January 26 marks the colonisation of Australia and the grief, heartache and pain that this has inflicted on First Nations people for generations. It is also a moment to recognise the ongoing survival of the oldest existing culture in the world today.

On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Warrane, marking the beginning of British colonial rule on Gadigal land. This date, originally commemorated as Foundation Day, has evolved into Australia Day. However, this day also represents the start of the invasion, suffering, and dispossession for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The true history of these lands spans over 60,000 years, far preceding colonial times.

When British settlers began colonizing Australia in 1788, between 750,000 and 1.25 Aboriginal Australians are estimated to have lived there. Soon, epidemics ravaged the island’s indigenous people, and British settlers seized Aboriginal lands.

Though some Aboriginal Australians did resist—up to 20,000 indigenous people died in violent conflict on the colony’s frontiers—most were subjugated by massacres and the impoverishment of their communities as British settlers seized their lands.

Between 1910 and 1970, government policies of assimilation led to between 10 and 33 percent of Aboriginal Australian children being forcibly removed from their homes. These “Stolen Generations” were put in adoptive families and institutions and forbidden from speaking their native languages. Their names were often changed.

For many Aboriginal and Torres Trait Islanders, January 26 is a day of mourning, symbolising the loss of their ancestors, their land, and their rights. It recalls the devastating impact of the Frontier Wars, the ongoing trauma, and the systemic injustices that continue to this day, including disproportionate rates of Black deaths in custody, health inequities, and the desecration of sacred sites. Celebrating on this day overlooks these painful realities and the resilience of First Nations peoples in the face of ongoing colonisation.

I swear all evolutionary biology winds up giving you chicken-and-egg conundrums

Are the bees able to recognize faces because of their ability to discern flowers from one another, or is their ability to recognize faces why they can tell the flowers apart?

Did humans develop their robust cooling systems to support big brains, or for endurance? (Both at once? Too advanced)

Do social animals get big brains because of social living, or do animals getting big brains make them more social over time?

Don't you dare give me some wishy washy "let's find out" or "perhaps it's more nuanced." My big human brain wants BIG ANSWERS

Looks like Target is gonna be installing AI cameras on all of the self checkouts. Installs should take most of the year to permeate every store in the country, so if you're in a rural area you might not see them for a while. They view you from directly above, so step up your shrinkage game accordingly.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

They had to "close down stores for shoplifting" but can afford updating every self checkout kiosk with cameras

Update regarding my earlier post about suspected group-chat wrecker: He started with some bullshit again yesterday and I kinda snapped and told him to stop it with this senseless garbage, muted the chat to calm down, and when I unmuted it today he had left. Yay?

I'm kind of a little worried + overthinking about this though. hope it doesn't have too much social blowback, since we have a decent amount of mutual friends and acquaintances. and he's a lot of fun and really not a bad dude, just extremely politically reddit-brained and woefully uncritical. I mean, plenty of people are, but they at least usually have the good sense and decency to shut the fuck up. Sure, he wants an end to all the violence and for the working masses to achieve liberation, but all his takes and opinions are extremely eurocentric and always just so happen to align with the US state department. I tried my best to find some kind of ideological framework in there but nope, seems like it's just us-foreign-policy all the way down. I have enough infantile bullshit to deal with already, so that's not really the kind of person I can keep around.

Eh, whatever. If you dip into a nice little tankie echo chamber, you should expect your shitty takes to be dunked upon stalin-shining

playing more workers & resources: soviet republic has made me realize one achievable goal of socialism (at least the soviet variety).

workers deserve to basically live in what amounts to a resort. leisure, healthcare, sports and free food all within walking distance in your micro district. busses to the beach in the summer.

the more dangerous job the more luxurious the resort.

Oh wow you're telling me that the UNRWA did October 7 and the evidence didn't come to light until momths later when the agency becomes the last resort for getting food and medicine in? Seems legit no need to question it.

I have a couple announcements:

  • After the college fiasco, I already have a 'useless' degree so I'm going to ask some professors if I am better off just going to grad school? If that happens, I'll be 'all caught up' in one fell swoop.

  • I will say this until I fully accept it, but I am flag-bi-pride. I would probably be even more interested in men if I wasn't held down by shame. Sue me, twinks and himbos are hot.

The further in time i get away from my breakup from my ex, the more i see the red flags.

People really do hide their controlling nature until years in sometimes 😔Another reason victim blaming is shit. Like sorry i didn't realize someone was hiding their worst from me until years later agony-consuming And when the person you trust most is acting like what they did is no big deal, it's easy to gaslight yourself into accepting it.

