So there's a major portion of the US population that doesn't matter how difficult their own lives are, as long as certain other groups of people have it worse than they do.
And another major portion of the population is willing to sacrifice to make the entire nation's population better off.
And a third major portion of the population doesn't care one way or the other.

Honestly, a lot of this is human nature. Finishing second last means you weren't last, which means you're one step closer to winning, whatever that means.
When you add "certain," I honestly think that group isn't as big as you make it out to be. Most people don't care who is worse off than them, just that they're not dead last by whatever metric they're interested in.

It sounds likes you're strongly implying partisan politics here, but the only way this makes sense is if I take a very slanted view of politics (i.e. a very pro-Democrat), in which case:

The dude in the article was suffering from depression, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some PTSD or something in the mix as well.
Try peaceful means first, but be prepared to fight to get the Dems out of the fed government and military by any means necessary. They all must go and a hard reset must occur for our country to avoid collapse.
I'm guessing he was expecting Trump to lose (ahem, have the election stolen), and when that didn't happen, he made up some other reason to use violence to accomplish what he thought needed to happen. I'm guessing he was also involved in some unhealthy social media circles as well. This screams mental illness, because there's absolutely no reason a rational person would expect Biden to attempt something like Jan 6. He didn't even run for re-election, and Harris conceded the election well before the votes were counted. There are zero reasons a rational person would say any of this.
This isn't a "Republicans bad" thing, this is someone suffering from at least one mental illness, with a history of being involved in violent encounters (green beret). When you mix mental illness and military training, this is exactly what you get, and I'm surprised it wasn't worse.

I guess he figured he'd get more attention for his manifesto if he blew himself up using basically the 2 just talked about symbols. Unfortunately for him, someone else decided to do something similar in New Orleans and killed more people.

New Orleans was ISIS. As much as it sucks we're used to seeing that. This is a straight up puzzle to people unfamiliar with the mental and brain health problems being discovered in soldiers with long service and a high number of deployments with combat.

Probably because conservatism comes from fear and hate, and those are pretty violent emotions. Someone with a lot of empathy, that sees other people as whole humans, is less likely to be right-wing and also less likely to do violence + terrorism.
He was diagnosed with depression, and if you read the article, it reads like someone suffering from more than just depression (perhaps PTSD or something).
The point is he was suffering from mental illness. There's no more logic to it than that.
He was out of it. He didn't even know Harris had replaced Biden. You know those guys screaming about aliens on the sidewalk? Add 15-20 years of special ops experience and Republican propaganda. That's all there is to it. He didn't have any internal consistency, he both wanted veterans to take over DC for a purge of politicians and for everyone to rally around Trump.

I presume this is referring to the "imminent harm" standard for an involuntary psychiatric hold. "Not a risk of imminent harm" does not mean "healthy" or even "not a risk".

Well... given his lame ass attempt at a car bomb they were sorta right.
They also ruled him not a suicide risk, so no.
He also injured a bunch of people who were nearby.
This guy was having serious problems. I have no doubt he said and believed horrid things. The problem though is these guys, (special operations) have been at war for their entire career. They took a "letter of intent" enlistment in 2003, trained for 2 years, and have been deploying for 19 years since then without mental healthcare because that can get them pulled from their job or even the military entirely. And what we've been discovering recently about special operations, indirect fire, and anyone who is regularly in close contact with smaller explosions is downright scary. It acts just like CTE in football players.
The periods of time may change but this is the core problem. These guys can literally experience an alternate reality while knowing something is wrong the entire time. This isn't just a lonely guy who was heavily propagandized, it's a systemic problem. And while most of these guys are dealing with it in the best way possible, we're going to see more of this if we don't step up military and veteran mental healthcare.
