MapQuest out here trying to meme their way back into relevance.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 10 months ago

Some people are dumping Google/Apple maps over it, may as well strike while the iron’s hot.

[–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Their maps are much worse than OSM from what I see. It even has a road near my town where on OSM there's a foot path, that you probably couldn't get up even on a bicycle.

I don't understand how are they still in business, lol.

If OSM is bad you can change it, it’s just a tool that apparantly people haven’t been using close to you

Sorry, my comment is probably poorly written, as I still sometimes struggle with English. OSM is much more accurate in my area than MapQuest. That's what I wanted to say 🙂

I remember printing out MapQuest instructions on paper before trips. The first time I tried it and it just spit out exact directions it seemed almost magical.

I sold my '08 forrester in 2020, and when I was cleaning it out, I found a MapQuest printout from my parents house to my girlfriend's university.

What causes all the vertical lines?

[–] lime@feddit.nu 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

the alphabet is mostly vertical lines

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

True, but given for the given font, most of the "vertical" lines are actually slightly slanted.

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm guessing the font rendering engine is just having a really bad time

[–] Lennnny@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

It's most if not all of the script, so I'd say so.

I liked the 'Gulf of Cardassia' , as I'm sure Trump would think it was about Asian Cars

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Gulf of Mexico

I don’t like change, much less egomaniacally-motivated ones.

Fuck it, gulf of New Zealand

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Gulf of Aoteroa. We can just claim it's the pre colonial name for the country without specifying that the country in questions is not one of the bordering ones.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

TIL ..Mapquest is still a thing. I’m gonna go print out directions to somewhere now…
