I like Star Trek because it's optimistic. I want to see competent, emotionally mature, people solving problems by working together.
If I want to see bad apples I can look outside.

Not just optimistic competence porn (which I like), but IMO hopeful. The original iterations actually inspired hope for a better future, something sorely lacking today and precious.
Reading 'Tease "Dark"' in the headline is an immediate turn off.

Sisko was never glorifying being dark. In the pale moonlight is a fantastic episode, but I don't remember it glorifying the darkness.
I don't know if it's glorifying anything, but the man bombs planets on star trek as a part of the federation.

A Federation officer can make a planet uninhabitable as a treat.
The good news is, the word "glorify" does not appear in this article.
This is sad. The reason I'm going back and watching classic Trek is because I'm tired of every show needing to be dark and gritty!
Wasn't the big complaint against Star Trek: Section 31 was that people didn't want to watch Corrupt Space CIA? And don't people enjoy SNW and Lower Decks because they embrace the lighter side of Trek?
Honestly I think most Trek movies have tried to get dark and it never lands for me.

I think the much bigger complaints are that it was boring, derivative, and had nothing to say?
American culture never recovered from the grimdark post-9/11 era of the 2000s. They had to tell themselves everyone has a dark side, even the purest heroes, in order to justify systemic killing and torture in the name of The War on Terror(TM).
They really are determined to undermine Star Trek.

I will always reserve judgment until seeing it (taking the hypothetical stance that this actually gets made), but it's not an exciting description of a Star Trek project (to me).
Yeah, I mean it's barely a description at all - we're surviving on scraps over here.

Hmm, I like both of those movies but way different vibes. Crimson Tide might as well already be a Trek script, but Training Day? Freshly minted Captain versus effective but corrupt badmiral perhaps? XO and captain maybe?
My hopes this will be made are pretty low, but there could be some good Trek here. Especially if they actually made a movie that wasn't a cameo fest (it does say all new characters).
I haven't actually seen "Training Day," but I suppose both films have entrenched authority figures with outdated and/or corrupt ideas of How Things Are Done, and younger subordinates who have to walk through the ethical minefield that's been laid.
And I agree, that could be good Trek.
Something rotten at the core of Starfleet? Surely not...! 🤣
It's an old chestnut, and well overdone by now, but the real question is whether they can give it a new spin, or simply make it work better than, say, in "Into darkness".
At least they're not pulling known characters out of mothballs for this, so I remain optimistic.
If they wanted to go all in on making Starfleet the bad guy, I'd be all for it. Showing that the Federation's ideals can overcome and dismantle even the Federation's largest and most ingrained institutions when they go sour would be about the most hopeful thing the franchise could do right now.
But this just sounds like another badmiral situation, nothing ground breaking.
