If we built around fields I could see us becoming a playoff team and maybe even a divisional round winner. But there's no way we could win a superbowl in this modern era of the NFL, even with an 85 level defense
Chicago Bears
First off, Eberflus needs to be fired, with that said: if the Bears decide to move on from Fields, I'm okay with that, even though I'm a Fields fan. But don't draft a QB just because you want to move on from Fields. Draft a QB because you think he's the "guy." The only problem is, Williams & Maye aren't considered can't miss prospects. If they were, I'd say go ahead, draft them.
If the team isn't sold on the 2024 QBs, they'd be better off drafting MHJ and an OL or pass rusher, build the team around Fields for next season & if Fields doesn't show that he's the future, then draft a QB in 2025. The team would be in a better position for a rookie QB then and its not like there won't be any top QB prospects available if we wait.
But don't draft a QB just because you want to move on from Fields. Draft a QB because you think he's the "guy."
if Fields doesn't show that he's the future, then draft a QB in 2025.
What if none of the QB prospects in 2025 look like "the guy"?
The Bears actually have two choices to make this offseason:
- Exercise Fields' 5th year option, or don't.
- Draft a new QB with Carolina's pick, or don't.
If the answer to both questions above is "don't", then they go into 2024 with a lame-duck Fields with no contract who can leave via FA after 2024. (The Bears could tag him for 2025, but that would cost an obscene amount of money against the 2025 cap.)
The reason this was Justin's "prove it" year, is that there were no difficult decisions to make last offseason. That's not the case in this upcoming spring.
In 35 games, Justin Fields has 27 INTs and 35 fumbles. In the past two seasons, he's finished 30th and 32nd in passing yards per game.
Right now we have the 1st overall pick and there are 2 elite prospects at the QB position.
There is a 0% chance the Bears decide to build around Justin Fields, who's been a bottom 5 passer since entering the league.
It literally makes no sense and at this point the organization is just paying lip service to the idea of brining Fields back. It's not going to happen.
You don't pass on an elite QB prospect 2 years in a row to build around fucking Justin Fields.
Are they really elite prospects, or are the just the two best available this year?
caleb isn't generational, but he's the best prospect since joe burrow. you can't pass on that, especially when the number 1 pick was basically gifted to you through a trade made by a franchise even worse than we are.
THIS !!!!!!
Can you point me to his fumble stats. I had a hard time finding those, but I could also be internet illiterate for all I know.
Who was he throwing to for the first 2 years?
What's the o-line rank during that time?
Last 3 years Josh Allen has 42 INTs and 25 fumbles
Are you sure we don't need a few more quarters..It's only been 3 seasons? Are you sure we cant find more excuses for H1M?
who's been a bottom 5 passer since entering the league.
This is not a thing, at least not this year.
And possibly have to pay $25-30mil a year to the guy you still have questions about. You are also resetting the clock on the contract for another 4 years.
People seem to get hyped based on whatever they saw last game between these two. These conversations should include one huge aspect that the Bears will have at the top of their considerations which is $$$...
Lets say you stick with Fields. Clearly they will decline his 5th year and at best get him to play next year for a $6M cap hit. Then either you have to offer him a lot more or you're back into the situation of "what's the answer at QB?"
If you take Caleb you completely reset the clock and if he works out the possible 5th year option. Looking at Bryce Young's contract for the #1 overall his cap hits are $6.9m this year then $8.6m, $10.3m, and finally $12m.
If Bears are #1 overall the long term cap benefits are absolutely going to come into play.
I'm not the biggest believer of JF1 but I still root for his success even though there's more historical data telling me otherwise. However, I believe strategically it's best to stay with him another year so that: 1. We get a generational WR that everyone agrees on (Caleb is definitely not a consensus generational QB) 2. We can also get a very good OT to build the line of our future 3. We will be definitely ready to support a young rookie QB if Fields can't step up.
Passing on Caleb or Drake this year will immediately set up the team sucking for two years to be in the Archie Manning Lottery. The dudes in here who have an addiction to rebuild talk probably love that idea but damn that’s just another 2 years of 4-7(at best)win seasons. Just for when the time comes around to say Manning is a flawed prospect and we should stick with whatever medicore mid round qb that replaces Fields by week 10 next year.
