Virtually every QB in the NFL is deviating from their career norms this season. Studs like Allen, Mahomes, Burrow (playing better recently) Lawrence, Hurts, Watson, etc all seem to be turning the ball over more. What do you think is causing this? Just more Defensive adjustments?

Fidget spinner era aged kids have entered the nfl

[–] Similar_Meeting9722@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Defenses around the league have adjusted schemes to shut down the pass heavy offenses of the league

[–] jakej619@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you ask the Fields Truther’s it’s coaching

[–] ImEvadingPermaban@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It is all CM Punk's fault. He has been a troublemaker wherever he goes. Once the NFL fires him everything will be great.

I am just gonna latch on this thread to talk about MNF. If Josh Allen was the Bears QB, would this fanbase consider him a franchise QB?

[–] LegendaryWarriorPoet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

First pick was a drop, not at all his fault, second pick along the sideline Fields would never hear the end of lol. But Allen has built up more credibility so the perspective understandably reflects that

[–] MiddleNameIsJoe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The fact that you're asking makes it seem like you think the answer isn't obvious an I'm really intrigued as to why.

[–] exospheer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

he obviously is a franchise QB but he is very mistake prone. its Favre like. Based off some comments on this board, some people expect almost perfect QB play from a franchise QB. I feel like there would be a vocal minority that would not like Allen in this fanbase. its a roller coaster ride.

[–] MiddleNameIsJoe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We've never had a QB come anywhere close to Allen's level of performance, so I guess we'll see how popular that is if we ever get there.

[–] Significant_Cycle_76@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Absolutely lol

[–] wizard_1905@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Josh Allen would be the starting QB on 30 of 31 other teams.

[–] sleeptilnoonenergy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

He would not start in KC, Philly, Miami, Cinci, at the least. Probably also not Houston or Dallas or SF. He's neck and neck with guys like Goff and Herbert. Allen's a turnover machine and habitual bad decision maker. In this QB space he's a little better than Cutty and a little worse than Favre.

Now he of course is still a great talent, but he's become extremely overrated. He's most certainly not the second best QB in the league.

[–] TrynnaFindaBalance@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Are you unironically claiming that Purdy would start over Josh Allen?

[–] PlayonWurds@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He's a flopping bitch. That shit is inexcusable.

[–] bigomlet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Josh Allen has won more playoff games in his career than the bears have won since 1995. He’d be a god in Chicago

The pendulum is swinging. Defenses will always find a way to eventually stop the offense du jour. it taken a few years, but it appears it’s happening this season

[–] RollofDuctTape@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Allen is doing what he always does, no? Lots of TD and INT. Burrow was coming off injury. Mahomes has Nagy. Lawrence has always been overrated. Hurts wasn’t a big thrower even last season. Watson has…a lot on his mind.

[–] RemotePhilosophy6@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I agree I believe fields is better than Lawrence the number show it. Lawrence is has a proven coach that why he wins moss games but definitely overrated.

[–] LegendaryWarriorPoet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Its been much worse for Allen, he had 14 picks in 17 games last year, already 11 in 10 this year

Development leagues prioritized D line over O line for their most talented big men for a while now.

I believe Clean pocket time is down a decent amount, couple other indices as well.

I think it's going to need rule changes, or rule enforcement changes to reverse the trend.

Time will tell.

[–] BoredGuy2007@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Fuck that defenses need to eat too

[–] FaithfulBarnabas@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes. We actually need to go the other way. In terms of rules it is terribly unfair to the defense

[–] Bacchus1976@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

An all-time low of WR talent across the league.

[–] sleepysol@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

lack of 2 a days. All of the big name QBs of the last generation were able to get 2 a days in during a longer preseason. Now that all save Rodgers are retired we're seeing the true affect of the lack of extra practice by the QBs. This poorer level of play will continue until either the NFL gives up the extra game for more preseason or allows 2 a days back.

[–] MonsignorHalas@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Banned by the NCAA too. The product of reducing contact injuries. I wonder if they can still have no contact practice and then contact practice.

The leagues all run on ratings. As long as people watch the league will adjust.

[–] tendy_trux35@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The front 7 of most defenses have just become such athletic freaks that it’s hard for the OL to keep up.

You have DL and edge rushers that are as fast as secondary defenders. It’s so hard for the traditional OL guys to keep up and TEs are getting rag dolled.

