans and Dems alike blaming Iran for it

Is this how I learn about this? Is it actually closed again?

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 32 points 2 hours ago

Israel didn’t want to stop bombing Libanon, so Iran keep the strait closed until they stop.

It’s glaringly obvious that Israel is just there to sabotage every diplomatic avenue the US might take.

And the US is basically getting cuckolded as Israel gets everything it wants and the US just impotently watches and pays for it all.

There’s really no excuse for Israel to be doing this, and they also assassinated negotiators earlier. They really do not want any peace treaty or the US to pull out.

The Iranians know that Trump cannot actually guarantee that Israel will stop doing anything, that Trump has no realistic ability to force Israel to stop, due to basically lets say, his ties to Israeli intelligence cough cough, and his domestic political situation.

... What they almost certainly actually want from the US is a withdrawal from region, cessation between US+GCC<->Iran hostilities, some kind of recognition of some kind of Hormuz tolling set up (they want that as a UN resolution, revenue split with Oman, the idea is the toll would replace demands for reparation payments), and something approximating a pledge of neutrality from the US in the ongoing exchanges between Iran and Israel.

They want the US to effectively bow out and also admit that the Israelis are insane and the US is impotent to stop/control them.

They will of course act outraged and surprised that the US, under Republicans, cannot actually stop its rabid ally... but they obviously already know that to be the case.

The Iranians are literally the most rational actor in this conflict.

They want to essentially be the new ones to cuck the US.

They do that... petrodollar ain't lookin so hot now is it?

Anyway, its important to remember that both the US and Iran have stated that they've agreed to an outline for negotiating a solid, actual deal, with a 14 day ceasefire for those negotiations to actually take place.

Nobody has actually, technically, said that anything other than 'lets stop shooting each other for 14 days and hammer out a deal.'

But, because this is being so heavily propogandized by... basically everyone involved... a whole lot of people are not actually reading what people have actually said.

Apparently its very difficult in the Twitter era, for people to comprehend a complex, conditional, nuanced statement.

Hooray for media literacy, which is downstream of just literal literacy.

My read on the situation:

  • Iran said "We will stop attacking if US and Israel stop attacking and considers our plan"
  • USA said "We will stop attacking, not go through with our genocidal war crime threat, and remove the time pressure we put on ourselves"
  • Israel said "We will keep doing our extermination and colonization campaign in Lebanon on the side while you two talk, surely that doesn't count as attacking"

https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/full-text-iran-national-security-council-statement-ceasefire

...

In this regard, and according to the prudence of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei (May God protect him), and the approval of the Supreme National Security Council—and considering Iran and the Resistance’s upper hand in the battlefield, the enemy’s inability to carry out its threats despite all claims, and the formal acceptance of all the rightful demands of the Iranian people—it was decided that negotiations be held in Islamabad to finalise the details. This is so that within a maximum of 15 days, with the finalisation of details, Iran’s victory on the field shall also be consolidated in political negotiations.

...

Now, the honourable Prime Minister of Pakistan has informed Iran that the American side, despite all outward threats, has accepted these principles as the basis for negotiations and has surrendered to the will of the Iranian nation. Accordingly, at the highest level, it has been decided that Iran will engage in negotiations in Islamabad with the American side for a period of two weeks, based solely on these principles. It is emphasised that this does not mean the end of the war; Iran will only accept the termination of the war once the details—given the acceptance of Iran’s preferred principles in the 10-point plan—are finalised in the negotiations.

These negotiations will begin in Islamabad on Friday, April 10 (21 Farvardin), with complete distrust of the American side, and Iran will allocate two weeks for these talks. This timeframe is extendable by mutual agreement. It is essential that during this period, complete national unity be maintained and victory celebrations continue with strength.

...

If the enemy’s surrender on the battlefield is transformed into a decisive political achievement in the negotiations, we will celebrate this massive historical victory together; otherwise, we will fight side-by-side on the battlefield until all the demands of the Iranian nation are met. Our hands are on the trigger, and the moment the slightest error is committed by the enemy, it will be responded to with full power."

There's quite a lot more to it than that, but I've selected here the parts that make it clear that Iran is proposing 14 days of negotiations (potentially more, if the US and Iran agree they want more time) with the US in Islamabad, Pakistan.

They at no point mention Israel being present at or party to the negotiations in Islamabad.

They also quite plainly say that they will continue to fight, if this falls through.

So... nobody has actually agreed to any of Iran's 10 points or the US's 15 points yet.

They've agreed that those sets of points represent acceptable starting conditions for an actual negotiation to begin... and that there should be a ceasefire in effect for the duration of these negotiations, between the US and Iran.

Again they know the US isn't capable of reigning in Israel... they're not stupid, they know Israel will still be attacking them while these negotiations are occuring.

Now, if Iran believes the US has resumed attacking Iran, yeah that could blow this up, but if the US just sits tight, without Trump going insane again, or having another stroke, well, maybe something can be accomplished.

Which puts Trump in a great position because he's apparently getting phonecalls on the daily from the Saudis pressuring him to sort out the Hormuz and the "Iran keeps blowing up oil infrastructure" situation. And since the Saudi's have got a lot of leverage on his family business it's no wonder he's been publicly crashing out. There's even a rumor (so take it with a grain of salt) that some of the Middle Eastern sovereign-wealth funds backing the WB+Paramount deal are considering pulling out; and Trump wants as much media as he can to fall into the hands of his oligarch buddies.

So, appease Israel for political gain with paleoconservatives? Or appease your wealthy business partners? 🤔

[–] CannonFodder@lemmy.world 5 points 50 minutes ago

He has to appease Israel as they clearly have the dirt on him. He has to appease the Saudi's or they'll destroy him financially. Haha. Hope he strokes out.

The strait of Hormuz is a McDonald's ice cream machine.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 15 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

One day I had worked for 18 hours straight. I was going home at 1AM and walked past a McDonald's. It was in the middle of summer, 35 degrees all day, but cooling off at night. I really needed a pick me up, so I walked in and approached the counter. A pretty lady looked at me and said: "I know exactly how you feel and what you are here for". In my mind she transformed into an angel and felt the holy energy radiating out. Then she followed up with: "I'm SO sorry, our ice-cream machine broke". I didn't even say anything, I just stared at her, a tear pushing it's way out of the corner of my eye. I mumbled something like "It's fine, don't worry about it", turned around and walked out. I'm not even sure how I got home that day, I was just mentally destroyed. This was 20 years ago and I still remember that moment :'(

[–] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Continuing your example, maybe someone can build a website for it like the McDonald’s one?