As I see it, this is the predicament; Poles has to go all in one way or the other for next year, but Fields is roughly a 50/50 option to go forward with. If he wants to keep Fields or Eberflus, they should keep them all. If he wants to move on from one, he should move on from all of them (i’m lumping Getsy in package with Flus). I don’t believe there is value in building around Fields at this point if you are going to reset the coaching staff again. And if they want to stick with Eberflus, they shouldn’t invest in a rookie QB and repeat 2021.
Complicating the matter is this golden opportunity of two high picks, so you don’t want to miss out ona chance at a golden ticket…and of course as Bears fans the draft a qb option has to be loaded with the mindf*ck option of “guy with similar traits to fields’ vs ‘guy from nc like trubisky’
What I do know is, don’t listen to bleacher report 😂
This is what I want. Say what you want but adding MHJ with DJ Moore will be career changing for Fields.
He’s made progress. He’s the same age as Bo Nix and Penix. He’s not perfect but there’s been progress especially the past 4-5 games.
Monday wasn’t pretty but the game plan was odd and he still had a super clutch game winning drive that I’m not sure he has a year ago. We’ll see how the season plays out but I’m on the keep Fields and draft MHJ train.
I guess if you love Caleb or Drake you go with them but I’m personally not in love with Caleb (who possesses some similar issues that fields had in college) or Drake, NC QB. I probably prefer Drake to Caleb though.
Either way I feel like everyone should be rooting to keep playing good football so we can get MHJ.
Right now, do you want to exercise Fields' 5th year option and/or sign him to an extension?
Yeah maybe with MHJ he can finally throw for 200 yards in 3 consecutive games for the first time in his career
Doesn't really matter who the wide receivers are if our quarterback takes his eyes off down field after 2 seconds
Just based on observing. Fans and pundits are always overvaluing QBs compared to NFL teams. People would have had the Lions draft Malik Willis in the top 5 because they didn't think you could build a contender around Jared Goff...
because they didn't think you could build a contender around Jared Goff...
Jared Goff was a former 1-1 pick who has already taken a team to the Super Bowl.
People would have had the Lions draft Malik Willis in the top 5
Who said this?
Caleb Williams
What has he shown for people to think the Bears will be any better once they have to pay him (significantly) more?
I dont think Fields is a terrible QB, but he also hasnt shown much for me to believe paying him will be worth it. Yes, the coaching staff is a major issue as well, but I think banking on Fields being the guy is a mistake.
If our new head coach likes Fields more than any of our options this offseason, then fine, but outside of that we should be looking for a new QB imo.
I wish Justin was the answer. He flashes elite ability and his YouTube highlight reel is spectacular… But he gives the ball away too much and he has never played in an offense that has truly been designed for him. He needs a new start and the Bears need to reset the clock.
It’s just another example of Bears management not getting it right.
Why is everybody so focused on Williams when he has a horrible attitude and hasn't looked that impressive these last few weeks. Drake Maye is a more preferable choice to go with!
I am convinced Bears fans have no idea what franchise QB looks like. Justin Fields has had about 4 good games in 3 years. He put up 12 points on primetime tv. He is statistically one of the worst 3 QBs over the last couple years with Zach Wilson and Mac Jones. He crumbles in every 4th quarter. We lost every game for an entire calendar year. An undrafted rookie came in and played better than him. Do you guys get pleasure from the pain of watching awful football? Is it a Bears fan kink?
Written by a Packers or Vikings fan for sure, lmao. Only an asshole who wants to lose their job would build around Bumblin’-Fumblin’-Bustin.
Fields is terrible. Stop with this nonsense.
What if JF1 doesn’t want to stay with Chicago? I mean I wouldn’t blame him… If next year we end up being better but not good enough then what.. Sure we can sign that 5th year option but we can go back in time and pick up a different QB in this years draft
I like JF1/Bagent plus trading the #1 overall. We just need an OC who can get creative with JF1
Six more months of this .... What's the over under on "Fields is the guy!/Fields isn't the guy!" posts per day between now and the daft? At least 3.5, right?
Whatever they do, Getsy needs to be replaced. With him as OC, neither Fields nor a drafted rookie will have any success on the Bears.
Why can't we draft a qb and still keep fields for 2 to 3 years?
NO THEY AREN'T STOP TRYING TO MAKE THE BEARS SUCK, IF WE GET THE #1 PICK WE ARE GETTING WILLIAMS I SWEAR SOME PEOPLE WRITE STUFF JUST TO SEE US FAIL.
My god, please stop.
