There's a reason for that and it's explained in the video: AI still needs input. If you want to create something really new you need new input and artists to provide that input. That's what the guy is telling the whole video.

Do you use the default alarm clock? Is it possible there is some other app providing a wrong "unplug time"?
It made me think of indirect games like Black & White, Dungeon Keeper, The Settlers or The Sims. You can give orders but you cannot directly control your characters / units. If you limit the amount of orders, add a delay / the possibility for an interception or introduce areas where your orders can't reach your hero it could do the trick.
Maybe Van Gogh would be considered a mediocre artist with some rare masterpieces if all of his artwork would have been preserved. Who knows...
