If he wins it's 100% rigged.

[–] Humanius@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

We already know that it is rigged. Fidesz has worked hard rigging the Hungarian electoral system in recent years.
Question is mostly whether they rigged the system hard enough that they can still win.

They cheated and still lost badly.

I hate that the word "could" should have any place in this!!
Was there not a poll the other day that had the opposition leading by 20 points?
There should be absolutely no doubt that Orban loses this.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In Orban's last election he got less than 50 percent of the votes but 90 percent of the districts. If the same number of people vote as last time even a 20 point lead may still fall flat. Only a massive boost in turnout and disgust will see it through. And then we get to the real issue. His opponent in American terms is rather bidenesque. Not in terms of senility, but having a lot of the same uninspiring or awful positions. Having been a member of Orban's party Fidesz. This in some ways is like 2020 in the US.

Oh so Hungary isn't really a democracy? That FPP shit shouldn't be allowed in EU.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Democracy is unfortunately never absolute. That would be anarchy and we could never be so lucky. But yes. Less democratic than the United States by a little for all that means. But slightly more than Russia or China perhaps? Either way, its a cluster no one should want to be part of.

AFAIK the best ranked democracies are Scandinavian, so it's not like it's a secret recipe, In Denmark the model has worked since 1953.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Definitely, but the sad truth is that it may as well be secret. Because our mass media failures either just don't talk about it. Or claim it wouldn't work here for racist reasons.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Yes we had a party leader of Danish Peoples Party some years back claiming immigrants shouldn't be allowed to vote, because a survey showed they mostly voted for pro immigration parties.

That's how fucked up stupid people can be!! BTW at their peak they achieved almost a fourth the vote here in Denmark, but then they got political influence, and next election they were halved.
The best way in a functioning democracy to get rid of stupid parties is to expose what they really want when they get a bit of influence. Previous election they almost dropped out of congress, but unfortunately they gained some this election.
Unfortunately there is always a good share of racists in almost all countries. But in a functioning democracy they are unlikely to gain enough votes to become the majority party in a government.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey_Defeats_Truman

(I'm not even slightly trying to equate Orban with Truman, to be clear, but just pointing out that it's not over until the actual votes are counted.)

[–] ProfThadBach@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There were polls saying Trump would loose but here we are.

That's because they stole the election, already admitted it.

Wait.

No.

You mean sending out ~~the big guns~~ JD Vance didn't tip it in Donald's or Orban's favor?

Relevant today, in the lead up and the next days' analysis: Here's a podcast on "how to steal an election" by Encyclopedia Geopolitica where they explain the stages of "legally" stealing an election and how to defend against it. https://zencastr.com/z/RlvshSaS
