The entire Israeli political spectrum is united in blasting Netanyahu for not continuing to attack Iran, and Israeli society agrees. The reason, to put it simply, is that Israelis are war junkies.

Misinformation. There's literally Israeli Kinesset members that oppose the genocide in Gaza and the war with Iran. They are the minority, but they do exist.

Not to mention the Israeli citizens refusing to enlist in the military, who are sent to prison.

[–] RymrgandsDaughter@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago

The fact that it's a minority means that the article is barely exaggerating. If they slapped the word majority or major majority infront of their statements and it made it accurate then you can't even call them a liar.

How many?

The poll they cite only polled 500 people and the "Israel Democracy Institute" who conducted the poll was founded by a Trump mega donor.

Mondoweiss loses credibility by releasing this article without pointing out the obvious polling issue.

They also failed to shout out the organizations that have been protesting daily against the war! Standing Together עומדים ביחד has been organizing protests since day one of the operation.

Mondoweiss is showing itself as an unfair propagandist publication who is more interested in clicks and spicy headlines than actually giving a real picture.

The poll they cite only polled 500 people

Which is more than enough. Statistically, you only need 30 or so samples to get a normal distribution, at which case the error varies with 1/sqrt(n) for sample size n. This means that if a sample size of 8000 would only have 4 times less error (so from 4% to 2%) compared to one of 500. The mathematics of the thing is ironclad: Provided the sample is representative (i.e. doesn't unfairly over or underrepresent a particular group) and exceeds the mid-double digits*, any issues with sample size would manifest as a large calculated error.

Founded and funded by people and orgs that have a vested interest in this conflict. Like the heritage foundation polling for gay marriage.

That is heart-breaking. How can people develop such hate and violence in their hearts?

Atleast seculars seem to have better opinions according to your graph

[–] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 100 points 3 days ago (4 children)

A whole nation of genocidal maniacs. Just as racist and murderous as the Nazis.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 101 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There are a handful of decent humans there who oppose it all. They have protested and been beaten up.

Mostly young people. Not very many of them. But I think that's pretty courageous considering they are literally surrounded by wolves.

What must it be like to live in a country surrounded by insane fascist. ?

Oh... Nevermind I guess I know.

Well.

But at least most of my fellow U.S citizens aren't in support of it.

I think Israel must feel like literally everyone is maga except like 2 people you know.

It's a good time to recommend the Discworld book Jingo, which remains just as relevant as when it was written.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. *No one* ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

And another quote from Feet of Clay:

Just because someone's a member of an ethnic minority doesn't mean they're not a nasty small-minded little jerk

(And then there's The Fifth Elephant that's so painfully spot-on that I'd rather not spoil a single moment of it. Terry Pratchett was amazing and I wish he was still around to share his humor and wisdom. We could use a few laughs right now.)

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 7 points 3 days ago

Seems like a lifetime since he died, I hope his books are still popular in a hundred years. Gnu pterry.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 39 points 3 days ago

Even the Nazis weren't "a whole nation of genocidal maniacs." In both Israel and Nazi Germany there is/was opposition to the atrocities committed by their leadership, just not enough. In Israel in particular "do you support comically evil thing" polls tend to get 60-80% support, except the Iran war which at its outset had 93% support. That's not a whole nation of genocidal maniacs; that's a nation of mostly genocidal maniacs.

Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that these same people were praising their soldiers for raping captured civilians?

[–] sns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 3 days ago (10 children)

Inhuman savages.

Then they'll claim people hate them "because we're Jews".

[–] UltraBlack@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I was once quite a fierce supporter of israel. Maybe because I was trying too hard to not be antisemitic.

But this shit man... It's getting ridiculous.

They've lost all my sympathy

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago

It's the same with minorities who are racist.

There are assholes in every society.

Just because they are marginalized by someone else doesn't make them any less of an asshole.

It makes them conservatives.

The picture in the original article does indeed mention that:

This got to be the level of head shaking that can break a neck and dislocate shoulders.

[–] Foni@piefed.zip 19 points 3 days ago (7 children)

I understand the hate in the comments, but I think the important part is something else, How can the world deal with a country that only wants to commit genocide with all its neighbors? and not the government, the population in general. What can we do with this? How do we get out of the cycle of violence with people like this?

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 14 points 3 days ago

It's pretty easy actually.

Israel's economy is dependent on US funding. If the US stopped sending them money, they couldn't commit genocide and also the economy would crash..leading to mass migration out of the country.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 13 points 3 days ago

Not supporting and helping their fascists government and leaders would be a good start and would solve most of the problems.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 7 points 3 days ago

Echoing basically all other replies: Israel doesn't actually have the juice to get their lebensraum alone; they need all sorts of American and European support for it. Cutting off their support would immediately destroy their position as regional near-hegemon and force them to compromise.

To be "fair" to hard-line settler types, the mood of the world is swinging so strongly against them and their regime, this might be the very last time they have a chance to get what they want.

Hopefully, they'll never find a world again that is as complacent as it is now.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Israelis are deeply supremacist and dont care what the world thinks, except insomuch as it affects their access to resources and influence. This is reflected in the targetting of their missiles in their "samson" doctrine. They targetted capitals across the world, including Europe.

The settlements are built by the state of israel and armed and protected by the idf. Netenyahu approve those settlements yet countries still sells weapons to them and has no economical sanctions on the state itself. Hypocrites been fake condemning settlers for decades with no action to back their claim. Iaraelis voted for Netenyahu for 6 goddamn time