CW mild references to non-physical abuse

spoilerShe literally said in text that she was taking money from me because i "deserved it" like what the fuck????????????? But somehow it's taken a long time for my brain to stop making excuses for her and accept that was actually abuse. As was the other controlling things she did. Like the times she threw 8 hour tantrums if i so much as had a grumpy expression on my face, even if it was grumpiness from work... me being slightly upset at all triggered her RSD and then it became about calming her down for the next solid 4-8 hours after. it just became easier to hide how i felt than express any negative emotion at all. And then when i couldn't control it, and show the very slightest negative emotion like sighing then she accused me of overreacting and getting too angry at her :| When she got upset with me for putting my elderly cat over her family, i defaulted to shutting down to try to get my feelings under control as to not show a single iota of emotion, as usual. But then she did something different, she started goading me and said "Oh i guess this conversation is over and i should go." i lost my temper, sighed dramatically and asked "what do you want from me, go back in time?" and the she literally said "i need to be able to give you feedback without you getting upset at me" and acted really hurt, like i had literally like called her a slur or been really hurtful on purpose. When i had been unable to give her any sort of negative feedback for our entire relationship. The projection was off the charts.

When i got into my next relationship and my partner reacted normally to me being slightly upset with them, instead of berating me for my feelings and saying i was controlling them i was like ???? wait what??? it's okay for me to share that i'm unhappy? You.. actually want me to feel better and aren't just going to make this about yourself? What the fuck

What if the Dark Forest is real, but its an artificial construct made to keep species who are entrapped by reactionary thought experiments, like the Dark Forest or the Prisoner's Dilemma, away from a peaceful interstellar community.

So my USB mouse is on the blink and my attempts to fix it haven't worked and I decided it's time to get a new one.

I just wanted some cheap wired mouse I can plug into my computer. I had to scroll through page after page of weird angular things that looked like they were designed to kill Gordon Freeman, all named shit like "STEALTH" or "Power Gaming Recon" before I got a sniff of what I was looking for. The wired mouse section of a bunch of websites I looked on just listed off wireless mouse (and in one website's case, mobile phone SIM cards).

Is it just me or has the internet become a real bugger to find what you want nowadays?

SoylentSnake dont have a panic attack every time you need to take a long car ride with other people (subsequently ruining plans) challenge: impossible

fr though sometimes i really feel like my bad shitty brain is just built to let people down. how do i talk to people abt how something as prosaic & everyday & frequently necessary as being stuck in a cramped car with others is an anxiety trigger and expect them to at all sympathize?

So I'm reading early Parenti (The Anti-Communist Impulse)... There are some serious bangers

quote

But if and when the anti-communist admits there may be positive features in the Soviet system, he then usually reintroduces the "tactical" argument. For instance, Bertram Wolfe dismisses the welfare feature of the Soviet system as an expediency adopted by the totalitarian state in order to maximize its power: a literate, healthy population is, after all, a necessary condition for increased industrialization. Hence, what is considered "welfare" is actually an instrument of "power." One however, might just as easily argue it the other way around. Given the Soviet dream of building the supposedly one true happy, productive, cooperative, and peaceful socialist society, it might be that what is considered "power" is actually an instrument of "welfare." For years, Wolfe and others argued that Soviet leaders pursued power to the constant an deliberate detriment of welfare; now confronted with the fact that the USSR spends proportionately more on health, education, and welfare than do highly industrialized Western nations, they dismiss this as an expediency of power. First the Soviets supposedly used power to neglect welfare; now it seems they use welfare to maintain power.

The communist system is evil either because it shows no concern for the welfare of its citizenry, or because it does show a concern, but only for an imputed evil purpose. There are, then, no set of observable conditions which can put the anti-communist presumption to an empirical test. Indeed, we are not dealing with an empirical proposition. The fact remains that he Soviet government has chosen to give a reasonably high priority to social welfare, and this datum cannot be dismissed if we allow that one way of judging behavior is to observe actual behavior, and one way of judging a system's priorities and policies is to look at its actual priorities and policies.

Ik the main thrust of this is something he restates many times and is well known for, but specifically the line about power being used as an instrument of welfare really resonated with me.

Honestly getting really depressed and hopeless about finding a place to live. And it's dragging up a lot of executive functioning problems that I never really got past but were suppressed by adrenaline...

Is it crazy to want to hire someone for like a couple hundred dollars commission to ~~help me look for a place~~ find a place for me while I'm busy working/dissociating all day? I'm showing myself capable of holding down a job but I'm falling flat on my face when it comes to this.