The pendulum swinging back will be RBs that are LB sized for pass protection and TEs that are the size of Darnell Washington that essentially gives you an extra LT or RT on the line

[–] PUfelix85@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Unreported injuries.

[–] Arrentoo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
  • Defenses are smarter, better, and faster.
  • Lack of good QBs. A lot/most of the mid-to-late 2010s QBs haven't turned out well. There was arguably a golden age in the early 2000s of QBs and we're actively feeling "return to normal" part.
  • Similar/tangential to the above, lack of good OCs/offensive minds and/or people to execute it.
  • There's an arms race in the trenches. There are not a ton of humans that have the frame that supports being a lineman, let alone everything else. The better athletes gravitate towards the flashy/paid roles aka D-Lineman. This leaves the "scraps" to be O-Lineman.

Beyond the above that I feel are pretty easy to verify by a cursory look at year-in-year-out stats, I do think there isn't a great evaluation of collegiate talent nowadays also and hasn't been for a decade or so. I mostly think it's a function of social media or 24hr news cycle or whatever you want to call it to where if a scout, director, GM, or owner wants to fall in love with a decent prospect that also represents a need, it's extremely easy with the amount of highlight reels that're available for any number of people. Tying it back to the Bears, Justin Fields had cameras following him since he was in high school.

[–] recstar24@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The top quarterbacks are garnering huge contracts and teams are paying for it with less depth at WR and OL. Virtually all of the QBs you mentioned in original post are recent contract extensions.

[–] Chemical_Astronaut_9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I think this is a huge factor as well.

[–] Bergamot29@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Damn. Good theory. That might be it.

[–] LegendaryWarriorPoet@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Fields meanwhile has been arrow up tho some on this sub wont acknowledge it 💁🏼‍♂️

[–] sleeptilnoonenergy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He's had a couple good games heavily inflating his stats, but has looked like a backup or bottom tier starter most of the year.

tho some on this sub wont acknowledge it 💁🏼‍♂️

[–] jphoc@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Been a great QB in last 17 games. Over 100 rating and 35 TDs

Defenses are limiting big plays now with two high safety concepts now. It's forcing teams to methodically move down the field and rely on explosive plays from receivers in the open field. Here are some solid reads for more info.

Offensive line play stinks and defensive line play is in the golden era

Save for Cam Newton. Russell Wilson, and the short peak of Luck there was kind of a decade of shit QB drafts.

Meanwhile, defenses have evolved. Before you know it, we’ll be back to bruising backs pounding through small quick defenses. Ebb and flow of the meta.

[–] TheACrispy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Its wild when Fields played a much better game against a team like the Broncos then guys like Josh Allen or Pat Mahomes did this year. This season has been a wild one for sure, just when u think theres a top team, they get their ass handed to em. Cheers to the final stretch my friends

[–] obi-1-jacoby@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They all got paid lmao

[–] Evening_Direction585@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Defenses adjusting.

[–] moneyman2222@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In addition to what others have said, there's also been a lot of injuries. Burrow was dealing with injuries. Kelce was hurt and also no T Swift in some games. Bad for Mahomes. Allen is just a modern day Big Ben and always has been. Watson hasn't been good since pre allegations. The healthier guys/teams like Tua, Lamar, Russ, Dak, Goff are all about the same as their averages or better. Kirk was balling pre injury. Young bucks like Stroud and Howell have shined

[–] cardiaccat1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bears fans are branching out and watching other teams due to how depressing ours is. Since god hates us and we aren’t allowed to watch good QBs we’re fucking the rest of the league.

Since no one cares about Houston Stroud has been going off though. Except the one game they played Carolina and I’m sure some bears fans watched for the pick and they lost further proving our curse.

[–] clarkent281@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They're all lost without the GOAT Tom Brady on an active roster

[–] glockymcglockface@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I love how these are all wrong. Pretty sure injuries is the number one answer.

I’m sure cousins and Rodgers are going to have one of their worst years ever this year.

[–] Joliet_Jake_Blues@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ball isn't juiced like previous years

[–] Dilligaf_1963@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I blame soft balls.

[–] LegalComplaint@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Getsy has coordinated every offense.

[–] hammerSmashedNail@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Member when we all laughed at Denver for having Russell Wilson because we have JF1? Haha at least we’re not the broncos. Jajaja the good old days

[–] Puzzleheaded-Ear9487@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Is still say that, you got a huge contract wrapped up in a fine QB. We have a ton of flexibility. Glad we’re not the Broncos or the Giants
